GOTHAM KNIGHTS, THE WINCHESTERS, WALKER: INDEPENDENCE Picked Up To Series At The CW; NAOMI Canceled

While it seems like every DC show has been receiving the ax lately, The CW has ordered Gotham Knights, its Supernatural prequel The Winchesters, and a Walker prequel Walker: Independence to series.

It's a good news, bad news kind of day at The CW.

Starting on the bright side, the network has issued series orders for a new DC series Gotham Knights (which is not a spinoff to the now-canceled Batwoman), a Supernatural prequel series The Winchesters, and a Walker prequel series Walker: Independence

These were the only three pilots the network ordered this season and it looks like all three were impressive enough to warrant series orders.

In a fun bit of connective tissue, all three new shows have direct ties to The CW's most successful drama series Supernatural, as Jensen Ackles (Dean Winchester) is executive producing and providing narration for The Winchesters, Jared Padalecki (Sam Winchester) is executive producing Walker: Independence while starring on the flagship series, and Misha Collins (Castiel) is starring on Gotham Knights as Harvey Dent.

On the not-so-bright side of things, The CW canceled seven shows today, including Naomi, LegaciesCharmed, Dynasty, Roswell New Mexico, In the Darkand The 4400. No word on Stargirl, but with its third season set to launch this summer, its fate will likely be determined sometime later in the year.

Former THR editor and Puck founder Matthew Belloni added some more context on the cancelations in his latest newsletter, which may spell doom for the future of DC content on the network. He says, "Today’s cancellation of seven series is the beginning of the end, I’m afraid. The Warner-CBS joint venture is being sold to Nexstar, which will likely turn it into a broadcast version of NewsNation and milk it for carriage fees and political ads. Not much room for scripted shows there."

Here are the synopses for all three shows:

Gotham Knights is set "In the wake of Bruce Wayne's murder, his rebellious adopted son forges an unlikely alliance with the children of Batman's enemies when they are all framed for killing the Caped Crusader. And as the city's most wanted criminals, this renegade band of misfits must fight to clear their names. But in a Gotham with no Dark Knight to protect it, the city descends into the most dangerous it's ever been. However, hope comes from the most unexpected of places as this team of mismatched fugitives will become its next generation of saviors known as the Gotham Knights." Chad Fiveash, James Stoteraux, Greg Berlanti, Sarah Schechter, David Madden and director Danny Cannon executive produce for Warner Bros. Television with Natalie Abrams as a co-executive producer. Anna Lore, Fallon Smythe, Misha Collins, Navia Robinson, Olivia Rose Keegan, Oscar Morgan, Rahart Adams and Tyler DiChiara star.

"Walker" prequel "Independence" is "set in the late 1800s. It follows Abby Walker (Katherine McNamara), an affluent Bostonian whose husband is murdered before her eyes while on their journey out West. On her quest for revenge, Abby crosses paths with Hoyt Rawlins (Matt Barr), a lovable rogue in search of purpose. Abby and Hoyt’s journey takes them to Independence, Texas, where they encounter diverse, eclectic residents running from their own troubled pasts and chasing their dreams, all while becoming agents of change themselves in the small town." Seamus Kevin Fahey, Jared Padalecki, Anna Fricke, Dan Lin, Lindsey Liberatore and director Larry Teng executive produce for CBS Studios. Also starring are Gabriela Quezada, Greg Hovanessian, Justin Johnson Cortez, Katie Findlay and Lawrence Kao.

The "Supernatural" prequel "The Winchesters" is "the epic, untold love story of how John (Drake Rodger) met Mary (Meg Donnelly) and how they put it all on the line to not only save their love, but the entire world." Robbie Thompson, Jensen Ackles, Danneel Ackles and director Glen Winter are the executive producers for Warner Bros. Television and CBS Studios. Bianca Kajlich, Demetria McKinney, Jojo Fleites and Nida Khurshid also star while Jensen Ackles narrates as Dean Winchester.

Overall I liked Naomi as whole. I haven't watched the finale yet, so I hope it finishes the story they've been telling and doesn't leave an open ended story.

I'm a little confused by Gotham Knights considering they cancelled Batwoman and this is from the writers of Batwoman. I'll give a chance as I do all DC shows, but we'll see.

@batmbl - luckily its not from the showrunner of batwoman, so there could be hope

@dracula - I hope that is the case as the concept sounds like it could be good. If it's Superman & Lois quality in production and at least close in storytelling I'll be happy with what they put out.

@batmbl - That finale of Naomi was pretty damn good with a unexpected twist I didn't see coming and really set up what could have been a interesting second season. That one I will miss. The others cancelled not so much.

@Mugens - Not gonna watch Naomi, but what was the twist / cliffhanger?

I've read her comics, so I wonder if they took it from Bendis, or if it was a new thing created for the show.

@UXASIS - It was a lot of people you thought were good, really turned out not to be, those you thought were problematic turned out to be good, and a lot of in between as well which would have been explored if it had gotten a second season. The final two to five minutes were pretty sweet actually.

@Mugens

Sounds pretty cool.

But still not gonna watch, I have better shows in my mind.

'We Own This City' with Jon Bernthal and 'The Offer' look pretty good.

I thought it was a hard thing to get cancelled at CW, yet they're cleaning house and not picking up much. Probably back to the days of syndicated COPS. It does the same ratings as most of their shows.

They gotta renege and cancel Gotham Knights like mid season right?

Saw two episodes of Naomi before dropping it.

Gotham Knights better have a great trailer and deliver in the actual episodes. Was already burned on Titans and Batwoman for Batmanless Batman shows. Gave Titans two seasons and gave Batwoman a season and a half. Not wasting my time if it doesnt impress in the first three episodes.

Only watched Supernatural for a brief time at the end of season 3 (remember a prison episode, groundhog day episode , western episode and dean dying episode) caught an occasional episode after maybe 5 at most, never something i felt the need to watch

Cool that two things predicted in supernatural happened but i have no interest in a reboot a chuck norris show

@dracula - I used to watch ALL superhero shows, but Cw really made me realise, I should watch only things I enjoy and not because it comes from Dc Comics.

Now I watch only Superman and Stargirl and I feel pretty good.

Gotham Knights sounds like it has awesome characters (Bluebird, Cassandra Cain, other Robins etc.) so I really hope it will be at least slightly similiar to Superman or Arrow (s1 & s2) quality-wise.

Doesn't matter it is Batman-less if the Robins can be charismatic characters. Just don't bring ANYONE from Batwoman (Spoiler and Cluemaster were in season 1 I think)

@UXASIS - yeah Superman and Lois made me realize that. It's so much better, it made the shit of the other shows more obvious and one by one I dropped them. Right now only watching Superman and Lois, Star Girl, Young Justice, Harley Quinn and Doom Patrol.

yeah Gotham knights has some cool characters, but so did Batwoman and its from people who worked on batwoman, so im not getting my hopes up. Hopefully its a surprise.

Fine with it being Batman-less but really they don't have a good track record of shows focused on other batfamily members. Birds Of Prey, Batwoman, Titans is technically its own property but its more like a Nightwing show

UXASIS - 5/13/2022, 5:36 PM
@dracula - I agree.

I just have to add that Titans is from HBO Max (Dc Universe) rather than Cw.

I'd say it is not that great, but still miles better, than Cw shows (except Superman).

I'm glad that Gotham Knights and The Winchesters got picked up. I think that if Gotham Knights is more like Superman & Lois and less like Batwoman it will do fine. The Arrowverse was fun when it was in its prime but it's time to move on. Give The Flash a farewell season and then have everything else be its own thing. Stargirl has been great too and I hope we get another season.

I have high hopes for The Winchesters, Supernatural was a great show and it seems only natural that there should be some type of continuation. I think that it will be at its best if it is more comparable in tone to Supernatural's earlier seasons instead its later installments. That being said, I really enjoyed the setup they did for Wayward Sisters and it's too bad the idea never went to series.

I was just getting into Naomi, well at least Ava made her mark on DC after not being able to make New God's Movie!

I'm praying Gotham Knights' tone and style are closer to Superman & Lois. That should be the standard at this point.
Spock0Clock
Spock0Clock - 5/13/2022, 12:34 AM
@Himura - I'm not sure how it could be, given the description. S&L can play a bit sappy and almost like a Smallville sequel (in a good way). The nuclear family aspect is sort of what sets it apart from all of the other "found family" superhero groups that most CW shows have, and Gotham Knights sounds like it's more like that. At least, if it goes on long enough for the ensemble to gel.

They could go the other direction with it, though. Really lean into the isolation and disillusionment of these second-generation kids. As a premise, it has potential. I know some of my favorite shows emphasize the conflict within the group for a long time before they allow themselves to go sappy.

Never watched Naomi. Have almost no interest in Gotham Knights. But I love Stargirl, Superman and Lois, and The Flash.
Spock0Clock
Spock0Clock - 5/13/2022, 12:42 AM
At this point, which of these shows are still meaningfully connected to the original Arrow show? Is it just Flash and Superman & Lois? (And S&L felt like it's an asterisk because of how little that connection mattered.)

Poor Naomi...

Gotham Knights will be ass, The Winchesters is completely unnecessary after a bloated 15 season series, and don't know why Walker reboot needs a prequel but 'kay.

Woke garbage doesn't make good programming.

They will keep on making woke garbage.

So was Naomi worth a try? Or should I just leave it knowing it's cancelled anyway?

As for Gotham Knights, I kinda look forward to it because of the characters, but I don't expect that to have a long run either.
Mugens
Mugens - 5/13/2022, 2:36 PM
@bkmeijer1 - Naomi was better than I thought it would be although it did slump along a bit the first half of the season. The second half it picked up and I really liked the finale. But hard to get invested in something that you know has already ben cancelled. Potential was definitely there. Could have easily seen a Superman crossover as well as the character was name dropped all through the series for various reasons. At least we got a little Thanagarian representation.

bkmeijer1 - 5/13/2022, 6:05 PM
@Mugens - okay gotcha. The initial reviews and talk surrounding the first few episodes wasn't all that great, so I wasn't sure about watching. Good to know it picked itself up later on
