Milla Jovovich is returning to the video game world. Variety
reports production on Constantin Film's
Monster Hunter, an adaptation of the Capcom game series, will begin in September, with the
Resident Evil star reuniting with director Paul W.S. Anderson and producer Jeremy Bolt. The movie has a reported budget of $60 million.
Toronto's Technicolor-owned Mr. X, which also worked on the
Resident Evil movie franchise, will supply special effects for the movie. Constantin Film's CEO Martin Moszkowicz said
Monster Hunter will be a
"highly sylish big screen adaptation of the video game," according to Variety, which seems to be part of the reason for Paul W.S. Anderson.
“Paul has proven over and over he does stylish movies. It’s one of his big strong points. He can make a movie look good, is very much into visuals,” Moszkowicz said of the director. He added that Monster Hunter is envisioned as a series, saying, "We are in the business of brand creation."
Capcom announced on Wednesday that Monster Hunter: World had become the publisher's best-selling game of all-time, shipping 7.9 million copies since its release in January. But will the game's popularity translate to the box office? For what it's worth, the Resident Evil film franchise - despite negative reviews - is currently the highest-grossing film series based on a video game, with the six movies earning over $1.2 billion at the worldwide box office.
