VENOM Devours Another $35.7 Million In Its Second Frame; Storms Past $378 Million Worldwide
Sony Pictures' Venom continues to exceed expectations, collecting $35.7 million in its second weekend and keeping its spot atop the worldwide box office where it's brought in over $378 million total.
Sony Pictures' Venom may not have scored with critics, but thanks to an incredibly warm reception from fans worldwide, the Ruben Fleischer-directed superhero feature is a bonafide blockbuster and has scored its second straight week atop the domestic box office with a strong $35.7 million.
Internationally, the Tom Hardy-starrer, which reportedly cost just over $100 million to make, collected another $65.7 million, which brings its worldwide cume to a healthy $378.1 million ($142.8M domestic; $235.3M foreign), making it the sixteenth-highest grossing film of the year just twelve days into its release cycle. It's actually performing very similarly to Hugh Jackman's X-Men swan song, Logan ($619.0M), so a potential finish in the $500 million to $600 million range doesn't seem out of the realm of possibility, granted, of course, it receives a China release date.
Despite many pundits predicting a significant drop, Venom only dipped 55.5% in its second frame, which is identical to both Avengers: Infinity War (-55.5%) and Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 (-55.5%) and is actually a better hold than a number of the more popular superhero movies in recent memory, including Spider-Man: Homecoming (-62.2%), Ant-Man and the Wasp (-61.6%), Captain America: Civil War (-59.5%) and Deadpool 2 (-57.1%).
The film is also performing better than Warner Bros.' Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice (-69.1%) and Suicide Squad (-67.4%), both of which received a similar negative response from critics, although unlike Venom, those two films weren't exactly embraced by audiences.
As for the rest of the domestic box office, Bradley Cooper's critically acclaimed A Star Is Born finished second yet again with $28 million, bringing its worldwide cume to $135.3 million ($94.1M domestic; $41.2M foreign). Universal's First Man debuted in third with a slightly underwhelming $16.5 million ($25.1M worldwide), Sony's Goosebumps 2: Haunted Halloween debuted in fourth with $16.2 million ($19.9M worldwide), and 20th Century Fox's Bad Times at the El Royale debuted in seventh with a disappointing $7.2 million ($11.2M worldwide).
In other news, it appears that Tom Cruise's latest action blockbuster, Mission: Impossible - Fallout, has reached the end of its theatrical run with a colossal $790.6 million ($220.1M domestic; $570.4M foreign). Meanwhile, Shane Black's The Predator has topped $125.7 million worldwide ($50.7M domestic; $75.0M foreign) and while that's an undoubtedly disappointing turnout, it has yet-to-open in China (Oct. 26), which is where it could find a second life.
