The final episode of Stranger Things 3 left fans buzzing over the fate of Hawkins police chief Jim Hopper (David Harbour). The fan-favorite character was seemingly killed off in the season finale, sacrificing himself as Joyce destroyed the Russian machine that was opening up a portal to the Upside Down.

However, not everyone was sold on Hopper's death. The lack of any body or remnants and a cryptic mid-credits sequence have led many to speculate that Hopper is still alive and will return in Season 4.

For those who may have missed it, the mid-credits sequence sent us to a hidden Russian science facility/prison where we see two guards reference an imprisoned "American." We're never shown who that prisoner is as they instead choose a different prisoner to become the feast of a Demogorgon. Was it Hopper in the jail cell? Did he somehow escape the massive explosion? Did he jump through the portal before it was shut?

All of these are questions heading into Stranger Things Season 4, but star David Harbour is adding to the mystery with a cryptic puzzle on social media that fans have already unraveled. Over the past week, Harbour had been changing his Instagram profile picture to various numbers; so far the profile picture was changed from 6 to 1 to 8 and back to 6.

It didn't take long for fans to realize Harbour was listing the phone number for Murray Bauman (played by Brett Gelman), the journalist who helped Hopper and Joyce take down the Russians. Dialing the secret number (618-625-8313) led to a pre-recorded message:

“Hi, you have reached the residence of Murray Bauman. Mom, if this is you, please hang up and call me between the hours of 5 and 6 pm as previously discussed, okay? If this is Joyce, Joyce, thank you for calling, I have been trying to reach ya. I have an update. It’s about, well, it’s probably best if we speak in person. It’s not good or bad, but it’s something …”

Could this update be at all related to Hopper? Showrunner Matt Duffer and star David Harbour have both commented on the mysterious cliffhanger for Stranger Things Season 3, but only offered subtle hints as to Hopper's fate.

Do you think Hopper was the American prisoner or is he stuck in the Upside Down? Or do you think he's really dead?

The love letter was a grandiose moment, however, this is the 80s.

And nothing screams 80s than the epic 80 Rock/Love Ballad the Duffer brothers are going to amp up as 11 and Hopper see each other again in the final episode of Season 4 and run to each other. Not a dry eye.

The only question is...which 80s hair band will it be who provides the sound track to that moment?

@IronGenesis - It has to be Journey. Nobody did, has done, or ever will do love ballads better than Journey. They cornered the market on them.

Not gonna lie, I'd like to see Stranger Things go the IT Chapter 2 route.

@KWilly - They should do that when the kids are actually older (like 20 years later). That would be cool.

@Unites - By that time, Stranger Things would've already had a reboot and a spinoff, lol.

Here's Bald Eagle's full# (618) 625-8313 if anybody wants it. I just called 3x, a happy parasite.

@Battabing - I'm not a fan of this. Not because she's black or a female but because I feel like the 00 designation is the serial number for their licence to kill.

@Battabing - It's totally stupid. "007" isn't the Main character of the James Bond films...JAMES BOND is. Is that so hard to understand? I would have no problem with Idris Elba playing Bond if they wanted to get a Black actor in the role, but a Woman is just...stupid. What's next? Tiffany Haddish as Superman?

I went into the season feeling like I'd remembered the Duffers several months ago saying that being the summer of 1985, Back to the Future would have a fairly significant influence in it. When Steve sneaks the kids into the theater in the beginning, I was expecting it'd be to see that.
Anyway cut to the ending, and since there'd been very little BTTF referencing by now, a little part of me was still wondering if exploding the machine was going to wind up transporting Hopper (and possibly even the original Russian works we saw at the start of ep1) either forward or backward in time somehow.
But obviously not.

I simply must've been remembering wrong. Plenty 80s references abound as usual, but the biggest plot one was clearly (and not even 80s) Invasion of the Body Snatchers.

@CaptCoulson - Yeah there was some references to the 78 Body Snatchers, which was funky. Also the 80s Blob, Terminator, and a few George Romero movies. I liked this season a lot, and I think next season may deal in time travel. I think the BTTF thing was a tease, because while 1986 housed The Fly and Aliens (both of which no doubt will be referenced) it also was home to one of the greatest time travel movies of all time: Star Trek VI: The Voyage Home.

That's some awesome 80's style throwback marketing. Not the IG part obviously, but the call a number get a clue schtick. I like it.

Am I the only one who thinks Hopper is just an asshole? Like the guy spent the entire time drinking alcohol and yelling at his daugter and his love interest?

I am thinking "the American" is Bob. They showed him get attacked but what if after Hop and Joyce left he got rescued somehow and nursed back to health and taken prisoner. Hop is alive but stuck in the Upsidedown

It's clearly Barb the Russians are taking about. 😁

I think the American is actually Bob Newby and Hopper, unfortunately isn't dead. He is going to be the Mind Flayer in Season 4. Thats what I think. He will come back from the upside down and by the end of the season he will be outed as the true villian, not the Mind Flayer or Demagorgon but something new and season 5, the final season should all about how to finally kill him and end the upsidedown.

All I know for certain is that it will be great fun finding out how Hopper survived IF he did. There are numerous possibilities. The Duffers have kept us entertained for three seasons now. I see no reason for that to change with Season 4.

I have a really strong feeling "the American" is Dr. Brenner (Eleven's "Papa") from season one.
