DAREDEVIL: BORN AGAIN Season 2 Star Matthew Lillard Teases His MCU Role: "Hopefully, They Bring Him Back..."

Scream star Matthew Lillard has been added to the cast of Daredevil: Born Again season 2, and talks here about how he fits into the MCU and what his future could look like beyond his upcoming debut...

Matthew Lillard is no stranger to franchise fare, and he'll make his MCU debut in Daredevil: Born Again season 2. So far, the actor is the biggest new addition to the Disney+ series, though there's no word on who the actor is playing.

Lillard is used to keeping secrets; he'll return as Stu in Scream 6 and will similarly rise from the dead in the Five Nights at Freddy's sequel.

Talking to ComicBook.com, the screen icon was asked what he could share about his Daredevil: Born Again role. "It’s Marvel, so nothing," he said with a laugh. "I think that Marvel clamps down even harder than Star Wars, but I will say I am in the universe."

"It’s kind of a small role right now," Lillard added, "but hopefully people like it, and they bring him back in some capacity." So, we know he survives and is a character whose story could continue if Daredevil: Born Again season 3 becomes a reality.

The actor declined to answer when he was asked about wearing a costume, but did share, "I really dislike [spoilers]. I don’t watch trailers. I saw [Marvel’s] Thunderbolts*, and they had a trailer for Thunderbolts* in the theater. I’m like, 'What are you doing? I’m literally in the theater and you’re showing me the trailer to the movie I’m about to see!' So look, I don’t like it."

"I think, to me, the less we know, the more we’re able to be surprised and to sort of enjoy the experience instead of having expectations," Lillard continued. "And look, there’s only seven stories. We know where 99% of movies are going, so we don’t really need spoilers because we innately understand storytelling if you go to a bunch of movies."

"If somebody out there loves spoilers or loves to unlock what they think is happening and they get to find out as the story progresses, that’s great," he noted. "I’m not the one to ever tell people how to enjoy their entertainment."

We'll have to wait and see what Lillard brings to the table in Daredevil: Born Again. However, it's not outside the realm of possibility that he'll play one of New York's more obscure vigilantes (which would be far more exciting than it being a random supporting character).

Either way, we're hopeful that the actor will get to portray someone from the comic books.

In Marvel Television's Daredevil: Born Again, Matt Murdock (Charlie Cox), a blind lawyer with heightened abilities is fighting for justice through his bustling law firm, while former mob boss Wilson Fisk (Vincent D'Onofrio) pursues his own political endeavors in New York. When their past identities begin to emerge, both men find themselves on an inevitable collision course.

The series also stars Margarita Levieva, Deborah Ann Woll, Elden Henson, Zabryna Guevara, Nikki James, Genneya Walton, Arty Froushan, Clark Johnson, Michael Gandolfini, with Ayelet Zurer and Jon Bernthal. Dario Scardapane is showrunner.

"A masterpiece of epic proportions, Daredevil: Born Again delivers a powerful, unmissable take on the Man Without Fear," we said in our review"Putting street-level heroics on the map in a way that promises to change the MCU forever, the show is sublime superhero storytelling on a whole new level."

All episodes of Daredevil: Born Again are now streaming on Disney+. As for season 2, that's set to premiere next year.

Back in the 2000s, he would have made a great Carnage in Sam Raimi's Spider-Man films.

@SpiderParker14 -
At the time people were primarily wanting Jim Carrey as Carnage.

I hope he is playing a villain rather then an original supporting character or so…

Perhaps he could be the new Muse if the rumors of his mantle being picked up are true or perhaps someone else inspired to “embrace their true self” like Muse did such as Mr Fear etc.

He could just be a villain for a bit but is left alive for the possibility to be brought back in the future.

Also dude spoke to my soul with saying that they are only seven stories which is a perspective I subscribe to so I love him even more now!!.

Great actor, would love to see them do a final Scoobie-Doo movie with an aged gang trying to figure out why Scooby always looks the same

@Blergh - I'd love to see like a hypertime universe where they started the Mystery Gang in the '60s and due to the brand of weed they're smoking none of them age. Some of the last hippies on Earth, they just got on the road in their Volkswagen and never stopped trucking along.

I want sme clarifiers, cause I don't buy that he say a Thunderbolts* trailer in front of Thunderbolts* without there being some other explanation.

@IAmAHoot - Doubtful it was a full trailer. Likely a promo piece that plays during that commercial-heavy looped content that pretends to be entertainment news that plays before the trailers

How is he back as Stu? He was bleeding out and then had his head caved in by a TV, if memory serves.

I totally agree with him about how trailers show way too much these days. The whole expectations thing is ruining the cinema going experience. Editor's have become exceedingly good at making a trailer look way better than the movie could ever be (OG Suicide Squad for example), and it's really setting a lot of people up for disappointment.

They need to get back to the mystery, and anxiety inducing vibe that the original Alien trailer from 1979 created. It barely shows anything, but gets the idea and feeling of the film across. So when people went and saw it, they could just enjoy it for what it was not for what they expected it to be. That must have been such a ride to experience fresh.

And don't get me wrong, I watch and love the trailers we get these days because it helps create and bolster the hype for me. But I admittedly feel like I would probably love the movies even more if I just knew less.

@RedFury - Ive been saying this for years. The 7 types stories defined by Shakespeare are just redone changing characters and setting and trailers showing too much. This man is speaking to my soul. I normally just watch the first half of a trailer these days if I plan on watching the movie. if not the whole trailer suffices

@RedFury - true

Also spoiler or scooper culture nowadays doesn’t help either regardless of whether the latter turn out to be correct or not…

If they are wrong , they have already created an expectation in the mind of the audience about something so if it doesn’t follow that then that can be dissapointing and if they are right then they spoiled what could have been cool to see on screen.

I personally do try to go into movies or shows with no expectations which is likely why I end up being more positive or not as harsh as others on those.

@TheVisionary25 - man it's so true. The scooper culture has really screwed with people's expectations to the point of turning fans against their favorite IP's even. The out of context info they spew out, whether true or not, taints everything. They've managed to become worse than even the most revealing of trailers.

You are definitely the king of going in with a positive outlook on this site haha. I try my best to keep my expectations low, and enjoy things for what they are as well. I just wish I had better will-power to not click on the spoiler articles and keep feeding the beast lol.

@Psylark - In Scream, for sure, maybe we'll get lucky and he'll have a crazy scarred up face from the TV glass and look something akin to Jerome from Gotham after he started taking on more of the "Joker" persona

Awesome. I've always liked Lillard. Dude's a professional scene stealer, just swoops right in and commands all the attention. Please let it be a recurring character.
