"F*ck The Empire!" ANDOR Team Reveals How Close They Came To Getting STAR WARS' First F-Bomb In The Show

The team behind Disney+'s acclaimed Andor have weighed in on the show's season finale, and the much-discussed funeral scene in which Maarva was originally supposed to drop Star Wars' first F-bomb.

It came very close to being the F-bomb that started a rebellion, but it wasn't meant to be.

One of the most powerful scenes in the first season of Andor occurred in the season finale, when Maarva Andor (Fiona Shaw) addressed the citizens of Ferrix at her own funeral via a pre-recorded holographic message. After a rousing speech urging her people to take up arms against their oppressors, Maarva concludes with, "fight the Empire!"

As previously reported, the character was originally supposed to say "f*ck the Empire," but the creative team simply couldn't get Disney to sign off on it.

“But Disney wouldn’t let us use it,” director Benjamin Caron tells Variety. “So we changed it to ‘fight the empire.’ I remember having a call with Tony Gilroy saying, ‘Are we gonna get away with this?’”

Writer/showrunner Tony Gilroy went so far as to write a legal brief. “I wrote a memo on it and said, ‘Here’s why I think it’s economically prudent, and here’s why I think it’s good.’”

To be fair, the scene still works very well without the profanity, but would allowing Shaw to deliver the line as originally intended, have had a bit more impact? Some feel it may have had less, since "fight the Empire" is really more of a call to arms.

What is this obsession with putting needless real-world swears into Star Wars?! It’s the exact opposite of what Lucas wanted. It’s a franchise primarily for 12 year olds.

Aside from anything, f**k doesn’t exist as a word in Star Wars, they have established words like Kark, ect. I thought it was dumb enough that they used words like s**t and bastard. Tony Gilroy obviously wants to feel like he’s working on an adult show because he doesn’t like Star Wars but glad Disney put their foot down.

@Nightwing1015 - Agreed.

It’s like the obsession with getting nudity on network tv shows back in the early 90s.

Just more of Hollywood depravity that they are trying to make commonly acceptable.

Talking about it being “economically prudent” 😂 wtf does that even mean. It’s cheaper to use f**k 🤔

Do we really need it? It's like how new Trek uses foul language, it's supposed to be a futuristic society that doesn't rely on such menial words.

I don't think we ever need an F bomb in Star Wars. They can use an alien curse word that means the same thing.

"Frack the Empire!"

Like establish her using an alien language word in place of [frick] all season, so when this moment comes she can say "_____ the Empire!"

Would've been impactful but ultimately it wasn't necessary. The point was still made, the important thing was the rallying cry of the entire speech not the shock value of one word.

Also even with this more mature content, Star Wars should still be somewhat accessible to people of most ages to some degree or other.

Also the Star Wars universe already has its own swear words, feels kinda odd if real world swear words start getting added in all of a sudden. Kinda like how it'd be weird to suddenly start getting references to real planets and stuff from our reality.

The reason they want to use curse words is mainly because the writers are so horrible they have to augment their writing with profanity to supplement their lack of intelligence.

Because the word "F*ck" is so needed in a Star Wars movie or show.

That sort of edgy teenage shit works well if you're looking for social media clout for a week or two, but wouldn't hold up over time. It's hollow shock value at its finest, nothing more.

They already used ''shit'', so I wouldn't have though [frick] was that out of place either.

And also, Disney allowed a ''open the [frick]ing door'' in a Marvel movie, while here it actually carries a certain weight to it.

The fact that he fought for this or even thought about using that word or anything similar for a second makes me so freaking glad I didn't watch past the 1st episode. This guy wants to claim he knows the universe of SW and then does something so against what exists in that world. I am a person that is a fan of using curse words and think most people should chill out with the judgements when people use them, but SW does not take place in our world it exists in a galaxy far away and a long time ago.

Andor is a masterpiece. And the last episode is a masterclass on how you do an season finale. All the writing, the characters, the actors, the soundtrack (the funeral march is pure gold )... it´s 10/10 for me.
