AGENT CARTER & CAPTAIN AMERICA Star Hayley Atwell Is Hesitant To Reprise The Role Of Peggy Carter
It's been a while since Hayley Atwell's Peggy Carter had a significant role in the MCU, and while many fans hope she will reprise the role, the actress has revealed whether she is willing to make a return.
When Hayley Atwell made her big debut in the Marvel Cinematic Universe as Peggy Carter in Captain America: The First Avenger, she quickly became a fan-favorite. Her popularity would even help lead to an Agent Carter series, which still has a loyal fan base that hopes the show will be revived.
Despite this, however, Atwell has yet to reprise her role in live-action since the final episode of Agent Carter Season 2. So, as you can imagine, many fans have begun to wonder if she will ever return to as Peggy Carter.
However, the actress addressed this possibility during a recent appearance at Ace Comic Con Seattle, where she took part in a Q&A.
"I wouldn’t have thought starting off in my career that that would happen. You do one character for however many months and then you go and do the next," Atwell told the fans in attendance. "So I think it’s an unusual position to be in — it would be very unusual to have the choice to do that again."
The star also took the time to discuss what Marvel would have to do with the character to pique her interest:
“I wouldn’t want to go over old ground. It would have to be new, there would have to be higher production value so she could do more. I’d have to feel like it’s not just, you know, ‘a case a week with Peggy Carter.’ If she’s had an impact on audiences, let that impact grow, so it delights them, but I think it should be to do with more of the current climate now. What are smart issues to bring up? How to create any sort of kind of social weight, an emotional kind of gravitas to the show.”
Atwell then went on to clarify her overall attitude toward the prospect of returning to the role saying, “So I think on the principle of it, if somebody approached me with it, I would be appropriately kind of tentative about it.”
In all, it doesn’t sound like Atwell is too eager to bring Peggy Carter to life once more but is definitely game if the story is right. Whether this rules out the possibility of Peggy returning for Avengers 4—which is something many fans have speculated on since set pics suggested the film might return to World War II—is unclear.
