We're now just a few days away from the two-episode premiere of The Acolyte, and between the persistent rumors and the trailers possibly revealing a little too much, it seems Lucasfilm has given the cast the go-ahead to discuss a certain plot point relating to Amandla Stenberg's character.

If you'd rather go in knowing as little as possible, here's your spoiler warning.

Previous reports have claimed that Stenberg will actually play a dual role as twins, one of whom carries out the Jedi assassinations and frames the other for the murders.

During an interview with The Electric Playground, Stenberg confirmed that she is indeed playing twins named Mae and Osha, while also revealing some new details about both sisters.

"I play twins in the show. Their names are Osha and Mae and they kind of skew towards different sides of the force. Although that’s kind of up for debate and hopefully there’ll be one, once everybody gets to see the show. Mae is on a path for revenge – she’s on a warpath. Something that happened in their childhood separated these twins and now Mae is out for revenge. Osha, who is a mechanic, and who used to be a part of the Jedi order, but left as a padawan, is accused of the revenge that’s taking place and has to defend herself while also discovering that her twin sister is still alive.”

We have heard that Manny Jacinto will also play twins, but that's yet to be confirmed.

In The Acolyte, an investigation into a shocking crime spree pits a respected Jedi Master (Lee Jung-jae) against a dangerous warrior from his past (Amandla Stenberg). As more clues emerge, they travel down a dark path where sinister forces reveal all is not what it seems.

The series also stars Lee Jung-jae, Manny Jacinto, Dafne Keen, Charlie Barnett, Jodie Turner-Smith, Rebecca Henderson, Dean-Charles Chapman, Joonas Suotamo, and Carrie-Anne Moss.

Leslye Headland created the series, based on Star Wars by George Lucas, and serves as an executive producer along with Kathleen Kennedy, Simon Emanuel, Jeff F. King and Jason Micallef. Charmaine DeGraté and Kor Adana are the co-executive producers. Rayne Roberts, Damian Anderson, Eileen Shim and Rob Bredow are the producers.

Headland also directed the premiere episodes (Eps. 101 & 102). Directors Kogonada (Eps. 103 & 107), Alex Garcia Lopez (Eps. 104 & 105) and Hanelle Culpepper (Eps. 106 & 108) round out the directing duties on the series.

Award-winning composer Michael Abels, known for his work on Get Out and Us, scored The Acolyte.

“In January 2016, Stenberg came out as bisexual[59][60][61] though she subsequently stated that pansexual was an accurate term as well.[62] That March, Stenberg came out as non-binary,[63][64] and uses both she/her and they/them pronouns.[65][66] In June 2018, in an interview with Wonderland magazine, she came out as gay.[67][68]”

This all makes sense now LOL

@Matchesz - wow she really doesn't know who she is yet apparently. I also don't see the point of "coming out". How about just BE and EXIST? Is it in support of the communities? Which I'd understand. I can't help but wonder if it's a need to feel like you matter in the world. Self importance. We are just carbon based organisms on a floating rock orbiting a star...

@Matchesz - it's over-inflated ego and it's also feeling more and more like a generational thing. Generally, boomers had less affectionate and giving parents due to their parents growing up in the depression. Then boomers had kids and wanted to give their kids what they lacked growing up. Gen Xer's grew up being told by their over-compensating parents they could be anything they wanted to be. By the time millennials were teens, they were all told they were super special and eventually felt they needed to find a way to make themselves stand out from all the other super special kids. Hence the constant one-upping and attention seeking of making themselves appear more important through nonsense labels and made-up social hierarchies.

@Blergh - sounds like a young person being brainwashed by todays media, before a few years ago nobody knew wtf non binary meant. Now every young person is claiming it since its the trend. Think why she felt the need to discuss it in so many interviews instead of keeping it to herself, because it catches disneys attention and gets a whole show written around her. Im not against gays but its obvious the lgbtq mob runs disney. Being a gay activist gets u hired and speaking ur opinion against it gets u fired and blacklisted

@Vigor - Yeah, it makes me have more respect for the Elliot Pages of the world if what @Matchesz wrote is true. I agree with you, it does feel more about needing to proclaim something. I get everyone's on the journey, but maybe talk about it after you know where your going and I can start to take it more seriously. That said, I could care less once I start watching. Plenty of actors I'm like wtf w/in real life, barring any real legitimate lunacy, but are good on screen.

The villain will be made to be sympathetic.

The Jedi will be portrayed to be the cause and the true villains.

There is no light or dark, only grey, as most modern terrible Hollywood writing goes these days.
Vigor
Vigor - 5/30/2024, 8:16 AM
@mountainman - I like the grey because it better aligns with how I see the world. If I felt the world was good or bad, I would be a much more cynical person. It's easy to go down that path. I may even become hateful myself which is like becoming the very thing you hate

So remembering that people are rarely truly evil and sometimes are just misguided, helps me to still connect with other humans who otherwise appear terrible by their actions and words
mountainman
mountainman - 5/30/2024, 8:37 AM
@Vigor - I get that the world is grey and very often there are not fully good and bad guys. The issue I take with the modern Hollywood approach of making every bad character sympathetic, is that it seems to try to justify their evil actions.

Seeing why a bad person became bad is one thing. But trying to justify it is another.

A few examples:

- Monica saying to Wanda that they will never knew what you gave up at the end of WandaVision completely disregarded that she made mental slaves of an entire town.

- Trying to make Reva sympathetic in Obi Wan because of the trauma of her childhood tried to justify all the jedis she killed in her adult life.

- Making WenWu sympathetic in Shang Chi tried to brush all the innocents he killed under the rug.

You see, there often are not completely good or bad sides. But there are completely good or bad actions. Whether in fiction or reality, every bad guy thinks they are the hero of their own story.

Even if you look at Hitler and the Nazis, historically they probably wouldn’t have risen to power if, at the end of WWI, the full blame wasn’t placed on Germany and the Treaty of Versailles wasn’t instituted. I can recognize those historical facts while still recognizing that Hitler and the Nazis were pure evil.

The OG Star Wars trilogy may have over simplified things, but to some extent the traditional heroes journey and the light/dark good/bad sides in our fiction are good lessons to learn.

Today we are far too cynical and too many people justify bad actions for what they see as a good cause. The protests that sometimes turned into riots of 2020 had a justified argument behind them - police brutality and the disproportionate impacts on certain communities. But the fires, looting and violence that happened in some of those places impacted innocent people that were not the cause of the grievance. On the other side of the spectrum, people who rightly feel that trans women shouldn’t compete in women’s sports have a point. But some on the right take that justified view and turn it into blanket hate of LGBTQ people.

So you can have a justified cause. You can state that often times pure good and pure evil are not the reality. But actions can be evaluated on their individual merit.

I don’t know what the story of this will be. I made some assumptions. But this trend has been in place in Hollywood recently. Tearing down old institutions. Saying that any action is ok as long as your cause is just. This show may or may not follow that path. We don’t know yet. But we (as a society) do need pure heroes again. We need good guys that are good and bad guys that are bad. Maybe it isn’t realistic per se. But it’s an ideal to strive towards.

@mountainman - I think Hollywood is reacting to the dollars and reviews. Anytime we had pure mustache twirling evil bad guy, reviews called it out as a con. Look at the villain of Thor 2 as an example. Audiences but even the actors themselves want sympathetic villains. Sometimes it works (Thanos), sometimes it doesn't (flagsmashers).

I thought Reva got what she deserved. She had a back story and motivation for becoming a two timing evil bitch, but the story wasn't kind to her. She got bitch slapped by Vader and Obi once he got his MOJO back. Just because we learned her back story doesn't mean the story wanted us to see her as a good person who turned things around.
And you may be right about Wanda but I dont remember her putting the hex on the town consciously. Did I misremember that? It's been a while since I saw the series. Hating on Wanda for her reality warping mental illness would be like hating on professor X for giving people fatal headaches in the movie Logan while in his sleep

I think the best example that DOES supports your argument is the main villain from falcon and the winter soldier. These other examples aren't really fair in my opinion

@Vigor - I’m sure there are more but we don’t need to analyze every production.

Tying back to this show - I’m super skeptical simply based on the low quality output Star Wars has had in recent years (in my personal opinion of course). I don’t like some things Steinberg has said in interviews, but I’m beyond using that type of stuff to “boycott” a production. I also don’t like Hedland, but as said previously, that isn’t a reason that I personally do or do not choose to watch things.

I’ll wait for reviews. If it sounds like it’s free from the things that tend to turn me off from watching things I’ll give it a chance. I have no issues with women or minorities in lead roles, my concerns usually stem more from bad writing or character choices.

I hope it’s good. I’m skeptical. But I guess we will all find out soon enough.

I wish they had kept this in the bag a bit longer since the show is only a few days away or so from premiering but oh well..

However I guess Headland’s original pitch gave this away since she said this was Frozen meets Kill Bill set in the SW world…

Kill Bill in that Mae is killing Jedi out of revenge but moreso for the martial arts influence & level of choreography that we saw in those films while Frozen is due to the emotional core or heart of the story being the relationship between the 2 sisters.

Anyway , still looking forward to this regardless!!

@Izaizaiza - Yeah, I almost prefer this to them doing a KOTOR movie or series. Mostly, because I would want a more direct adaptation ala LOTR and I don't think they'd do that. Would have worked more for a SWTOR as Fallout has show as you're not bound to a particular character.
