JUSTICE LEAGUE Star Henry Cavill Seemingly Teases Role In Upcoming MASS EFFECT Movie Or TV Show

Henry Cavill is a huge gaming fan, and while he's currently busy playing Geralt of Rivia in The Witcher, it seems he could be involved with something Mass Effect related as well. Read on for details...

If you follow Henry Cavill on social media, you'll know that the actor is a big gamer (he even builds his own gaming PCs). That makes The Witcher something of a dream project for the Justice League star, but could he have another video game adaptation on the way?

While sitting in the makeup chair on the set of the Netflix series, Cavill shared a tease of an upcoming project on Instagram, saying, "Secret project? Or just a handful of paper with random words on it...Guess you'll have to wait and see. Happy hump day all."

It didn't take long for internet sleuths to do some digging, and they've made out words like "Cerberus", "Reaper", "Geth," and "Tali'Zorah" on the blurry page below. That may sound like a bunch of gibberish, but if you've played Mass Effect, you'll know that those words are all related to the hit video game series. Fans are desperate for a live-action adaptation, so could it finally be happening?

Well, it's certainly looking likely, and Cavill would be perfect for the role of Commander Shepard.

The first Mass Effect game saw Shepard set out to save the galaxy from a race of powerful mechanical beings known as the Reapers. It won't be an easy property to adapt, but there's a huge amount of potential there, and Cavill taking on the lead role would bring a lot of eyes to such a project.

We'll keep you updated.

video game movies...according to Rotten Tomatoes!

10. Resident Evil: The Final Chapter

REFC

Score: 37%

Rotten or Fresh? Rotten

Critics Consensus: Resident Evil: The Final Chapter may prove mind-numbingly chaotic for the unconverted, but for fans of the venerable franchise, it offers a fittingly kinetic conclusion to its violent post-apocalyptic saga.

The Resident Evil movies weren't very good, and didn't exactly stick to the games. However, this blockbuster approach to the series did resonate with some fans, and the series was a financial success. None of them were well-reviewed, but the final instalment of the Milla Jovovich era was surprising received better than its predecessors. Perhaps critics were just glad to see it finally end?

9. Prince Of Persia: The Sands Of Time

POP

Score: 37%

Rotten or Fresh? Rotten

Critics Consensus: It doesn't offer much in the way of substance, but Prince of Persia is a suitably entertaining swashbuckler -- and a substantial improvement over most video game adaptations.

C'mon, Disney's take on Prince of Persia wasn't that bad, was it? Whitewashing wasn't as problematic in 2010 as it is today (it should have been, obviously), but that's wasn't really an issue for most critics, anyway. For them, the story just didn't work, but that score still doesn't seem fair. It wasn't difficult to have fun with this adventure, and there are worse video game adaptations you could watch.

8. The Angry Birds Movie

REFC3

Score: 43%

Rotten or Fresh? Rotten

Critics Consensus: The Angry Birds Movie is substantially more entertaining than any film adapted from an app has any right to be -- which may or may not be much of an endorsement.

Who could have guessed that a mobile game we all played on the toilet could make for a half-decent animated flick? We're not sure what critics were expecting from this one, especially as it was quite clearly aimed at kids, but it failed to serve as much more than a pretty standard feature-length cartoon. It certainly didn't have much to say, but it was based on app, so perhaps that's okay on this occasion?

7. Final Fantasy: The Spirits Within

REFC33

Score: 44%

Rotten or Fresh? Rotten

Critics Consensus: The movie raises the bar for computer animated movies, but the story is dull and emotionally removed.

This has been mostly forgotten, but at the time, the visuals it delivered were pretty groundbreaking. It never seemed to get much credit for that, and while the story admittedly didn't soar, it was relatively entertaining. An argument could be made that this was really a movie just for Final Fantasy fans, but it is a shame a big screen adaptation of the games has never followed this early offering.

6. Mortal Kombat

REFC333

Score: 48%

Rotten or Fresh? Rotten

Critics Consensus: Despite an effective otherwordly atmosphere and appropriately cheesy visuals, Mortal Kombat suffers from its poorly constructed plot, laughable dialogue, and subpar acting.

A new Mortal Kombat movie currently has everyone talking, but don't forget this 1995 "classic." Of course, it's more a cult-favourite than anything else, but despite the negatives listed above, those are easy enough to forgive. It's good fun, and does its best to pay homage to the games with a limited budget and technology. If you've played them, then give it a chance (with tempered expectations).

5. Rampage

REFC333

Score: 52%

Rotten or Fresh? Rotten

Critics Consensus: Rampage isn't as fun as its source material, but the movie's sheer button-mashing abandon might satisfy audiences in the mood for a brainless blockbuster.

For the most part, Dwayne Johnson can do no wrong, but his movies don't always earn the most positive reviews. Attempting to adapt this classic arcade/console game was an ambitious move, but as those are light on story, it was up to Rampage to fill in the gapes. It did so with limited success, and while the action and visuals were a blast, there really wasn't much more to it than that, unfortunately.

4. Tomb Raider

REFC3331

Score: 51%

Rotten or Fresh? Rotten

Critics Consensus: Tomb Raider reboots the franchise with a more grounded approach and a star who's clearly more than up to the task -- neither of which are well served by an uninspired origin story.

The recent Tomb Raider games have attempted to put a grounded spin on Lara Croft's origin story, and this movie went down a similar route. Unfortunately, like the series it's based on, that didn't prove to be particularly interesting. On the plus side, Alicia Vikander was great in the role, and this was still miles ahead of other recent video game adaptations like Doom, Warcraft, and Assassin's Creed.

3. Sonic The Hedgehog

REFC33313

Score: 63%

Rotten or Fresh? Fresh

Critics Consensus: Fittingly fleet and frequently fun, Sonic the Hedgehog is a video game-inspired adventure the whole family can enjoy -- and a fine excuse for Jim Carrey to tap into the manic energy that launched his career.

When the first trailer for Sonic the Hedgehog was released, fans were horrified to see that the title character has been redesigned. His creepy new look went viral, and Paramount smartly decided to delay the movie in order to get that right. As a result, when it was released, no one commented on Sonic's look, and instead focused on Jim Carrey's memorable performance and this genuinely fun live-action blockbuster.

2. Detective Pikachu

REFC333132

Score: 68%

Rotten or Fresh? Fresh

Critics Consensus: Pokémon Detective Pikachu may not take its wonderfully bizarre premise as far as it could have, but this offbeat adaptation should catch most -- if not all -- of the franchise's fans.

There was a huge amount of excitement surrounding Legendary's plans for a live-action Pokémon movie, but everyone's anticipation fell when it was revealed to be...Detective Pikachu. Why not tell the story of Ash Ketchum or another trainer rather than a talking Pikachu? We still don't have the answer to that question, but this movie was awesome, and did a wonderful job of bringing the Pokémon world to life.

1. The Angry Birds Movie 2

REFC33313

Score: 73%

Rotten or Fresh? Fresh

Critics Consensus: Like its non-aerodynamic title characters, The Angry Birds Movie 2 takes improbable yet delightfully entertaining flight, landing humorous hits along the way.

Well, who imagined this being at the top of the list? It's not "Certified Fresh," but it's the closest movie here to reaching that accolade. Upping the laughs and improving the story, The Angry Birds Movie 2 made for entertaining viewing, and the voice cast was clearly enjoying themselves. This didn't feel like a shameless cash grab (the first one did), and you might be surprised by just how much you enjoy this one!

Cavil has the Witcher and other movie

Snyder has hi zombie franchise and king arthur

Fisher isn't working there while Hamada is there

They have a new Batman franchise

and people still think a Justice League sequel has a chance of happening (Even if it does have a slim possibility, obviously wont be anytime soon)

@dracula - if Cavill doesn't return, I kinda hope they start with a new Superman in The Batman universe

A JL (JLI) reboot could happen, though not with Snyder.

@bkmeijer - Superman & lois is great, saw the premiere and it feels more like a movie rather than your generic weekly CW show so I liked it alot. TBH it makes no sense for Cavil to return anymore, we are so passed his origins and berlanti is already tackling the adulthood of Superman so there's no room for "new" on the big screen anymore unless they Spiderman Homecoming him and make him a whiny teenager that Wonder Woman has to teach.

Cavil could have been a great Superman. He has done well in other roles.

I'm sure the Gamer in Cavill was intrigued, looking forward to see his next few Movie choices

@SimplyAz - considering he is a gamer, he'd probably be annoyed this guy just called the Witcher a video game adaptation.

Lol, I missed that. But then so typical of the guy

@SimplyAz - kinda just think it's general American ignorance really. I'm encountering a lot of people calling this show the best video game adaptation. Could you imagine saying this about lotr?

@Origame -

Especially when the TV show said it's adapting the books and not the games.

Cavill as Shepard is actually pretty good casting. He has the same features as the base male model and could certainly portray the guy perfectly.

However I'd be more of a fan of a tale not adapting a previously told story but something new in the universe. It's vast and perfectly lends itself to storytelling.
Like the Assassin's Creed film did (only in good)
Origame
Origame - 2/25/2021, 6:53 AM
@Blergh - exactly. Assassins creed had the right premise for other video game adaptations to follow, a new story in the games world. The problem was just execution.
Blergh
Blergh - 2/25/2021, 7:03 AM
@Origame - totally, the writers just got too tangled up with the present day arc. One they should have cut all together.
AC is dependent on it's past storytelling not the other way around
Origame
Origame - 2/25/2021, 7:44 AM
@Blergh - I just think it's too much for a movie. A show would've done much better.

A Mass Effect tv show could be cool. I'm curious who would bring it out, would Netflix want Henry to work on this show too or I could see Amazon wanting Henry Cavill to play as Commander Shepard. So there is a lot of potential for a Mass Effect tv show and hopefully if it happens, a studio will spend the money it would need to be successful.

Cavill is a gamer by heart. He is won't refuse easily these video game roles. Good for him.

A little while ago I started thinking about Mass Effect a lot and right after that they announced a new game, a remastered trilogy, and now this is happening. Maybe I should use my magic on some other franchises...

They are working on a new Mass Effect game and all four previous games had couple of on-camera actors voicing minor characters. Maybe it's something like that.

bkmeijer2 - 2/25/2021, 2:58 AM
I only played Andromeda (and yes, I liked it) and do wanna see more of this universe. I don't mind if its a new game or a tv show. And it's an IP I can actually see Cavill appear in.
FinnishDude
FinnishDude - 2/25/2021, 3:20 AM
@bkmeijer - Pick up the remaster of the trilogy once it comes out. You could also try to track down the direct-to-dvd animated movie called Paragon Lost, which had wonky animation, but told a decent story.
Spock0Clock
Spock0Clock - 2/25/2021, 3:23 AM
@bkmeijer - If the remaster of the original trilogy is any good, I recommend it. The first two games were astoundingly well written games (for their time), and the second in particular allows for some true consequences of your decisions (if you don't follow some guide about how to get the best ending).

My full playthrough of the series genuinely left me feeling for my main character's journey. Well, up until the last twenty minutes or so, but apparently some DLC came out to tweak the ending. Anyway, it was still a great ride.

Goddamn it, Hank. I don't hate you, but why do you insist on taking the leads in adaptations of my favorite game franchises? Especially this one, where FemShep is so much better than the default dude.

We, fans, are definitely NOT desperate for a live-action movie because it won't do justice to its universe. Must be a series!

But maybe he's working in the new game, Mass Effect 4. Yvonne Stravoski is in the 2nd game so it's possible.
