THE SUPER MARIO GALAXY MOVIE Reviews Call It "Lazy Junk" As Sequel's Rotten Tomatoes Score Is Revealed

With the first reviews for The Super Mario Galaxy Movie now counted, a Rotten Tomatoes score for The Super Mario Bros. Movie sequel has been revealed, and it's not looking good.

The review embargo for The Super Mario Galaxy Movie lifted yesterday afternoon, and we now have a Rotten Tomatoes score for this follow-up to 2023's The Super Mario Bros. Movie. Like that, it's firmly in "Rotten" territory on the review aggregator.

That first instalment received a 59% score from critics, but a glowing 95% on the Popcornmeter. It was also a huge financial success, so there's no reason to believe it's game over for Mario and company with its 44% score on the Tomatometer (based on 84 verdicts).

Critics aren't being kind to Illumination's video game adaptation, with the prevailing opinion being that the sequel is paper-thin and too light on story to make much of an impact on anyone other than die-hard Nintendo fans...who may yet be disappointed by what sounds like an endless barrage of cameos and Easter Eggs.

Perhaps the most damning verdict comes from The Wrap. The trade declares, "This lazy junk will probably make a billion dollars!"

Things don't get any better from there. Over to Nerdist, and it's said, "The Super Mario Galaxy Movie and its vibes and quips and video game references might delight Nintendo-philes without ever having to tell a story. But if this is all we're ever going to get from Nintendo's cinematic offerings, I'll opt not to play again."

IGN writes, "It’s fun seeing all that stuff on screen, but without some kind of relatable story thriving underneath those references, it’s not as effective as it could be." Looper seemed to share a similar sentiment, but acknowledged, "I can make no great intellectual defense of this movie, and it doesn't belong in any serious 'Animation is Cinema' memes, but I had a good time."

Some critics couldn't look past The Super Mario Galaxy Movie's failure to live up to the game it shares a name with. As Discussing Film put it, "The original Super Mario Galaxy game from 2007 shouldn’t feel far more cinematic, epic, emotional, and sophisticated than a 100-million-dollar animated movie."

GamesRadar+ explained, "The boundless inventiveness Nintendo is known for never quite bleeds through as you would expect, especially as an adaptation of one of Mario's most beloved 3D platformers." The Guardian, however, was far harsher: "Of course it’s intended for little kids, but it surely didn’t need to be such a visually dull screensaver of a movie, with even more of the cheesy, Euro-knockoff look of that first film."

The Times went one step further with a 0* score and a blistering, "The film is torturous to sit through and, for me, provoked periods of actual physical discomfort." Variety's review, while also negative, was a little more balanced in its similar disdain. "Not a single one of these characters, including Mario and Luigi, occupies the center of 'The Super Mario Galaxy Movie.' And that’s because the movie has no center."

Were there any good reviews? JoBlo.com calls it "hyperactive, but fans will still like it - as will kids," and Big Gold Bet Media exclaimed, "While rooted in nostalgia, The Super Mario Galaxy Movie delivers a visually stunning and forward-moving expansion of Nintendo’s universe."

Lyles' Movie Files added, "A welcome follow-up in the Super Mario Bros’ movie franchise, Super Mario Galaxy Movie should have no trouble leveling up at the box office."

It's a good point. Over Easter, the sequel is expected to earn $350 million worldwide, putting it on track to match the success of The Super Mario Bros. Movie, which grossed over $1.3 billion worldwide.

Like many animated franchises, this one will likely be critic-proof, but poor word-of-mouth could still slow its momentum in the weeks ahead.

Even the "Fresh" reviews aren't overly kind, but as you can see above, many of the negative ones really go all in on a movie, making it sound thoroughly unwatchable. An overreaction? Perhaps, and plenty of people will argue that this is a franchise not made for critics.

The Super Mario Galaxy Movie is an animated film based on the world of Super Mario Bros., and follows The Super Mario Bros. Movie, which was released in 2023 and earned more than $1.3 billion worldwide. Both the 2023 film and The Super Mario Galaxy Movie were produced by Chris Meledandri of Illumination and Shigeru Miyamoto of Nintendo.

The Super Mario Galaxy Movie is directed by returning filmmakers Aaron Horvath and Michael Jelenic, from a screenplay by returning screenwriter Matthew Fogel, with Brian Tyler returning to compose the score.

Benny Safdie and Brie Larson were the last major additions to the cast as Princess Rosalina and Bowser Jr., with Chris Pratt (Mario), Anya Taylor-Joy (Princess Peach), Charlie Day (Luigi), Jack Black (Bowser), Keegan-Michael Key (Toad), and Kevin Michael Richardson (Kamek) all reprising their roles from The Super Mario Bros. Movie.

The Super Mario Galaxy Movie will be released in theaters on April 3, 2026.

I'm not sure what these critics expect from these types of movies. It's an animated movie aimed primarily at children; it's not the Godfather.

@TheJok3r - I think the base has been set pretty high because there have been so many excellent animated features that work on multiple levels. Now critics expect a film with a story, internal logic, relatable themes, and emotional value..... as should we all

@ProfessorWhy - *bar, not base.
And additionally, children deserve great art also

@ProfessorWhy - I think there should be different criteria for how movies are rated. If an animated movie sets out to have emotional value and relatable themes, then it should be rated based on whether or not it achieves those goals. If however we get a movie like Mario that clearly isn't that kind of movie, nor was it ever marketed as one, then it should be rated using a different criteria.

vectorsigma - 4/1/2026, 5:07 AM
@TheJok3r - it can still be aimed at children but shouldnt be lazily produced and still maintain a good story and memorable characters that will entail emotions. Otherwise it's just a cocomelon content

Lmao. Animated movies can still be dogshit, my guy.

TheJok3r - 4/1/2026, 9:03 AM
@regmovieguy - The first movie had a critic rating of 59%, but an audience rating of 95%, so the critics clearly misunderstood what the movie was trying to be. I don't think it's unreasonable to assume that the same thing will happen again with this movie.
regmovieguy
regmovieguy - 4/1/2026, 9:11 AM
@TheJok3r

Audience ratings are awful and don't give any insight into a movie. The worst movie I've seen this year, Mercy, has a 80%+ audience rating and it's an unintentionally funny, horrible piece of shit movie. I'm sure there's countless more examples but the audience rating is not reliable at all especially on sites like RT, Metacritic, and iMDB. They can be manipulated so easily.

"The boundless inventiveness Nintendo is known for..."

Nintendo has never been known to be extremely creative on story when it comes to Mario. They focus more on the enjoyment of play.

If it's anything like the first one, then it'll be fun. It's best not to want more than what it is, since Nintendo isn't about to make a 40 year change and do something wild with their core IP.

Serious reviewers seriously reviewing children's media not taking into account the actual intended audience always makes me laugh.

Buncha Scorcese types gunna wring their hands "we want people in theatres so the industry doesn't die, but we hate the things that actually keep them open"

go screw.

This is soulless cash grab, and the budget's low because illumination outsources most of their animation, so what's the point of even doing this crap? For money. The first one was tepid and lame, a bare bones story. I guess this is the same. It's amazing how they're phoning it in when they can actually TRY TO make something truly spectacular and make a lot of money.

The first one was awesome, and very well done with it's lore, references and easter eggs. I am actually shocked it only has a 59%. Seeing as this falls into the same, I expect it will be just as good as the first. It's a [frick]ing Mario movie aimed at kids, how are we rating this on the same scale as like a serious movie?

Such a strange contrast... Mario dominates in gaming while Sonic lags behind, yet when it comes to films, Sonic finds success where Mario falls short. I guess Jim Carrey helps.

supermanrex - 4/1/2026, 10:14 AM
@XRayCat - where is your evidence mario falls short. are you just hot taking the rotten tomatoes for this comment? the first one made a billion [frick]ing dollars. where is the failure in that? i dont think any sonics have made a billion
XRayCat
XRayCat - 4/1/2026, 10:29 AM
@supermanrex - Yes, my statement was clearly based off Rotten Tomatoes and the overall reception of the films you jackass. The Sonic movies are arguably better while the games are not. Of course the first Mario movie would hit a billion. That was always a given...

I think your vagina just got wet at the idea of calling me out on something. Go back to your nonsensical rants and let the grown folks talk.

Kids will love this and make parents take them to see it multiple times and also sell billions in merch and games. Critics can critique this as much as they want but this is a platform to sell games and merch over anything else... and it will work again. I can't wait to see it because it looks fun just like the last one.

Critics really suck. They call it lazy junk but wanna get literally butt hurt when you refuse to watch whatever left wing nonsense they spent 300 million dollars producing. Well guess what? That “lazy junk” is keeping your industry alive. So eat it up losers.

“Critics really suck. They call it lazy junk but wanna get literally butt hurt when you refuse to watch whatever left wing nonsense they spent 300 million dollars producing.”

How insecure do you have to be to get upset over what critics think of a Mario movie?
Oberlin4Prez
Oberlin4Prez - 4/1/2026, 8:02 PM
@regmovieguy - The only one sounding insecure here is you, desperately white-knighting for film critics like they’re some sacred priesthood whose approval keeps your worldview intact.

Newsflash: audiences don’t need critics’ permission to enjoy movies. The Mario movie (and plenty of other ‘lazy junk’) is raking in hundreds of millions because normal people actually like fun entertainment that doesn’t lecture them. Meanwhile the beloved over priced and under watched prestige flops with messages nobody asked for keep bombing and then critics cry about ‘the death of cinema.’

If critics were half as smart as they think they are, they’d notice the industry is only staying afloat thanks to the very movies they sneer at. But sure, keep simping for the people who hate what the public actually wants. Must be exhausting being this mad that a kids’ movie based on a video game isn’t trying to win Oscars or push an agenda.

Stay pressed.

“Newsflash: audiences don’t need critics’ permission to enjoy movies.”

Never said they did? Lmao. Like what you like but you don’t have to be an insecure bitch about it.

“But sure, keep simping for the people who hate what the public actually wants.”

You’re a grown ass man crying over critics not liking The Super Mario Bros. No one’s saying you can’t enjoy these movies but there’s not some conspiracy from random critics to pan them either.

“Stay pressed.”

Your complete lack of self-awareness is [frick]ing hilarious.

These movies are made for tiny kiddos and fans that just want to see stuff they recognize. I'm sure it will hit the target audience, just fine. The rest of us get to feel like we're trapped in a video game cutscene for 2 hours.
