STAR WARS: Dave Filoni Reveals Whether His Upcoming Movie Will Bring THE MANDALORIAN To A Close

All signs point to Dave Filoni's upcoming Star Wars movie being a new take on "Heir to the Empire," and the filmmaker has now revealed whether ending The Mandalorian is part of his plan for the project.

At Star Wars Celebration, we learned that Dave Filoni will orchestrate the escalating war between the Imperial Remnant and the fledgling New Republic in a new movie. Alongside producer Jon Favreau, they will bring together many of the threads of Disney+'s original series in a cinematic event.

Many fans have wondered if it's meant to serve as a conclusion to The Mandalorian-era of storytelling, and Filoni weighed in on whether that's the case during a recent interview with IGN (via SFFGazette.com).

"I don't know if I'd call it that as such," he responded when asked if the movie serves as a finale. "I think of the time period now, the New Republic time period, and it's something that has existed long before we were ever making 'The Mandalorian.'"

"The idea that after 'Return of the Jedi', there was a new republic and the heroes still had to defend that republic from the remnant empire, is a very old idea that we brought into the first season of 'The Mandalorian' because it's what was always there."

Favreau has made it clear he has no end in sight for The Mandalorian, so we shouldn't be surprised that the series is likely to continue after this untitled project.

If we had to hazard a guess, this Star Wars movie will primarily revolve around the battle against the "Heir to the Empire" Grand Admiral Thrawn. Serving as an Episode 6.5 of sorts, we're sure it will be an epic story that, rather than concluding this New Republic period of storytelling, simply sets the stage for even more stories.

After all, there's a huge gap between Return of the Jedi and The Force Awakens!

It's unclear when Filoni's movie will be released in theaters, though the project revolving around Daisy Ridley's Rey is expected to be up first and is currently eyeing a December 2025 release.

But this whole film was marketed originally as being the “finale” to the Mandoverse stuff.

Also I’m gonna be honest, it’s all bittersweet giving us Thrawn when everyone knows thirty years later we’re just gonna go into the sequels which [frick]s everything up anyway.

@Kurban - really don't see the connection there. It's not like with grogu considering the sequel trilogy basically confirms he dies.

@Origame - So the sequels are set about ~30 years after The Mandelorian right? If at 50, Grogu is still a baby, at 80 wouldn't he still be a young child?

I still think the Grogu training with Luke for “2 years” then going back to Mando is stupid. But now that he’s back with Mando, theoretically, he could never be involved with anything Jedi-related for a very long time afterwards.

How does the species age and grow? Yoda was around 800 when he died right? Grogu is a baby at 50. Do they hit full maturity at 200? Even in the Rey movie, he will still only be 100. So if we get Grogu in rhat, is he going to be a stupid teenager version?

@mountainman - I mean, idk. Grogu being alive for the sequel trilogy makes that story significantly worse. He's already way too powerful to not make an impact against Kyle Ren and the first order.

Plus, I doubt he'd just no longer be training there just because he wants to be a mandalorian. Better to train an actual force user who's gonna do his own thing than risk a force user that powerful going on their own and turning to the dark side. So he should still be part of the jedi academy, and subject to the purge.

@Origame - He won’t be though. If rumor has it, he’ll pop back up for Rey’s Jedi Order. Figure that one out.

@Kurban - him being alive during that time is probably a dumber choice than bringing Palpatine back. And that's saying something.

I think there is something to be said about characters that have full arcs within a single series, and at the end of that series they die to finish their story, one way or another, in tragedy or triumph or both. And as a pseudo western, it would be more fitting than ever to have Mandos story end guns blazing... but I also think there's charm in leaving the protagonist alive, so you can imagine more adventures.

Originally, the Indiana Jones trilogy ends with Indiana alive and young, leaving fans fulfilled and eager to imagine more adventures at home for years to come.

Same with Star Wars, we all imagined for DECADES what Luke got up to after Return of the Jedi. That's because when the story ended, they left it at a place for us to imagine what came next.

I understand why they might eventually kill Mando. I just hope they don't. Never kill him off, so we are left to imagine fun adventures.

@TheVandalore - your indy and SW examples made me remember some more, and my gripe with the sequels fest that's Hollywood today came back full force.

At least Back to the Future stays untarnished so far.

@TheVandalore - Mando is not going to die off. i dont get why everyone is so eager to kill off characters these days. there is thirty years of history they can work with for future stories. 30 years in universe time equals unlimited real life time to fill in gaps of that history with books, games, shows movies years of potential stories to fill in. gonna be exciting.
