When the first trailer for The Falcon and the Winter Soldier hit, fans seemed to recognize a very familiar Marvel Comics location, and set photos later confirmed that Sam and Bucky would be paying a visit to Madripoor.
The fictional Southeast Asian island is most commonly associated with the X-Men (more specifically, Wolverine), so it was somewhat surprising to get our first glimpse of this setting in an MCU project. Now, Kevin Feige has confirmed that Madripoor was indeed off limits to Marvel Studios prior to Disney's acquisition of 20th Century Fox.
"There's a setting in particular that people have already glimpsed in some of the trailers that is a setting from the Marvel Comics that was not previously available to us, but it's more of an Easter egg in and of itself," Feige explained to EW.
While we obviously shouldn't expect Patch to show up and offer Bucky a cigar or something, this does mark the first step into the "larger sandbox" that became available to Marvel after the acquisition, and it sounds like TFATWS might just have a few more X-Men or Fantastic Four-related surprises up its sleeve.
The first episode of The Falcon and the Winter Soldier hits Disney+ this Friday. Be sure to check back on Thursday for our reviews.
