Iron Fist struggled from the start, and despite a vastly better second season, the Netflix series never really managed to live up to fan expectations. As a result, news of its cancellation on the streaming service didn't come as too much of a blow, though Danny Rand actor Finn Jones remains keen to reprise the role.
In the show's season 2/series finale, Colleen Wing became the new Iron Fist and Danny left New York to find Orson Randall, the man from whom Davos acquired the Iron Fist's powers. Months later, we saw that Danny had stolen two guns from Randall with which he could form Iron Fists.
It was one heck of a cliffhanger to leave things on, and with Marvel Television's Netflix shows now considered "canon," it seems Jones might get a second chance. He just won't be the MCU's main Iron Fist!
According to scooper Daniel Richtman, Marvel Studios is developing a new Iron Fist project. The plan is supposedly for it to put the spotlight on a female lead and there's been at least some talk of this being an animated adaptation.
While Jones returning to the role hasn't been completely ruled out, it sounds like the current idea is for him to make a cameo appearance but not be the main Iron Fist in the MCU.
There are likely many reasons for this, including the fact Jones' take on Danny received a largely tepid response from fans. Then, there's the consensus that it's no longer culturally appropriate for a white man to hold the Iron Fist mantle (the hero's early adventures are widely considered to be packed full of racist stereotypes).
Throw in the fact that many have also deemed Danny as taking on a white saviour role on the page, and you can probably understand why recent comics have depicted him passing the mantle to a character of Asian descent called Lin Lie.
It would make all the sense in the world for this rumoured project to put the spotlight on Jessica Henwick's Colleen Wing but we may see a newly created character too. Remember, it was recently reported that the animated Eyes of Wakanda series will take us to K'un-Lun and introduce a female Iron Fist called Janora.
In the comics, Iron Fist is most often associated with the superhero teams Heroes for Hire and the Defenders. Created by Roy Thomas and Gil Kane, the character first appeared in 1974 and the best-known iteration is Danny Rand, a martial artist who gains the power of the Iron Fist after defeating the dragon Shou-Lao the Undying.
Stay tuned for updates as we have them.
