After casting Kiernan Shipka (Mad Men) as the titular teenage witch last month, Netflix's upcoming The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina series, which has already received a two-season order, has now announced the additions of several other key characters, including Sabrina's Aunt Hilda and Zelda.
Miranda Otto (Lord of the Rings) will portray the stern Zelda Spellman, who is being described as "Proud and devout, Zelda believes there is no greater honor than serving the Dark Lord as a member of the Church of Night. She is the family’s disciplinarian, fiercely protective of Sabrina and very much Cain to Hilda’s Abel.”
Lucy Davis (Wonder Woman) will play her warmer younger sister Hilda Spellman, "More nurturing than Zelda, Hilda’s motherly nature and warm sense of humor belie a wicked, ghoulish streak. She is as adept at brewing spite jars against her family’s enemies as she is at concocting love potions for the students at Baxter High."
Jaz Sinclair (Slender Man), Chance Perdomo (The Art of Trying), and Michelle Gomez (Doctor Who) have also joined the cast in series regular roles. Sinclair will play Sabrina's best friend Rosalind Walker, Perdomo will play Ambrose Spellman, Sabrina's warlock cousin from England, and Gomez will portray Mary Wardell, Sabrina's favorite teacher and mentor at Baxter High.
The new series, which will be based on the Chilling Adventures of Sabrina comic books, will reimagine the origin and adventures of Sabrina the Teenage Witch as a dark coming-of-age story that traffics in horror, the occult and, of course, witchcraft. This adaptation finds Sabrina wrestling to reconcile her dual nature — half-witch, half-mortal — while standing against the evil forces that threaten her, her family and the daylight world humans inhabit.
