Matthew Lillard is no stranger to franchise fare, and he'll make his MCU debut in Daredevil: Born Again season 2. So far, the actor is the biggest new addition to the Disney+ series, though there's no word on who the actor is playing.
Lillard is used to keeping secrets; he'll return as Stu in Scream 6 and will similarly rise from the dead in the Five Nights at Freddy's sequel.
Talking to ComicBook.com, the screen icon was asked what he could share about his Daredevil: Born Again role. "It’s Marvel, so nothing," he said with a laugh. "I think that Marvel clamps down even harder than Star Wars, but I will say I am in the universe."
"It’s kind of a small role right now," Lillard added, "but hopefully people like it, and they bring him back in some capacity." So, we know he survives and is a character whose story could continue if Daredevil: Born Again season 3 becomes a reality.
The actor declined to answer when he was asked about wearing a costume, but did share, "I really dislike [spoilers]. I don’t watch trailers. I saw [Marvel’s] Thunderbolts*, and they had a trailer for Thunderbolts* in the theater. I’m like, 'What are you doing? I’m literally in the theater and you’re showing me the trailer to the movie I’m about to see!' So look, I don’t like it."
"I think, to me, the less we know, the more we’re able to be surprised and to sort of enjoy the experience instead of having expectations," Lillard continued. "And look, there’s only seven stories. We know where 99% of movies are going, so we don’t really need spoilers because we innately understand storytelling if you go to a bunch of movies."
"If somebody out there loves spoilers or loves to unlock what they think is happening and they get to find out as the story progresses, that’s great," he noted. "I’m not the one to ever tell people how to enjoy their entertainment."
We'll have to wait and see what Lillard brings to the table in Daredevil: Born Again. However, it's not outside the realm of possibility that he'll play one of New York's more obscure vigilantes (which would be far more exciting than it being a random supporting character).
Either way, we're hopeful that the actor will get to portray someone from the comic books.
In Marvel Television's Daredevil: Born Again, Matt Murdock (Charlie Cox), a blind lawyer with heightened abilities is fighting for justice through his bustling law firm, while former mob boss Wilson Fisk (Vincent D'Onofrio) pursues his own political endeavors in New York. When their past identities begin to emerge, both men find themselves on an inevitable collision course.
The series also stars Margarita Levieva, Deborah Ann Woll, Elden Henson, Zabryna Guevara, Nikki James, Genneya Walton, Arty Froushan, Clark Johnson, Michael Gandolfini, with Ayelet Zurer and Jon Bernthal. Dario Scardapane is showrunner.
"A masterpiece of epic proportions, Daredevil: Born Again delivers a powerful, unmissable take on the Man Without Fear," we said in our review. "Putting street-level heroics on the map in a way that promises to change the MCU forever, the show is sublime superhero storytelling on a whole new level."
All episodes of Daredevil: Born Again are now streaming on Disney+. As for season 2, that's set to premiere next year.
