The first trailer for Echo promised a TV-MA, grounded story in line with Netflix's Daredevil. However, Maya Lopez is set to get superpowers - somehow tied to her Choctaw ancestors - which will likely establish a new status quo for the former villain in the MCU.
With those will come a costume, of course, and it's finally been revealed courtesy of a photo taken at a recent press event. While clearly an original creation meant to pay homage to Maya's Native American background, we can also see how the design has pulled inspiration from Echo's time wielding the Phoenix Force on the page.
Talking about the hero's powers in the MCU, director Sydney Freeland recently said, "Her power in the comic books is that she can copy anything, any movement, any whatever. It’s kind of lame. I will say, that is not her power. I’ll just kind of leave it at that."
She's not wrong as, for a while, Echo was essentially Taskmaster-lite. By giving her the powers of the Phoenix in the pages of Avengers, Maya became a force to be reckoned with (so, even though the source of them will be different on screen, Marvel Studios is respecting the comic books).
Previously, a LEGO Minifigure offered an idea of what Maya's costume would look like - suggesting the series was once going to premiere in 2023 - but this photo finally showcases the design in all its live-action below.
What do you think about Echo's MCU costume?
The five-episode streaming event spotlights Maya Lopez (Alaqua Cox) as she is pursued by Wilson Fisk's (Vincent D'Onofrio) criminal empire. When the journey brings her home, she must confront her own family and legacy.
Echo also stars Chaske Spencer (Wild Indian, The English), Graham Greene (1883, Goliath), Tantoo Cardinal (Killers of the Flower Moon, Stumptown), Devery Jacobs (FX's Reservation Dogs, American Gods), Zahn McClarnon (Dark Winds, FX's Reservation Dogs), Cody Lightning (Hey, Viktor!, Four Sheets to the Wind) and Vincent D’Onofrio (Hawkeye, Godfather of Harlem).
The series is directed by Sydney Freeland (Navajo) and Catriona McKenzie (Gunaikurnai).
All five episodes of Echo will premiere on Disney+ and Hulu on January 10.
