Betty Gilpin's star is very much on the rise. After making a name for herself in Netflix's GLOW, the actress has racked up impressive performances in movies and TV shows such as The Hunt, The Tomorrow War, and the upcoming Mrs. Davis. With that in mind, it's surely only a matter of time before she joins a comic book franchise, right?
Well, it turns out it nearly happened.
During a recent interview with The Playlist, Gilpin mentioned in passing that she auditioned for the lead role in She-Hulk: Attorney at Law. Unfortunately, it seems the timing of her pregnancy put an end to any hopes she might have had about joining the MCU.
"I auditioned for 'She-Hulk' while I was like four months pregnant," the actress recalled. "And I was like, ‘Should I do a take where I incorporate that something’s about to 'Hulk-Out' of me?’"
"Then I was like, ‘No,’ because it was at a point where we didn’t know when the pandemic was over, so I didn’t want to discount myself if they’re like, 'We’re going to be shooting when you’re giving birth.'"
It's a shame things didn't work out for Gilpin, but it's pretty hard to imagine anyone other than Maslany playing Bruce Banner's cousin now. She really made the character her own across the course of the 9-episode Disney+ series, though Marvel Studios doesn't tend to forget the stars who impress them even if they're not ultimately cast.
With that in mind, we have a feeling the actress will be given the opportunity to take another shot at an MCU role somewhere down the line. It's hard to say who that could be, but if the plan is to bring Moonstone into this shared world now Thunderbolts is a franchise, we think Gilpin would be a terrific choice for the villain.
She-Hulk: Attorney at Law is now streaming on Disney+.
