Mary Elizabeth Winstead made a big impact as Huntress in Birds of Prey (And the Fantabulous Emancipation of one Harley Quinn), and while her future in the DCEU remains uncertain, the Fargo actress has another action-heavy role lined up in Netflix thriller, Kate.

Directed by Cedric Nicolas-Troyan (The Huntsman: Winter's War), Kate follows a hired killer on assignment in Tokyo who winds up being poisoned. With the clock ticking, she joins forces with the “spunky teenage daughter” of one of her past victims and uses her last few hours to track down the person responsible and make them her final hit.

“The movie is stuffed with Japanese cultural references: the Lawson convenience stores, the vending machines, the pop culture (with the classic Galactic Wars TV show largely inspired by Star Wars), the anime manga culture (with Tokyo Ghoul) and the music,” Nicolas-Troyan explains to Rolling Stone. “All the needle drops in the film are there to celebrate Japanese female artists of all genres: metal, pop, ballad, hip-hop, and just plain weird.”

Check out the exciting first trailer below along with a new poster.

Woody Harrelson (Venom: Let There Be Carnage) is also on board as Kate's handler, and the rest of the supporting cast includes Tadanobu Asano, Michiel Huisman, and Jun Kunimura.

Kate is set to premiere on Netflix and in select theaters on September 10.

Even though these mid-budget heavy-action/low plot movies are getting more abundant nowadays, I must say I'm not getting tired of them yet (okay maybe a little). As long as the camerawork and choreography is good, I'll be watching.

@bkmeijer - I do like that these type of movies keep getting made, but I would like to see some with male leads make a comeback. I like there to be a good balance, but lately it seems like any action movie with a badass main character that gets the green light has a female lead. Im not saying that females cant be badasses, but I am having more and more trouble suspending my disbelief on some of them. Or, at least hire a woman who looks like she could actually kick ass (like a Rhonda Rousey type build-but not actually her, please god no) instead of these waifish hollywood types. Im sure people will hate on this comment, but I dont care, it's like my opinion man.

@Shivermetimbers - I can see what you mean. Sure the old Hong Kong movies for the majority have male leads, but in Hollywood I can only think of John Wick and Nobody right now.

I don't know if The Equalizer or any Liam Neeson or Gerald Butler movie counts though, but they already have more plot and are less centred around tight fight choreography and more general action.

Looks very stylish, hope it's a pleasant surprise.
I did enjoy Gunpowder Milkshake, put that in the good category.

Nobody was my favourite fun action movie this year.

This looks like one of those movies where her it turns out her handler is the original killer.

Harrelson looks like he's trying to calculate 18% tip.

Even though a Bird of Prey sequel isn't likely, I'd love to see MEW's Huntress join the Suicide Squad in a future film, maybe Amanda Waller gets her to be the team's new leader in case Rick Flag doesn't make it out of the new film alive (HAVEN'T SEEN IT, NO SPOILERS IF ANYONE HERE HAS). Basically have her act like the character in this film Kate or mix that personality with a SMIDGE of the awkwardness she had in BOP. Also she's worked with Will Smith before so they might have chemistry in a Squad movie if he comes back to play Deadshot alongside her.
