Mortal Kombat is set for release in just under a month's time, and several sites were given the opportunity to check out the video game reboot's opening sequence.

The 13-minute prologue takes place in ancient Japan, as Hanzo Hasashi's (Hiroyuki Sanada) family are massacred by Bi-han (Joe Taslim) and his fellow Lin Kuei ninjas. Before he dies, Hashasi vows vengeance on Bi-han, warning him "never to forget his face."

Of course, these two warriors will eventually cross paths again as Scorpion and Sub-Zero, but this opening scene also sets up another intriguing plot thread. Hashashi's infant son survives after being rescued by Raiden, and it's heavily implied that Lewis Tan's Cole Young will ultimately be revealed as Scorpions ancestor.

You can check out the full breakdown over at Bloody Disgusting, and we also have a clip from the scene below. It's very brief, but we do get to see the man who will become Scorpion cutting his way through Sub-Zero's men with ease.

In “Mortal Kombat,” MMA fighter Cole Young, accustomed to taking a beating for money, is unaware of his heritage—or why Outworld's Emperor Shang Tsung has sent his best warrior, Sub-Zero, an otherworldly Cryomancer, to hunt Cole down. Fearing for his family's safety, Cole goes in search of Sonya Blade at the direction of Jax, a Special Forces Major who bears the same strange dragon marking Cole was born with. Soon, he finds himself at the temple of Lord Raiden, an Elder God and the protector of Earthrealm, who grants sanctuary to those who bear the mark.
Here, Cole trains with experienced warriors Liu Kang, Kung Lao and rogue mercenary Kano, as he prepares to stand with Earth’s greatest champions against the enemies of Outworld in a high stakes battle for the universe. But will Cole be pushed hard enough to unlock his arcana—the immense power from within his soul—in time to save not only his family, but to stop Outworld once and for all?

Mortal Kombat is set for a simultaneous release in theaters and on HBO Max this April 12.

I absolutely love Hiroyuki Sanada, he's the main reason I want to see this movie! His swordplay has been featured in movies, but excited to see him get back to some hand to hand martial arts!

@kirbyfan - his and Taslim are got me so pumped for this movie. Sanada is a great martial artist and as an actor has quite the presence. Perfect actor for scorpion.

Also perfect actor to depict the live action version of Fire lord Oza from Avatar the last airbender.
