The first Sonic The Hedgehog movie proved to be a surprise hit for Paramount Pictures (it currently holds the title of fifth highest-grossing video game movie in history), and a sequel is set to spin into theaters next year.
It's just been announced that the trailer will be online at some point tomorrow, and the first promo poster has been released in anticipation. There's no sign of Knuckles (Idris Elba), but the titular blue speedster (Ben Schwartz) is joined by Tails the fox (who will be voiced by Colleen O'Shaughnessey), and the villainous Doctor Robotnik/Eggman (Jim Carrey).
The cast will also feature returning human stars James Marsden (X-Men; Westworld), Tika Sumpter (Mixed-ish; Ride Along), and Natasha Rothwell (Wonder Woman 1984; Like a Boss), along with new addition Shemar Moore (Criminal Minds; S.W.A.T.)
A plot synopsis recently leaked online, giving us a much better idea of what to expect from the sequel's story.
"After settling in Green Hills, Sonic is ready for more freedom, and Tom and Maddie agree to leave him home while they go on vacation. But, no sooner are they gone, when Dr. Robotnik comes back, this time with a new partner, Knuckles, in search for an emerald that has the power to both build and destroy civilizations. Sonic teams up with his own sidekick, Tails, and together they embark on a journey to find the emerald before it falls into the wrong hands."
Director Jeff Fowler returns to helm Sonic The Hedgehog 2, which is set for release on April 8, 2022.
