Secret Invasion remains one of Marvel Studios' most intriguing Disney+ TV shows, especially as it's quite clearly going to be a departure from the comic books. That was an epic, Avengers-movie-sized event story. In contrast, this small screen adaptation will seemingly focus on Nick Fury and Maria Hill on an espionage mission to root out Earth's Skrull imposters.
There's been some speculation that the show will borrow heavily from 2019's Meet the Skrulls comic book series, and a new report may have revealed Emilia Clarke's role.
Apparently, the Game of Thrones star will play G'iah, a Skrull who debuted in that series from writer Robbie Thompson and artist Nico Henrichon. Initially, the shape-shifter helped her fellow aliens invade Earth, only to switch sides upon realising that her people were willing to go to brutal lengths in order to take the planet for themselves.
G'iah and her husband actually impersonated Pepper Potts and Tony Stark for a time, and we anticipate the character being a key player in Secret Invasion.
A concern for many fans is that the storyline is going to get lost in the shuffle of The Multiverse Saga. It's unclear how much The Marvels will tie into the show, while it's also hard to imagine the Skrull Invasion of Earth being all that important compared to what we know is to come in movies like Avengers: The Kang Dynasty and Avengers: Secret Wars.
Fans had been hoping Clarke might be playing Veranke, the Skrull Queen who led the invasion of Earth and posed as Spider-Woman. However, it's unclear whether there are any plans for her moving forward, and at this point, even a full-blown Kree/Skrull War seems a little small scale for the MCU with everything else happening over the next couple of Phases.
Secret Invasion is set to premiere on Disney+ early in 2023, kicking off Phase 5.
