RUMOR MILL: Jon Bernthal Set To Return As THE PUNISHER For New Marvel Studios Project

The Punisher star Jon Bernthal recently hinted that we may not have seen the last of his take on Frank Castle, & a new rumor now claims that Marvel Studios plans on reintroducing the character in the MCU.

Though nothing has been confirmed, the signs are pointing to Marvel Studios reintroducing at least some of the characters from the now cancelled Netflix Marvel shows, and keeping the original actors on to play them.

Charlie Cox is expected to return as Matt Murdock/Daredevil for Spider-Man 3 (as well as the Disney+ She-Hulk series), and there's been talk of Krysten Ritter stepping back into the role of Jessica Jones. Now, a new rumor is claiming that Jon Bernthal is also set to arm-up once again as The Punisher.

According to Giant Freakin' Robot (who have had scoops pan out in the past), there are plans in place for a Punisher "reboot" with Bernthal on board. Whether that would be on the big or small screen is not clear.

Bernthal has previously hinted that we may not have seen the last of his ultra-violent vigilante, and to say his interpretation of Frank Castle was popular with fans would be an understatement. Such a brutal character wouldn't necessarily seem like a good fit for the family-friendly MCU - especially not as a Disney+ series - but we know that Deadpool 3 will be R-rated, so the studio is clearly planning to expand into uncharted waters at some point in the near future.

What do you guys make of this rumor? Do you think we'll see Bernthal back in the saddle as The Punisher?

This is weird news for me. Because i LOVED Frank in DDs2 and i loved Bernthal as Frank.

However i watched season 1 of Punisher and thought it was utter trash. Not Punisher at all. Didn't watch season 2.

Sooooo...i hope he's back i guess. I know he can kill it as Frank (pun intended).

I like the idea of Marvel bringing in these characters without acknowledging the series. Just treating their origins as a given, if you chose to see the series as canon, so you may. But it's not required

Look at the rest of the movies Marvel Studios is producing right now. Then, imagine them making a movie about a hyper-violent straight white man whose super power is shooting people. Doesn’t really add up.

For a guy whose name is @HAILHYDRA ,you sure speak some sense.

@HAILHYDRA - agreed in some respect but they have already said that they'll give Deadpool 3 an R rating and have sent Blade into production. So there's a chance they'll embrace the darker angle Punisher/Blade/Deadpool would lead them on.

Added to that I recently read that Marvel desperately wants to finalize a deal with Nic Cage to reprise his role as Johnny Blaze. So maybe that's an indication as well

@HAILHYDRA - I think the key is who Punisher is pointed against. Having him kill black and brown kids for stealing a TV wouldn't play, but we are living in a time with actual Nazis and white supremacist groups. Or he could go after sex traffickers. The actual violence is what I wonder if Disney will be willing to explore, but there are definitely non-problematic conflicts to put the character into.

@Toonstrack - idk much about Deadpool but he ain’t exactly straight

@HAILHYDRA - If "says he's not straight but is only ever seeing banging females" counts I guess.

@OmegaBlack13 - I don't think he would kill a kid for stealing a TV regardless LOL Frank is crazy but he isn't evil

@OmegaBlack13 - spot on ,,nazi and white supremacist cults mixed in with politicians building them up with money and press, new bad guys?

@Blergh - that isn't what he's talking about. If you look at the upcoming line up it's a lot of female and ethnic diversity. With that mindset and with the political climate we have now (especially after what happened in the capital) its unlikely someone like punisher would be adapted anytime soon.

@Snowbirdd - not a kid no but he would totally kill an adult for doing that. Regardless of race.

Personally I think it's fine if you make it framed as "I don't see color I just kill criminals" but regardless some people probably won't see it that way and just call him racist anyway.

@Snowbirdd - Lol extreme example but you're right, he's not Daredevil 😂

I don’t imagine Disney touching the Punisher with a 10 foot pole in today’s climate... but we’ll see.

I feel like it's going be a team up movie with Deadpool. I believe Marvel R-Rated banner is on the works right now (I'm guessing it will be called Marvel Knights or Marvel MAX). And Deadpool and Blade will be produced under that new banner to diffrentiate them with the PG-13 stuff.
