Marvel Studios released the first trailer for Echo earlier today, and has now followed the promo with a very interesting announcement.

It seems the studio's first TV-MA rated show will also be the first project under a new banner known as Marvel Spotlight, which takes its name from an anthology comic book series that debuted back in 1971 and was the origin of beloved Marvel characters like Ghost Rider and Spider-Woman.

“Marvel Spotlight gives us a platform to bring more grounded, character-driven stories to the screen, and in the case of Echo, focusing on street-level stakes over larger MCU continuity," said Head of Streaming Brad Winderbaum. "Just like comics fans didn’t need to read Avengers or Fantastic Four to enjoy a Ghost Rider Spotlight comic, our audience doesn’t need to have seen other Marvel series to understand what’s happening in Maya’s story.”

The first two episodes of Echo screened today during Choctaw Nation’s annual Powwow. Director Sydney Freeland was joined by Seth Fairchild, Executive Director of Cultural Services for Choctaw Nation, for a Q&A conversation after the event.

“It’s so exciting to be able to premiere Echo and it is extremely meaningful to myself to have this screening in Chocktaw Nation,” said Freeland. “One of the things we’re most excited about is being able to portray the Chocktaw culture hopefully in an authentic and exciting way.”

We also learned that Maya Lopez's powers would not be the same as her comic book counterpart's, and thanks to CWGST, we may have some idea of how her new abilities will be depicted.

"Marvel Studios presents Echo in which Maya Lopez (Alaqua Cox) struggles to reconnect with her Native American roots while balancing aspirations tied to a life of crime as successor to the brutal legacy of Wilson Fisk (Vincent D'Onofrio) aka Kingpin," reads the most recent synopsis. "In the first episode, we are introduced to Maya Lopez and her struggles."

In addition to Cox, D'Onofrio and Cox (Charlie), the show will also star Chaske Spencer as Henry, Tantoo Cardinal as Chula, Graham Greene as Skully, Cody Lightning as Cousin Biscuits, Devery Jacobs as Bonnie, and Zahn McClarnon as William Lopez.

The origin story of Echo revisits Maya Lopez (Cox), whose ruthless behaviour in New York City catches up with her in her hometown. She must face her past, reconnect with her Native American roots and embrace the meaning of family and community if she ever hopes to move forward.

All five episodes of Echo will stream on Disney+ and Hulu on January 10, 2024.

I feel like the MCU missed a trick by not having the main MCU and a connected, grounded MCU for Street level characters.
It is exactly what I thought the OG Netflix series was meant to be

Sooooooo basically the Marvel Netflix shows

@Himura - I think they’re recognizing the popularity of the Netflix series overall. Maybe they can heal their self inflicted wounds by going this route.

They need to make a Marvel show in the style of Succession. That'll win them acclaim.

The most blatant case of pandering so far. Literally no one asked for this. There was zero demand for an Echo series. The only reason people will be watching is for Daredevil and Kingpin.

@EmeritusII - the panderstone is strong. Make it inclusive with gender, ethnicity, and disability. Kathleen Kennedy and Feige was using the crap out of the stone.

They already messed up by making Kingpin a teddy bear compared to Netflix in the Hawkeye series. He will still feel neutered compared to the Netflix version on Disney+
- kingpins a joke
- daredevils a joke
- thors a joke
- kangs a joke

R.I.P. MCU.

Endgame was a good ending.

@EnergyVamp - Kingpin was kicking the main character's ass until he got hit by an explosion (which he surived>_

- Daredevil was never once the butt of a joke in his apperances so far. Making jokes and being a joke are different.

Agree about Thor and Kang though.

@EnergyVamp - Endgame botched both Thor and Hulk heavily. Borderline heresy.

Some things do not need changing. I am not feeling the power change, her original abilities were just fine. Still looking forward to the show though.
Variant

@RitoRevolto - She's a rather obscure character. Most people would have to run to the internet to even see what her powers are.

It's for the sake of adapting the character and to give us compelling storytelling. It could very well be for the best.
Tasmaniac
Tasmaniac - 11/4/2023, 11:01 AM
@Variant - You mean apart from the comic book reading audience? The audience that got the whole MCU off the ground?

Because being “empowered by the Choctaw women that came before her” is less “lame” than her actual power from the comics? Jesus, the jokes write themselves.
It’s just a bullshit excuse for lazy writing so they can pull any power they like out of their arse whenever they feel like it, instead of actually having to think about working a singular power into the plot. It’s pathetic.
Variant
Variant - 11/4/2023, 12:22 PM
@Tasmaniac - This has to be one of the dumbest attempts at logic I've seen. So somehow carbon copying the character from the comics would be more "original" than the "lazy" writing of weaving her cultural origins into her story? That's some backwards ass shit right there. I mean, do you even know what goes into writing characters and stories? It sounds like you're talking directly out of your ass just for the sake of bitching.

Meanwhile, the trailer has become extremely well received and made A LOT of fools admit they have to eat their words.

As for the comic book reading audience. Um, I'm one of them. I grew up on DC and Marvel comics in the late 80s / early 90s. And she's obscure even to me. Just like GotG used to be before their first film. I used to see their books in the comic shop and always thought how generic they looked. Then the movie was announced and I was confused. Then it came out and I realized just how IP popularity is not at all a prerequisite for quality.

So the only thing pathetic here is your mindless attempt at talking shit.

@RitoRevolto - gotta agree. Her skill set was fine as is

Loki works because they use 0 to very little humour and I barely noticed the woke wagon.

The main cast is an inclusive rainbow only missing a brown person.

Also no one looks bad or inferior to anyone.
Slotherin
Slotherin - 11/4/2023, 8:05 AM
@Lokiwasright - what?
Is woke just a word you use for something representing another culture that doesn't get much representation?
Marvel has been "woke" for years by having diverse characters and explorations of different ethnic backgrounds if so.

Also, Loki is full of humor.
Variant
Variant - 11/4/2023, 8:51 AM
@Lokiwasright - Wtf are you talking about?

Also, y'all gotta stop overusing the word woke. You sound like idiots with absolutely no culture.

Somewhat interesting note aside from the rampant ‘MCU is Dead’ narrative being spun above ^^^^:

Tantoo Cardinal and Graham Greene were both in ‘Dances with Wolves,’ and, if memory serves, were married in that movie. Color my interest somewhat piqued

@SauronthePower - Graham Greene is fantastic. He’s excellent in a movie called Thunderheart with Val Kilmer and San Shepard.

@BestAtWhatIDo - that movie came out when I was in college and all I remember thinking about it was that Kilmer’s overracting in the trailer soured me, hard, on potential viewing.

Greene was very good in ‘The Shack’ and for his 3 minutes of screentime in ‘The Last of Us’ (Ep 6)
