Stranger Things season 4, Volume 1 is now streaming on Netflix, and while we're sure many of you will already have binged right through the seven episodes, for those who haven't, major spoilers follow from this point on.

Season 4 introduces a new big bad in the form of the murderous Vecna, and the Vol. 1 finale reveals Eleven's (Millie Bobby Brown) connection to this seemingly demonic creature, as well as the rest of the Upside Down monsters we've encountered in the previous seasons.

Events kick-off in horrific fashion with a flashback to 1979, where it's strongly implied that a younger Eleven carried out a brutal massacre of her fellow test subjects in Dr. Brenner's (Matthew Modine) lab. Eleven has no memory of this, but over the course of the season she begins to feel violent urges, and when she finally stands up to bully Angela by smashing her in the face with a roller-skate, the teen psychic starts to see herself as a monster.

As it turns out, Eleven wasn't responsible for the murders at all.

When she is tricked into accompanying Dr. Owens (Paul Reiser) back to the Hawkins lab, it's revealed that Brenner is still very much alive and working on something called the Nina Project. Elle agrees to allow "Papa" to restore her powers so she can face Vecna and help her friends, and as her memories slowly return via a stint in an isolation tank, a shocking twist comes to light.

Brenner's assistant Peter (Jamie Campbell Bower), who gave advice to and mentored the younger Eleven, was actually the doctor's original test subject and Victor Creel's son. It's revealed that Brenner took him in after he killed his mother and sister, with his father believing it was the work of a demon. 001 actually killed the other kids in the lab, but Elle was able to use the full force of her abilities to open a portal to the Upside Down and banish him.

As he falls through the sky, we see 001 undergo a terrifying transformation into - you guessed it - Vecna!

We're not certain if Elle actually created The Upside Down with her vast psychic abilities or if she was simply able to access another dimension that already existed, but we're sure to find out when Stranger Things returns for its final season 4 episodes on July 1.

My ranking:

Season 1

Season 3

Season 4

Season 2😕

Season 4 was entertaining and a good time. Dragged a bit but overall elm street vibes so I dug it 💪

@AmazingFILMporg - season 3 was your 2nd favorite? I thought it almost killed the show.

@KaioKen - that blows my mind. Season 3 is my favourite by a mile. Followed by 4, then 2, then 1.

What didn’t you like about 3?
AmazingFILMporg
AmazingFILMporg - 5/30/2022, 12:50 AM
@KaioKen -

Season 3 was fantastic. The monster was scary and disturbing and we got the major characters have character development and there was real stakes and deaths with impact💁

Why didn't you like it💁?
KaioKen
KaioKen - 5/30/2022, 2:36 PM
@AmazingFILMporg - the silly ass monster. Just about everything about the monster was hokey to me, especially the part where it's chasing the kids down the street while the audience is listening to Neverending story. I cringe thinking about it. It was horrible.

Not to mention the secret spies at the mall. The show basically turned into a Saturday morning comedy

It was a good twist, but someone needs to explain to me why they split this season into two parts, but the first part has seven episodes and the second part has two. Is this Netflix’s way of keeping people from binging the whole season and immediately unsubscribing?

You answered your own question 💁
Omario
Omario - 5/29/2022, 5:19 PM
@santoanderson - Not sure. Initially I read that the first 5 would be released then the last 4. Maybe they're doing final touches to the last episodes - cost around $30M/per
Omario
Omario - 5/29/2022, 5:22 PM
@Omario - Episode 9 is going to be 2.5 hrs
Himura
Himura - 5/29/2022, 5:35 PM
@santoanderson - That's basically how I see it.

Splitting the season into multiple parts gives me Attack on Titan vibes which has been frustrating to watch because of it. At least part 2 comes out relatively soon.

bkmeijer1 - 5/29/2022, 5:39 PM
@santoanderson - then its not working for me, because I'm waiting for part two to actually start watching.

If Netflix really wanted that momentum going, they should've just gone with an episode a week.

connorblaze
connorblaze - 5/29/2022, 10:27 PM
@santoanderson - because this season is pretty much two seasons because all the episodes are really long. And episode 8 will be 1.5 hrs and 9 will be 2.5 hrs. Still, I wish they’d just released it all in July.
BigPhilbowski
BigPhilbowski - 5/30/2022, 12:45 AM
@santoanderson - ep 8 and 9 together are almost the same length as the earlier seasons
TheAcuario
TheAcuario - 5/30/2022, 12:11 PM
@santoanderson - after watching the 7 episodes this should’ve been released weekly
Himura

TBH so far I think this is one of my favorite seasons since the first. Probably has a lot to do with all the Nightmare on Elmstreet stuff lol

Also, the villain's origin was done so damn well.
bkmeijer1
bkmeijer1 - 5/29/2022, 5:37 PM
I should maybe actually watch the show before reading this...

That said, before I start watching, can anyone tell me if Hopper's return is done in a satisfying way? I don't remember a lot from earlier seasons except for him being in Russia, so that's the only thing I really look forward to.
KaioKen
KaioKen - 5/29/2022, 5:44 PM
@bkmeijer1 - return? 😬

You should just watch it.
Himura
Himura - 5/29/2022, 5:48 PM
@bkmeijer1 - I think his story is interesting, it's one of the weaker aspects of the season but the other parts of the season make up for it by a lot.

There's a recap at the beginning of the season that'll get you all caught up with all that pertinent information.
bkmeijer1
bkmeijer1 - 5/29/2022, 5:51 PM
@KaioKen - maybe not return since he wasn't really gone to begin with, so what I mean moreso is how his arc is handled (which I assume he has).

I'll probably give it a watch when Part 2 is only. Really don't like waiting between episodes, even if that means I'll get spoiled
bkmeijer1
bkmeijer1 - 5/29/2022, 5:53 PM
@Himura - okay gotcha. Guess I know where to put my expectations.

Also, good to now the recap actually recaps stuff. Really don't those 2 or 3 minute recaps thatare just a reel of moving inages without providing context.
KaioKen
KaioKen - 5/29/2022, 5:42 PM
Season 4 may be even better than Season 1. I didn't even think I would even watch this season after #3. I was like, "this show jumped the shark" with the stupid monster chasing them down the street.

But man, Season 4 hooked me from the first episode. The 4th and 5th episode dragged a bit but Season 1 was the same way. Overall, if Season 4 isn't better than Season 1 is definitely the closest. That was great.
ReverseFlasher

@KaioKen - s03 was great sorry you got caught up on trivialities and contrivances in a show thats filled with them every season.
KaioKen
KaioKen - 5/30/2022, 2:38 PM
@ReverseFlasher - it's amazing to me that people like that season. It's baffling really. It had no suspense. The show is built on suspense and low grade horror. If you like season 1, I can't understand how you like season 3. The goofy ass mall with secret soviets? Wow, I'm stunned
ReverseFlasher
ReverseFlasher - 5/30/2022, 5:23 PM
@KaioKen - character arcs were best yet, monster and horror was great nod to thing, and nostalgia was perfect… im guessing you werent alive in the 80s?
KaioKen
KaioKen - 5/30/2022, 9:15 PM
@ReverseFlasher - we're just gonna have to disagree, but it's safe to say that interest in this show was at an all time low after season 3. In regards to my age, I would have thought you all were very young if you liked that season. It sucked. Have a good one

I love this show and season, but have some questions like why would Brenner keep that crazy powerful dude around? Even with the chip that was stopping his abilities, why risk it? Esp with all those powerful kids around that he could trick or turn, like he did.
MarkCassidy

@jaysin420 - I think it's prob just one of those suspension of disbelief things... This show has a lot of em! Really enjoyed this season though. Some amazing moments. Max's Kate Bush escape scene was so good.

@RorMachine - I really thought she was going to die, if she did it would have been so good (but still awful) but then I remembered in the trailer we see Lucas holding her at Billy's headstone
KaioKen
KaioKen - 5/29/2022, 7:14 PM
@RorMachine - exactly. Like, how is it only Nancy's house is in the upside down and how exactly did that light thing work.

Don't worry about it. That's how
MarkCassidy
MarkCassidy - 5/29/2022, 7:33 PM
@abd00bie - I thought she was dead meat. I'm glad she lived cos she's a great character, but it would have been a very powerful moment if she didn't make it.
jaysin420
jaysin420 - 5/29/2022, 8:47 PM
@RorMachine - Ok no big deal, just curious if I missed something. Maybe it was a power move by Brenner, thinking nobody is smarter than him and wanting to humble 1.
BlackSpiderman
BlackSpiderman - 5/30/2022, 2:12 PM
@RorMachine - That Max scene in episode 4 is probably my favourite at this moment. I'm going to re-watch season 4 again but that scene was pretty tense for me. I thought it was well executed.

@r4dagast - I don't think he's done anything to be a favourite of mine yet, Max on the other hand stabbed Vecna in his tentacle-y neck in the mindscape

ngl this was prob one of the most satisfying moments in TV history bc TV bullies rarely get what they deserve. The good guys are always expected to be better than tht so I fully applaud El for breaking tht girl’s nose with the skates.
Gizmoduck
Gizmoduck - 5/29/2022, 11:19 PM
Ranking wise, i put it up there with 1 & 3. 2 was good, but 1, 3, and 4 so far have been really so much better than 2.

Once i noticed the broken hands i was like, either 11 is vecna or created vecna, was sort of correct by the end. Interesting she basically created the upside down.

Dustin thinking the mindflayer being the boss is odd, since even in D&D Vecna is the big bad in Greyhawk - mindflayers are just strong minions.
