HOUSE OF THE DRAGON Showrunner Says BACK TO THE FUTURE Helped Normalize The Prequel's Incest Scenes

House of the Dragon showrunner Ryan Condal has shared his thoughts on fans shipping Rhaenyra and Daemon Targaryen, suggesting Back to the Future helped normalise the concept of incest in entertainment.

Incest has been par for the course in the Game of Thrones franchise since the start, with Cersei and Jaime's love for one another a key part of that entire series. House of the Dragon has since courted controversy with the relationship between Rhaenyra Targaryen (Milly Alcock) and Daemon Targaryen (Matt Smith), though a lot of fans do ship them.

House of the Dragon showrunner Ryan Condal was asked how he feels about that during a recent interview with Variety (via SFFGazette.com), and admitted that he can somewhat understand why there are those who support the inappropriate feelings the uncle and niece share.

"I mean, nothing surprises me these days," Condal confessed. "I really didn't know what people were going to make of that at all. Look, it's part of the story, and I think that's what makes it fascinating, because it sort of is taboo in a way and in our modern sensibility."

"It’s even pretty taboo as far as Game of Thrones goes, maybe not for -  well, I think even so for Targaryens, because it’s different generations."

"I went back to Back to the Future, which is just like, you know," he continues. "Marty goes to the prom with his mom and you’re kind of creeped out about it, but also you’re kind of like, 'Huh! These are two good-looking people. Are they’re going to make out tonight?!' Look, it’s not your uncle. So, you know, I guess people are OK with it, or the original series did enough groundwork to normalize Targaryen mating rituals that we don’t have to worry about it."

"What Daemon does to young Rhaenyra is, in modern terminology, an act of abuse," Condal concluded. "And, as a traumatic event would, it shapes who Rhaenyra becomes."

Back to the Future is certainly an interesting comparison, though we're not sure a combination of that movie's events and the fact Daemon isn't our uncle makes it any more comfortable to watch. Still, as Condal acknowledges, Daemon and Rhaenyra's dynamic is far from healthy, and we expect these stories set in Westeros to take us to dark places.

House of the Dragon's first six episodes have already hit HBO, with the seventh set to hit the cable network on Sunday. The show has already been renewed for a second season, so we expect this twisted relationship between the two family members to continue playing out for some time to come.

It was intended to be weird that Marty takes his mom to prom. No sane person ever said "Huh! These are two good-looking people. Are they’re going to make out tonight?!" about that.

@luckypenny - That's what was funny about it. She was horny for him and onl we and Marty knew it was his Mom. Otherwise they woulda been banging like bunnies on her hope chest.

@ObserverIO - Even Lorraine noticed it once she kissed him and was super weirded out by that.

BTW, can I just say that just like that kiss in Empire Strikes Back, I really think the real problem should be the sexual abuse? Neither Marty nor Luke gave any indication of consent. Why is that okay? Probably wouldn't be if the genders were reversed. Just saying.

I don't think most people watching Back to the Future were having those thoughts, that seems to be a him problem.

I would think he is saying that an audience member who knows that the two very attractive actors aren’t actually mother and son would be wanting them to make out. And its true, we dont want the characters to, because we know about their familial relationship. But deep down we know theyre just two hot actors and we put ourselves in their shoes and want them to hook up, subconsciously. At least I hope thats what he’s saying. Nobody would actually want marty and his mum to hook up. But michael j fox and lea thompson? Sure

@connorblaze - Of course, yes. I mean they're actors. It's like the different between taboo porn and an actual incest sex tape. One is fun, the other is weird and sick and dark.
Fiction and fantasy is fine, but irl? eeechh!

Something about the Incest scenes in HOTD just make me uncomfortable.
Jon and Daenerys both being Adults and initially unknowingly related made it less weird

But Rhaenyra looking like a 14 year old and being the one who was mainly instigating things with Daemon and then stropping off when it didn't happen was just weird.

I think someone misinterpreted the weird incest element in BTTF.

Wow. I didn't know you can watch a movie wrong. But this guy clearly watched Back To The Future wrong.
Lorraine having the hots for her own son being super weird was the whole point. That was the problem they spent the entire movie trying to fix. How is that normalizing anything? Granted, the kiss wasn't super necessary, but even that was to show that even Lorraine noticed that something was off. That's such a weird argument to justify the incest in Game of Thrones.
Just be honest and say that that shit was inspired by ACTUAL monarchies resorting to inbreeding to keep their bloodlines "pure" for centuries. ...And that there seems to be a surprisingly large audience of people with an incest fetish. Weird.
