OBI-WAN KENOBI Was Set To Feature Ray Park's Darth Maul Before He Was Replaced By Darth Vader

Surprisingly, Obi-Wan Kenobi wasn't always set to focus on the Jedi being pursued by Darth Vader; instead, it was Darth Maul who was set to take aim at his old foe, and it came very close to happening!

It's no secret at this stage that Obi-Wan Kenobi went through a lot of creative changes during its journey to Disney+ (it was once set to be a movie), but we didn't realise is how big some of them were! According to THR (via SFFGazette.com), Darth Maul was originally set to appear in the series with Ray Park reprising his role from The Phantom Menace!

When writer Hossein Amini was working with director Deborah Chow on Obi-Wan Kenobi, it sounds like the plan was for Maul to be the lead villain. While he died at the hands of "Ben" Kenobi in Star Wars Rebels, the events of this story were obviously set to take place a few years before that clash.

After working with Jon Favreau and Dave Filoni on The Mandalorian, Chow sent them the scripts to see what they thought. Both were concerned Obi-Wan Kenobi was repeating what their show had already done by having the Jedi Master looking after a young sidekick (see: Din Djarin and Grogu). There was no Darth Vader at this point and Maul was going to be one of many hunting down his old foe with Luke, but Favreau and Filoni encourage Chow to "go bigger" with her plans.

As a result, production was paused and a new, older Luke Skywalker was cast (Grant Feely).

The trade notes that Park was on set for pre-production and also involved in early stunt training. One source claims that footage of Maul was shot, but the character was ultimately written out and Filoni stepped in to help figure out how Vader could be brought back alongside the Grand Inquisitor from his Star Wars Rebels series. These plans for Maul also likely contradicted much of what he did there and in The Clone Wars, so it's no wonder the former Sith Lord failed to make the final cut.

It's hard not to get excited over the prospect of a series featuring Maul chasing down Obi-Wan given their history, but Vader's return does feel like a much bigger deal. Hopefully, there is still a place for a live-action take on the villain, especially after what we saw at the end of Solo: A Star Wars Story.

Villain should've been Qi'ra from the Han Solo movie

@UncleHarm1 - villain should have been Darth Binks.

@UncleHarm1 - would enough time have passed for the events of Solo to have happened at this point in the timeline?

I know han is older than luke by at least 10 years but he seemed a bit too old considering Luke’s age here

Good choice especially since there’s nowhere else to go with Obi Wan and Maul

@NightBoyWonder - Yeah, honestly. Maul vs Obi-Wan has happened several times, and the last time they fought felt like a perfect conclusion for their feud.

However, Hayden Christensen's Darth Vader hasn't been seen in quite a while and it'd be good for his version of the character to get some No Way Home-style redemption.

Disney cut ties with Park after he shitposted his wife on Instagram because he thought she was cheating on him. Really sad.

Would’ve muddied his Rebels appearance. And the shit with Park and his wife was a mess.

Neither makes sense

Maul was looking for Obi-Wan in Rebels and died when he found him

Obi-Wan and Vader should not come into contact until the Death Star, you can wave off bounty hunters, maybe even Inquisitors but Vader?

Isn't this guy suppose to be keeping a low profile

@micvalpro - that's where Reva comes in. Just hope she isn't a one-off Inquisitor like all the others. About time we get an unhinged Inquisitor that won't have doubts by the end of the story

The worst episode of Rebels was the Ben vs Maul clash. The whole episode was Ezra wandering around then its just the final battle between Ben and Maul.... the potential they killed with that episode I will never forgive.

@ElricReturns - I'm the complete opposite. Yeah the Ezra stuff takes away from it, but this samurai-like stand-off felt great too me. Kenobi clearly moved, whereas Maul was still hung up on the best (and let it get the better of him)

Wish they had done it. He’s already dead in Rebels but this takes place before that and I’d like to have seen that in live action.

Maul is better than Vader.

Would have preferred this 100%. A New Hope should be the first time that Obi-Wan and Vader encounter each other since Mustafar. It holds so much more weight.

"Go bigger". After seeing Ray Park's sex tape he leaked, I have to wonder if Favreau is referencing Park's small size.

I've lost a lot of faith in Dave Filoni. I used to think he knew what was best for Star Wars, but instead I feel like he just wants to smash all his action figures together
bkmeijer2
bkmeijer2 - 3/16/2022, 7:47 AM
@Dredd97 - because of the Boba Fett show? Feels kinda unfair, given how much great stuff he did also give us. Including the Mandalorian, which even came from the idea of his repainted Boba Fett action figure
Toonstrack
Toonstrack - 3/16/2022, 1:21 PM
@Dredd97 - lol that's always been the case. Thered no objective view of whats best for star wars. Everyone's too clouded by their own nostalgiac vision of it to do that
Dredd97
Dredd97 - 3/16/2022, 3:15 PM
@Toonstrack - I know. and as imperfect as The Last Jedi was, at least it tried new things. Hell, Mando season 1 didn't even have jedi. that was a huge plus. but now it's the same 7 characters and planets until it becomes unprofitable
