SECRET INVASION: Cobie Smulders Set To Reprise The Role Of Maria Hill For Disney+ Series

It's been a while since we've seen Cobie Smulders' Maria Hill in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, but the former S.H.I.E.L.D. Agent is set to return for the upcoming Secret Invasion Disney+ series.

Cobie Smulders has joined the cast of Marvel's Secret Invasion, with Maria Hill set to reteam with long-time friend Nick Fury (Samuel L. Jackson) for the upcoming Disney+ series.

This probably won't come as too much of a surprise, as the former S.H.I.E.L.D. Agent has been a loyal ally of Fury's ever since she made her MCU debut in the first Avengers movie. Since then, Smulders has appeared in the likes of Captain America: The Winter Soldier, Avengers: Age of Ultron, Avengers: Infinity War, Spider-Man: Far From Home, and more.

Plot details are still under wraps, but we do know that Captain Marvel's  Ben Mendelsohn will return as Skrull hero Talos. It's also been confirmed that the show will focus on "an infiltration of Skrulls on Earth" (no big surprises there, either).

One Night In Miami star Kingsley Ben-Adir will play the lead villain. We don't know who that'll be, but Dorrek VII, Emperor of the Skrull Empire, is a strong possibility. The cast will also include Olivia Coleman (The Favorite, Tyrannosaur) and Emilia Clarke (Game of Thrones, Solo: A Star Wars Story) in undisclosed roles.

Thomas Bezucha (Let Him Go) and Ali Selim (The Looming Tower) have been tapped to helm the upcoming miniseries, which was written by Kyle Bradstreet (Mr. Robot). Production is now underway.

Such an amazing character with so much development! Yes thank god she is coming back...

@kider2 - Heaven knows you should only use a character if they’ve already been thoroughly fleshed out. It’s not like this tv show in which she’ll probably be a main character could do anything to remedy that “problem “

@suitekid - the point is this news offers little to get excited about.

@Origame - I'm excited. Disney+ hasn't done the best job at everything, but I've definitely enjoyed how they've fleshed out characters that didn't get much love save for a few lines. Hopefully we get to learn something new and personal about her in the time we see her in this.

@Origame - I disagree, it tells me that Cobie Smulders ( an actress who I enjoy) is going to get a chance to further flesh out a currently pretty one dimensional character. It’s not Oscar Isaac leading Moon Knight but I’m plenty excited.

@suitekid - considering she hasn't before and this is a fury show, you don't know that.

@Origame - Yeah I guess Don’t really make sense that Fury would be the only one getting development though.

@suitekid - I mean, I'm sure others are getting development.

Considering comic-Maria's need to control, I think she could be a ininteresring antagonist for the series. It is particularly nice because she is already an established character in the MCU. I'm glad she is coming back!

I just really hope that this Nick Fury solo show doesn't do him in the same way he did Loki, where the only thing he Loki did was just talk to people and played second fiddle to everyone. With the exception of The Winter Soldier movie Nick Fury has been poorly used, Nick Fury is a really cool character in the comics but these MCU movies never show that he deserves better.

@John456 - I liked him in Captain Marvel a lot too, despite his old-man-running

@bkmeijer - Samuel L. Jackson is still a very capable action star with those the Hitman's Bodyguard movies and Shaft 2, but Marvel never allows him to do anything other than show up in brief few seconds cameos or as a father figure.

@John456 - This isn’t a Nick Fury show though, it’s not called Nick Fury: Secret Invasion. He’s just one of the main characters so you shouldn’t rest your hopes on it being fully focused on him. I loved Loki and I thought Loki himself was great in it, I get what you’re saying but I don’t agree.

@JohnCastillo - But Feige said this was a Nicky Fury show but yea didn't say so much centered. I'm still anticipating and will watch Loki season 2 when it debuts hopefully it will include the Loki who gets his powers back.

@John456 - Oh did he? yeah he shot himself in the foot with that comment. Should have just said he was an important character in it, rather than it being centred on him. I do hope Armour Wars is focused on War Machine though even if his name isn’t in the title. I wanna see some backstory, personal life stuff with him

They never utilized this character right, I’m glad to see her come back hopefully for something more substantial, which I remember thinking would happen back in the Age of Ultron days so lol

For some reason I thought this was already announced. Seems like a given, so I guess nice to have confirmation

Wonder if we'll get a new SHIELD (HAMMER?) in this show, or if SWORD is gonna become the primary agency

@bkmeijer - reminds me that they could have done a better job with SWORD in WV.

She’s been really underutilized and really not used as best as she can be at all. This show can rectify that hopefully. Hope we see more of the morally ambiguous Maria.

@BlackBeltJones - I'd like to see Nick Fury also get played a little less positively. For all of his lies, I'm not sure he's ever really screwed up very big (except maybe falling into Loki's playbook in Avengers, but it was still probably the best play). Hydra in SHIELD wasn't Fury's mistake, really, he just got out-spied by sneakier spies.

I'd like to see Secret Invasion show how Fury really [frick]ed up. Maybe he's been using Skrull agents to gather intel for decades (and that's how he raised through the ranks of SHIELD), grew to depend on them, and then they go rogue and it's his fault for keeping his own secret MIB organization with all of Earth's biggest secrets flowing through it, completely vulnerable to a rogue contingent of Skrulls.

Imagine being Maria Hill and finding out for the first time that your boss had been "protecting the Earth" by harboring an army of shapeshifting lizard-people off the books, unknown to anyone but himself. That's enough reason to pull the chute on her unshakable loyalty. Who could really back Fury after that plan goes wrong?
GhostDog
GhostDog - 12/2/2021, 7:36 AM
@Spock0Clock - this is an amassing idea.

Fury’s ultimate con would be a decades long op/intel/or mission that no one else knows about but him.

She could play a legitimately great Maria Hill if they'd just give her a decent part for once.

And the hair!

I'd love to see that Maria Hill short haircut on Cobie Smulders.

@Ha1frican - That's okay; she forgot about you being a member of the audience watching her.

Okay; that made zero sense. Sorry. ; - )
