Smallville star Tom Welling looks set to go from Superman to Supernatural after landing a key role in The Winchesters. His involvement in the spinoff series was made official (via FearHQ.com) during this past weekend's New York Comic Con by executive producer Jensen Ackles (The Boys). That prompted Welling to hit the stage, much to the delight of those in attendance.

"This is all Jensen's fault. I lost a bet," Welling joked before it was confirmed that he will play Samuel Campbell, Sam and Dean Winchester's maternal grandfather. The character, who is obviously Mary Cambell's father, was previously played by Mitch Pileggi across eight episodes of Supernatural

During the panel, Ackles - who has played Batman in the DC Animated Universe - turned to Mary actress Meg Donnelly and had fun pointing out, "Your father is Superman."

This marks a reunion of sorts for Ackles and Welling after they previously shared the screen in Smallville. The former appeared in the show's fourth season during the mid-2000s, playing Jason Teague, Lana Lang's boyfriend at the time. He left after just one season when he landed the role of Dean Winchester in Supernatural

After fans were treated to an early screening of The Winchesters, a Q&A took place that saw one of them wonder if we might see some familiar faces appear in the Supernatural prequel. Might Mark Sheppard's Crowley and Misha Collin's Castiel make their presence felt? "I guarantee you will see more familiar faces," Ackles teased, saying it's vital viewers support the show so it's around for the long haul.

Before Sam and Dean, there were their parents, John and Mary. Told from the perspective of narrator Dean Winchester (Ackles), The Winchesters is described as "the epic, untold love story" of how John Winchester (Drake Rodger) met Mary Campbell (Meg Donnelly) and put it all on the line to not only save their love, but the entire world.

The Winchesters premieres on The CW on October 11, while Welling will make his first appearance in the seventh episode.

Tom Welling in Supernatural would have excited me, 8 or 9 seasons before the show ended. It definitely doesn’t interest me in a spin off

Welling had a real chance to be a huge star. But he stuck around on Smallville too long and gained about 30 lbs after Smallville season 3. When he finally left he was pushing 33 and was old news. Other CW stars have suffered similar fates but Welling was the one who had the best chance to make it to A-list territory.

@jratz - He was in fair shape from season 4 to the end. Season 3 episode 1 he was in great shape. A year later during Aqua, he had gained a lot of weight. There were even a few episodes later that had him shirtless but avoided showing his midsection. The weight gain changed his face too.

@Dabs - Welling had a big fanbase among young women until he started losing his appeal by getting paunchy. He didn't do social media or cons or even talk shows when he could have. He failed to capitalize on his opportunity.

He did a con appearance and a couple talk shows when Smallville was ending but he had missed his window. He does cons now and podcasts. But it's too late.

Not that hard to understand but somehow, it's rocket science to you.

@jratz - In the season 2 premiere of Smallville, his female fans went mad over his shirtless scenes. In season 4, Welling gained weight and his female fans weren't too happy with his body in season 5, episode 4 when he looked pudgy with no muscle tone and was holding in his fat gut beside a shirtless, buffed and cut Alan Ritchson. It also hurt him and later his bank account when he married and how he wouldn't try to connect with fans of Smallville.

Those things happened and they had an effect on his career and how studios looked at him. Once he lost his appeal to most of his fanbase, he was no longer bankable.

Being successful in Hollywood is not easy when your biggest asset is youth and looks. It's a full time job and full time competition and Welling was not dedicated to it. And he later lost out on some roles to Pattinson and Chris Hemsworth. Now he couldn't even get a small role in their movies.

You make it sounds like he lost out ..... Welling has never expressed much of an interest in interviews or similar in being a big TV/movie star. If anything, he was more excited to get behind the camera hence why he moved into an exec producer role in Smallville (and directed) and then also did production on Hellcats and his recent Professionals show. He seemed pretty exhausted by end of Smallville's run and happy to take some time off.
