OBI-WAN KENOBI Star Hayden Christensen On Stepping Away From Acting And Why He's Returning As Darth Vader

Hayden Christensen has opened up on stepping away from Star Wars and Hollywood, revealing why he's returning as Darth Vader now and how he was enlisted to play the Sith Lord again in Obi-Wan Kenobi...

While the Star Wars prequels get an easier time of it these days (likely due to how divisive the sequels were), there was a time when they frequently earned the wrath of fans. Disappointed with how the movies turned out, the Star Wars community was not shy with their criticisms, and that clearly hit actor Hayden Christensen hard based on comments made to EW (via SFFGazette.com).

Playing Anakin Skywalker in Attack of the Clones and Revenge of the Sith, it was down to the then relative newcomer to take the Jedi Padawan and transform him into Darth Vader. "When the films came out and the critics were very critical, of course that was a difficult thing - because you care so much about this thing that you've invested so much of yourself into," Christensen recalls.

Describing the experience as "challenging," he adds that it led to him walking away from the Star Wars franchise and Hollywood. Buying a farm in the Canadian countryside, Christensen says he "really took a liking to that whole environment and lifestyle and got a bunch of animals and was looking after sheep and pigs and chickens for a little while."

Now, Christensen is set to reprise the role of Anakin and Vader in Obi-Wan Kenobi, but with the Sith Lord making his presence felt in 2016's Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, is this the first time he was asked to suit up again? Lucasfilm President Kathleen Kennedy says he was never considered because "that was just such a specific action sequence," while the actor adds, "I wasn't a part of any of those conversations about Rogue One. But I loved what they did with it. The character predates me, and it's always been a collective effort in a lot of ways. I thought it was brilliant."

As for why this Disney+ series pulled him back into this Galaxy Far, Far Away, Christensen credits Obi-Wan Kenobi director Deborah Chow. "[She] came up and we spent the day chatting," he remembers. "She told me a little bit about the project and her vision for it, and I just thought that it sounded wonderful. I was very excited to come back."

With that, the stage has been set for a long-overdue Obi-Wan vs. Darth Vader rematch...

Never knew he left. Doesn't care he returned.

@Dope21 - Basically he left because he became a farmer. He's returning because owning livestock is expensive.

Can't imagine how it must feel to be on the receiving end of so much hate, even in the mid-2000's version of the internet.

I'm glad that he's getting another shot at this, I just hope it pays off.

@TheAstoundingMan - couldn't have been as bad as Jake Lloyd got

@dracula - Or the actor playing Jar Jar. Was tempted to mention a certain director here as well.

@dracula - Jake Lloyd is a sad story. He absolutely did get bad press, but he also got made fun of and harassed in school because of that role.

He was later arrested for reckless driving, driving without a license, and resisting arrest. Then he assaulted his own mother physically and verbally. Then he was diagnosed over with paranoid schizophrenia.

One has to wonder how much of all of that was caused by him being thrust into this role at such a young age and then getting all the hate from everyone afterward.

@ElricReturns - Yup. What happened to Kelly Marie Tran was pretty bad too because her decreased screen time in the 3rd movie made it look like Disney listened and agreed to all the vitriol she got online.

@Vanillain - wasn't it because of Carrie fisher's death that Kelly's role was lessen

@TheAstoundingMan - Agreed, but I don't know that it's much better now. I'm glad he's coming back. It's probably cathartic for him in a lot of ways now.

Clone Wars made the prequels better. The Kathleen Kennedy trilogy helped even more.

Hopefully his skills have improved and we get something less like prequel anakin and more like clone wars anakin.

Really only time in the prequels he got to truly shine was as evil anakin

The transition was pretty sudden and there isnt much in common between evil anakin and darth vader, but he did great with the evil material even if it doesnt match up that well with what came before

@Waddles - You're right. I'm a fan of Lucas, but his directing style in that era left a lot to be desired. Filling the universe with lore is where Lucas shined, but when it comes to directing his actors, relying on their instincts is not something he's particularly strong at. This is according to his actors, as well as the man himself. "Faster and more intense" is usually the joke. He would often times direct behind his monitor envisioning the finished visual product rather than focus on the real meat of any story, the performance. Hayden is not the best actor in the world, but he's not a bad one either. He was following George's lead. I can imagine acting mostly against a green backdrop, and given the same wooden dialogue (Sir Alec Guinness referred to as "ropey" for the OT, and Hamil said "No one talks like this George") could be hard for any actor.

I just think Hayden got a lot of undeserved hate.

@DarthOmega @dracula @Waddles

You can see this clearly in the prequels' extras. He would say exactly how the actors should talk, move, etc.

It was pretty bad and those terrible Anakin/Padme scenes are pretty much justified from the actors' pov.

@DarthOmega - Exactly. Sometimes you're only as good as the direction you're given or how creative the process is allowed to be.

You know Jake Lloyd was Orson Scott Card's pick to play Ender Wiggin, thought he had a lot of potential and would do well with proper direction.

movie took too long to happen so he aged out

@Stinkor1 - I don’t care what anyone says: Lucas’ direction was not the best (and that’s putting it lightly) but Hayden’s acting in this scene is honestly too damn good and he never got credit for it. Crying isn’t a sign of great acting, but the way he’s looking away with his eyes shows the absolute self-loathing and disgust he has with himself - in that moment and moving forward. Which was always a part of Vader’s character. This scene to me showed he absolutely understood and took serious the role he was playing but was held back by George.

Always thought he never got a fair shake and it's nice to see that time has been kind to the prequels and his portrayal as Anakin. Hayden coming back is what I'm most anticipating for the Kenobi show.

I thought Hayden dramatically improved from Episode 2 to 3. I’m excited to see him get new direction and to see what he can do now. For anyone that doubts his acting ability, you should watch Shattered Glass.

Hayden can act. George just made him stick to a script with terrible dialogue that he wrote. Looking forward to him returning. His haters should sit down.

This is just entertainment. I get that. But this story is far too important to the whole of Star Wars to treat like the rest of Disney+ shows. You know the formula... A few banger episodes and tons of filler. Let's give these two the story they deserve. I'm so nervous, yet so excited to see this series. Let's GOOOO!!!

I heard a rumor Spielberg helped craft EP.3 a considerable amount this would conflict with him saying he "would never direct Star wars" and that was "George's thing"

I always thought EP 3 was a vision realized

Am I the only one upset at how bad the live action Inquisitors look? They look like a bunch of cosplayers. Very low budget looking and make the Rebels ones look godly in comparison.
