WHAT IF...? - Here Are All The Returning MCU Actors In Today's Episode (And Who Was Recast)

The first episode of What If...? arrived on Disney+ earlier today, but if you're curious about who does - and doesn't - reprise their Marvel Cinematic Universe roles, we have you covered. Check it out!

Today's episode of What If...? put the spotlight on Captain Carter, and this new take on the events of Captain America: The First Avenger saw the return of several Marvel Cinematic Universe veterans.

Hayley Atwell is obviously back as Peggy Carter, but she's not co-starring alongside Chris Evans. Instead, it's Josh Keaton who plays the hero, and we're sure his name is one you'll recognise. The actor's credits include Peter Parker in The Spectacular Spider-Man, Batman: Soul of the Dragon, and 2018's Spider-Man video game (where he brought Electro to life in place of the wall-crawler).

That's the only major re-cast, though, as the episode features Dominic Cooper's Howard Stark, Neal McDonough's Dum Dum Dugan, Sebastian Stan's Bucky Barnes, Toby Jones' Arnim Zola, and Stanley Tucci's Dr. Erskine. The Walking Dead star Ross Marquand also returns as the Red Skull after replacing Hugo Weaving as the villain in Avengers: Infinity War

Bradley Whitford, meanwhile, makes a surprise return as Colonel Flynn from the Agent Carter One-Shot.

Oh, and as if that's not star-studded enough for you, Samuel L. Jackson and Jeremy Renner return as Nick Fury and Hawkeye for a scene set in the present day at the very end of the episode.

What did you guys think about What If...?'s voice performances?

Just watched it, it was pretty much in line with what I expected, a retelling of CA: TFA. Nothing all that special.

Animation was top tier though.

@RageDriver2401 - not a retelling. Red Skull isn’t watching over the Soul Stone. No Winter Soldier means no T’Chaka murder means not yet T’Challa. That alone has incredible ramifications. Also, no WS means Starks weren’t murdered and whatever that means for the mental state of Tony stark. Then there’s the discovery of Shuma-Gorath and what that must lead to for SHIELD/Hydra. I’m guessing Steve Rogers didn’t live out a quite life so there’s that too. Dr Erskine survived and with him the potential for more super soldiers lived on. Lastly, as far as major impacts of which I can think, Captain Carter seems to be a Captain Britain-esque warrior. Man, if she founded team Excalibur in her timeline, that would be incredible

Of course its always nice if the actors that originated a role could return for the animated series, but realize it is not always possible due to scheduling conflicts, Covid restrictions, or they just may not want to do it. I just hope that the replacements at least sound a bit like the originals. Don't think that is the case with the Tony Stark character, but I need to see his episode and hear it again to be sure.

I still think it's kinda weird that some actors, who have been part of this franchise for so long, didn't show up for this. Come on... It's just a voice role. Not that much work. And if it's money related; they really should be ashamed of themselves after cashing so much with the movies.

@Unites - Actually voice acting is alot harder then acting in a live action project since with voice acting you have to not only act which is hard enough but you also have to channel all of your characters through your voice as well as turn in a good acting performance.

I thought Josh Keaton did great as Steve… the change didn’t stand out or distract me. And Ross Marquand continues to do an excellent Red Skull.

I recognized Bradley Witford and recalled that he was in the one shot that inspired the Agent Carter series… a pretty clever substitution, though the character could have progressed some.

Peggy in action was a lot of fun, and I liked the new places the story went. I’m eager to see the character break free of the expected story beats in the future.

I watched it at 3am when it premiered I was impressed with the animation I recognized a lot of the actors. The action was fast and kept moving I think it only slowed down a couple of times. It was a good episode but I think it should have lead with Chadwick’s episode.

Definitely an episode that was used to establish concept and show potential, but probably overall the weakest first episode of the first D+ shows. A bit too fast paced and zany in places, even though overall I thought it worked for the most part. I think they played this episode safe from a story standpoint as well, making sure to keep most things familiar, but the run time didn't give them much space to explore different things all that much.

On the positive side though, the animation style REALLY shines here, and with better direction it could be a really great signature style for them. It's definitely got room for improvement and innovation, but as a first time use for Marvel it was great. Nowhere was that clearer than during the action scenes, which are already some of my favorite in the MCU. THIS is the level of comic book style action I was hoping this show would achieve and they didn't disappoint. Almost felt like I was watching an anime at times.

Definitely room for improvement, but they've nailed the concept and it'll be cool to see where they expand it from here.

Watched it and loved it! Bucky’s line (about his arm) was hysterical!

The animation was gorgeous. Fighting action was kinetic and fluid and surprisingly violent. But never gory of course.

Looking forward to Captain Carter in the live action MCU. THANKS SYLVIE!!

Only a few issues for me.

I think after getting shot with a bullet, audiences, even kids can handle seeing a bit of blood from a cartoon.

And the tentacle monster felt very out of the narrative but if they needed it, they should have used the creature from the start of GotG2, would have been a cool link

I agree that it's too much of a copy of TFA but other than that I was very impressed by the Red Skull voice actor. FWIW it was enjoyable. YMMV.

I think this was the perfect way to pilot a show like this: The first half is a re-telling of TFA with Peggy instead of Steve, and I think it's done on purpose to create familiarity with the audience before it goes in a wildly different direction in the second half. The voice cast was great, the action and animation was slick as hell. I really enjoyed it a lot, especially as I just re-watched TFA the other day. Can't wait to see Captain Carter in the MCU (hopefully).

I would have enjoyed this regardless, but after the utter awfulness that was the Loebverse (Ultimate Spider-Man, Avengers Assemble, Hulk and the Agents of SMASH and Guardians of the Galaxy animated series), it feels so great to have a good Marvel animated series again.

I watched the Legends episode on Peggy and noticed they included some clips from her One-Shot with Whitford in them, so makes sense they would bring him back. Strange they completely cut Tommy Lee Jones’s character out though. Whitford’s basically replaced his.
