Hayley Atwell On Why ABC Cancelled AGENT CARTER And Playing A Role-Model For Young Girls

It's a shame that Marvel's Agent Carter didn't go on for longer than its two season run. Fans were enjoying it and it seems that even Marvel itself hoped the show would go on longer. The call ultimately came down to the show's network ABC, and the series' lead Hayley Atwell is pretty sure she knows why they ended it.

During an interview with The AV Club, Atwell said that her next project, the legal drama Conviction, probably seemed more appealing to the network than Agent Carter.

It’s a shame the network canceled it and wanted to put me in something more mainstream.

You know, Marvel didn’t want it to end. There’s lots of online campaigns to bring her back. Fans loved her. I think it was just a network economical thing: 'Let’s put Hayley Atwell in something more mainstream that’s less genre-specific and see if we can get higher ratings.' And unfortunately, that isn’t, as an actor, anything I’ve got control over. But maybe, in small ways, characters like Peggy Carter very slowly pave the way for it to be possible for other female-led narratives to exist.

The AV Club then asked Atwell whether an Agent Carter movie is something she'd still be interested in pursuing. Atwell of course didn't decline, but took the opportunity to praise Marvel and their "winning formula," whilst also mentioning the positive affect the character has had on some young female fans.

Yeah, I mean, I really love the people that I work with in Marvel. I’ve known Louis D’Esposito for eight years now, and Kevin Feige; they’re really good fun, and they’re good guys. And it’s a franchise that works because it has that tongue-in-cheek element to it that I think Joss Whedon also brought in. When I kind of look at anything now, I look at it in terms of the genre and the context and who its audience is. And I feel that Marvel have their winning formula at the moment of creating superhero genre that everyone wants to see.

And Peggy’s such a lovely character. I am kind of playing her with my eyes closed, but that doesn’t mean I wouldn’t play her again, because I like what she puts out into the world. Although, it’s not necessarily high brow, we’re not talking Shakespeare here, I’ve met girls at conventions who say they’re proud of having a strong woman to look up to, who doesn’t have any super powers, who uses her intelligence and her wit to fight the bad guys—and she also likes other women. They’ve really enjoyed that. They’ve projected onto her as a symbol for some positive things. And that’s really lovely, that’s really nice to know that part of the work that you’ve done is in someway, hopefully, in a very, very small way, contributed to someone having a good time for an afternoon.

The series centred around Steve Rogers' popular love interest from Captain America: The First Avenger. Focusing on Agent Peggy Carter's own adventures after her lover's supposed death. It dealt with the founding of SHIELD, Carter's evolving friendship with Iron Man's father, Howard Stark (reprised by Dominic Cooper) and more. Around the time of the show's cancellation, both Peggy Carter (in the present day, as an old woman) and Howard Stark (in a flashback) met their unfortunate demise, in Captain America: Civil War.

In the time since, Atwell has been open about her interest in reprising the role, recently saying that she wouldn't rule out Peggy returning to the MCU in the future. It's plausible that Peggy could make an appearance in the future, be it a flashback or full-on prequel film. Although, unfortunately, there has been no indication (other than some Avengers 4 set pics - which include World War 2 era vehicles) that Atwell has been cast in the upcoming Captain Marvel (which is set in the '90s) or that the return Peggy Carter is anything besides fan hopes and rumors at this point.

What do you think about Atwell's comments? Would you like to see Agent Carter return, both the character and/or the show?

Wouldn't mind seeing her but she'd be too old in the 90s to play any significant role in Captain Marvel

@GreedoSarducci - Hey, she didn’t kick the bucket until she was over 100 years old... she was probably pretty spry in her 80’s!

@Chewtoy - She was 93 in The Winter Soldier, so she'd be like late 70s in the 90s.

According to the MCU wiki, she was born in 1921. That makes her 69 in 1990. Anyway, she will need some ageing-up makeup but she could do some minor stunts at that age I would think. At least she could fire a gun.

@Nebula - I was just going by the fact that the actress was around 30 when she first played the role, set in the early 1940’s, which would put her character birth date around 1910-1914... making her in her 80’s in the mid 1990’s, and over 100 in Civil War.

If there’s an official character bio that says she was younger in Cap: TFA, I wasn’t aware of it.

@TheFamousJMC - Jane Fonda is 80. Unless that's a 10 year old photo.

@Chewtoy - I first went off that in TWS behind the scenes for Peggy's dementia scene they said they were trying to make Hayley look like she was 91. Then I looked it up and the MCU wiki says she died at 95, which would mean she was actually 93 in TWS (unless the annoying timeline comes into it again) so I just did 14 (2014) minus 93 which means she'd have been 79 in 2000.

@GreedoSarducci - The Ant-Man scene she was in was set in 1989, so she would pretty much look like that.

This in a way confirms too how are things between ABC network and Marvel TV, they don't always see face-to-face. You can easily imagine that is how things have gone every year when it comes to renew Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. and it wasn't much up to discussion when Marvel pushed for Most Wanted either.

And might also explain why John Ridley's mysterious Marvel TV project that has been in the works for, like, 4 or 5 years, still hasn't aired.

We could apply this too to the weird canceled-or-not status of the Inhumans. Even though Anson Mount has joined the Star Trek Discovery cast as the character of Pike. So that'd put things difficult for a potential Inhumans S2.

I would like a Peggy Carter period movie.

I don't get the hype for her at all, shes hot sure, but her part was so meh in the movies and the show was even less exciting. but tits I guess..........
GeneralZod
GeneralZod - 4/13/2018, 4:35 PM
@xBandit - She is a good actress, she is sexy AF, but the character she portrayed was a smart, decisive, strong (mentally + physically), witty and principled woman in an era (late 1940s New York and Los Angeles) where the glass ceiling was incredibly low.

Season 1 was fantastic. The writing on season 2 was just bad, and doomed the ratings.

@xBandit - It's funny, folks can talk about T&A all the live long day here (objectifying, right?) yet my comment insinuating some popularity related to social justice gets removed twice. Go figure, I guess?

Anyway, maybe this will stick around, as it doesn't single out any minorites. Unless you're a Marvellite, you quickly realized there wasn't much to the show. The general viewing public, and the network, realized this.

If by chance Agents of Shield is renewed for a 6th season, they have got to have a mini-arc and wrap up Agent Carter season 2's loose plot threads.

Then fans can finally have closure.

@PsychoticSpaceRaccoon - I think that is my biggest upset with the cancellation; that it ended in a cliffhanger.

I dint even really want it to continue indefinently; I think 3 seasons would have been fine. All I really wanted was her series to end with her aiding in establishing SHIELD.
