VENOM Devours Another $35.7 Million In Its Second Frame; Storms Past $378 Million Worldwide

Sony Pictures' Venom continues to exceed expectations, collecting $35.7 million in its second weekend and keeping its spot atop the worldwide box office where it's brought in over $378 million total.

Sony Pictures' Venom may not have scored with critics, but thanks to an incredibly warm reception from fans worldwide, the Ruben Fleischer-directed superhero feature is a bonafide blockbuster and has scored its second straight week atop the domestic box office with a strong $35.7 million.

Internationally, the Tom Hardy-
starrer, which reportedly cost just over $100 million to make, collected another $65.7 million, which brings its worldwide cume to a healthy $378.1 million ($142.8M domestic; $235.3M foreign), making it the sixteenth-highest grossing film of the year just twelve days into its release cycle. It's actually performing very similarly to Hugh Jackman's X-Men swan song, Logan ($619.0M), so a potential finish in the $500 million to $600 million range doesn't seem out of the realm of possibility, granted, of course, it receives a China release date.

Despite many pundits predicting a significant drop, Venom only dipped 55.5% in its second frame, which is identical to both Avengers: Infinity War (-55.5%) and Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 (-55.5%) and is actually a better hold than a number of the more popular superhero movies in recent memory, including Spider-Man: Homecoming (-62.2%), Ant-Man and the Wasp (-61.6%), Captain America: Civil War (-59.5%) and Deadpool 2 (-57.1%).

The film is also performing better than Warner Bros.' Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice (-69.1%) and Suicide Squad (-67.4%), both of which received a similar negative response from critics, although unlike Venom, those two films weren't exactly embraced by audiences.

As for the rest of the domestic box office, Bradley Cooper's critically acclaimed A Star Is Born finished second yet again with $28 million, bringing its worldwide cume to $135.3 million ($94.1M domestic; $41.2M foreign). Universal's First Man debuted in third with a slightly underwhelming $16.5 million ($25.1M worldwide), Sony's Goosebumps 2: Haunted Halloween debuted in fourth with $16.2 million ($19.9M worldwide), and 20th Century Fox's Bad Times at the El Royale debuted in seventh with a disappointing $7.2 million ($11.2M worldwide).

In other news, it appears that Tom Cruise's latest action blockbuster, Mission: Impossible - Fallout, has reached the end of its theatrical run with a colossal $790.6 million ($220.1M domestic; $570.4M foreign). Meanwhile, Shane Black's The Predator has topped $125.7 million worldwide ($50.7M domestic; $75.0M foreign) and while that's an undoubtedly disappointing turnout, it has yet-to-open in China (Oct. 26), which is where it could find a second life.

One of Marvel's most enigmatic, complex and badass characters comes to the big screen, starring Academy Award® nominated actor Tom Hardy as the lethal protector Venom.

Venom features:
Director: Ruben Fleischer
Tom Hardy as Eddie Brock/Venom
Michelle Williams as Anne Weying
Riz Ahmed as Carlton Drake/Riot
Scott Haze as Roland Treece
Reid Scott as Dr. Dan Lewis
Jenny Slate as Dr. Dora Skirth
Melora Walters as Maria
Chris O'Hara as John Jameson
Woody Harrelson as Cletus Kasady

I had fun with the movie, so I'm cool with that. There were some glaring issues but never failed to entertain. Maybe if it proves lucrative, kevin feige might be cool with a crossover, given that Marvel Studios has creative control of course.

@Urubrodi - I'd rather have Tom Hardy as Wolverine, if he joined the MCU.

I expected a bigger opening from First Man tbh. Surprised it's so low. Glad to see that amazing hold for A Star is Born though.
Bad Times would have made much more with a little more promotion and a late Summer release...

Anyway, five days left.

@Pantherpool - The first 2 hours was very slow the only good part of this movie was the last 20 minutes. 2 Stars out of 5 Stars for me.

It was a terrible movie that was kind of fun. I didn’t regret seeing it, and I would be interested in a sequel for sure, but the implications this success brings for comic book movie blockbusters, and for the future of Sony Marvel films is sad

@BlackBeltJones - I'm going to support the shit out of this movie. Drew has written probably some of the best and most unique episodes of Buffy ever. He's a brilliant writer, and I'm glad he's finally getting out of Joss' shadow. Give this poor man his God damn comic book movie, dude probably won't get to do X-Force after all with the deal closing sooner than expected. I don't think he's even started on the script.

@blitzburgh - I never said they showed it. It was still funny as [frick] in the trailers.

I thought the movie was great.

Also, off topic last yesterdays movie was Jeepers Creepers 1. Also i am aware that the director is an ACTUAL pediephile/molester but it doesnt mean im gonna change my opinion of the film itself unlike most people in regards to OTHER movies. In all seriousnedd though the first two Jeepera Creepers films are pretty solid. That third one though is atrocious to me. If ya disagree fewl free to comment and explain and we can open up a dialogue before we start calling eachother "fanboys".

I hope they learn from their mistakes in the sequel, of course it'll probably make more no matter what. Aye carumba, seeing First Man tomorrow and Bad Times sometime this week before Halloween comes out lol

The release date and the back and forth humor between Eddie Brock and the Venom Symbiote, were home runs by Sony. Easy money.💰

Im not surprised anymore. Bad movies like Suicide Squad,Twilight Batman vs Superman and Transformers made more money than they deserved. Venom is the same.

@Ryguy88 - blade runner 2049 while amazing was a horrible financial decision never make a big budget sequel to a movie that could barely pass a 28m budget
