From AICN:

The last major update that we had on AICN on the WORLD OF WARCRAFT came from... back in 2007. The last major bit I heard was a rumor that Uwe Boll was offering Blizzard untold tonnages of gold left crowns of undetermined origin to direct - and that allegedly BLIZZARD laughed his ass out of the place. ...We were supposed to get this movie in 2009 with a $100 million budget. With LEGENDARY's main man telling BLIZZCON that it'd be over that figure. And there was some concept art.

Well, I don't have concept art. I don't have the firm release date, but I do know who is directing the WORLD OF WARCRAFT film and that is Sam Raimi. It will come out in trades later this week or next. But you can take this one to the bank...

According to Wikipedia:

World of Warcraft, often referred to as WoW, is a massively multiplayer online role-playing game (MMORPG) by Blizzard Entertainment. It is the fourth released game set in the fantasy Warcraft universe, which was first introduced by Warcraft: Orcs & Humans in 1994. World of Warcraft takes place within the Warcraft world of Azeroth, two years after the events at the conclusion of Blizzard's previous Warcraft release, Warcraft III: The Frozen Throne. Blizzard Entertainment announced World of Warcraft on September 2, 2001. The game was released on November 23, 2004, on the 10th anniversary of the Warcraft franchise...

With more than 11.5 million monthly subscribers, World of Warcraft is currently the world's most-subscribed MMORPG and holds the Guinness World Record for the most popular MMORPG. In April 2008, World of Warcraft was estimated to hold 62 percent of the massively multiplayer online game (MMOG) market.

And not but a few minutes after I posted this, here is the official press release from Blizzard:

Raimi, acclaimed director of the blockbuster Spider-Man series, will bring the forces of the Horde and the Alliance to life in epic live-action film. Charles Roven's Atlas Entertainment will produce alongside Raimi's Stars Road Entertainment.

LOS ANGELES, Jul 22, 2009 (BUSINESS WIRE) -- Blizzard Entertainment, Inc. and Legendary Pictures announced today that Sam Raimi has signed on to direct the eagerly-anticipated major motion picture based on Blizzard Entertainment(R)'s award-winning Warcraft(R) universe. Raimi has, in the course of his career, clearly demonstrated a genius for developing and adapting existing fictional universes for mainstream audiences while staying true to the spirit of the original content.

Raimi directed the Spider-Man trilogy, which has broken box-office records around the world and garnered five Academy Award(R) nominations. Known for his imaginative filmmaking style, richly drawn characters and offbeat humor, Raimi wrote and directed the cult classic, The Evil Dead and produced 30 Days Of Night. He most recently wrote and directed the supernatural thriller, Drag Me To Hell.

"At its core, Warcraft is a fantastic, action-packed story," said Raimi. "I am thrilled to work with such a dynamite production team to bring this project to the big screen."

Charles Roven's producing talents were recently seen with last summer's blockbuster The Dark Knight, which grossed in excess of $1 billion, was nominated for eight Academy Awards(R) and won two. His body of work also includes the widely acclaimed Batman Begins and the sci-fi classic 12 Monkeys. Roven, with Atlas producing partner Alex Gartner, will be producing with Legendary Pictures CEO Thomas Tull, Legendary's Chief Creative Officer Jon Jashni, Raimi and Raimi's producing partner Joshua Donen. Raimi's partner, Robert Tapert, will be an Executive Producer and Blizzard Entertainment's Senior Vice President of Creative Development, Chris Metzen, a Co-Producer.

"Partnering with Sam Raimi exemplifies Legendary's mandate of marrying the highest quality intellectual property to world-class filmmakers," said Legendary's Tull. "Sam's passion for 'Warcraft' is undeniable and we know that he will create an incredible film worthy of Blizzard's phenomenal franchise. We look forward to collaborating with our partners at Warner Bros. and continuing our successful relationship with Chuck in bringing this rich new world to the screen."

"Blizzard Entertainment and Legendary Pictures have a shared vision for this film and we searched at length to find the very best director to bring that vision to life," said Paul Sams, chief operating officer of Blizzard Entertainment. "From our first conversation with Sam, we could tell he was the perfect choice. Sam knows how to simultaneously satisfy the enthusiasts and the mainstream audience that might be experiencing that content for the first time. We're looking forward to working with him to achieve that here."

"Blizzard Entertainment's Warcraft has become a second home for millions of players and Sam's experience and talent make him the perfect director for this remarkable and action-packed world," said Atlas' Roven. "Alex and I are proud to be working with Sam and re-teaming with our friends at Legendary and Warner Bros."

The film will fall under Legendary Pictures' co-production and co-financing deal with Warner Bros. "Warcraft is emblematic of the kind of branded, event films for which our studio is best known. We have enjoyed great success with our partners at Legendary, and this is an incredible opportunity for us to work with Sam on a project that is so eagerly anticipated by so many," said Jeff Robinov, President, Warner Bros. Pictures Group.

Blizzard Entertainment's Warcraft universe is a rich fantasy setting that revolves around the epic conflict between the opposing forces of the Horde and the Alliance. Since its debut in 1994, Warcraft has developed a loyal following across the globe, with several bestselling, award-winning PC games and a range of popular licensed products including novels, action figures, apparel, comic books, board games, and more. World of Warcraft(R), Blizzard Entertainment's subscription-based massively multiplayer online role-playing game set in the Warcraft universe, is the most popular game of its kind in the world. Its most recent expansion, Wrath of the Lich King(TM), is the fastest-selling PC game of all time, with more than 2.8 million copies sold in its first 24 hours of availability and more than 4 million in its first month.

Further details about the upcoming Warcraft movie, including cast and targeted release date, will be revealed as development progresses.

The information age is living up to its name tonight. This just came in from Variety:

The plan is for Raimi to supervise development of "Warcraft" and shoot the picture after he completes work on "Spider-Man 4," which gets under way early next year for Columbia Pictures.

There is a very rich history behind World of Warcraft. So much in fact, that it would be very hard to know which direction they will choose to take the film. Honestly, I would like to see CGI for this one. Leave the live action to the super heroes.

I agree Smoken. CGI would be perfect for this film. NO live action. Also there are so many directions they can go.

It is frickin' cool. Yeah I know Raimi, he made Spidey 3, but still... I believe he can deal with such a giant budgeted production.
Only point is that they MUST put a balance and keep it hard between the Horde and the Alliance-scum :))
It mustn't be a movie about their never-ending war. Instead, they must join their forces together and act like one to a great evil: I-dont-know-who (Lich King would be sooo predictable and too commercial. Besides, I think it must take place at ancient times of WOW, looooong before the Lich King was born) which can easily be found and plotted in WOW's rich story/history. And PLEASE do not put some bloody Humans on leading roles. Night or Blood, doesn't matter, elves will suit the best.
The Alliance sucks and Humans suck hardest among them :-)

For the Horde!

------------------------------------------------------------

At the time I wrote my review, there wasn't the part beginning with "According to Wikipedia..."
After reading the additional material I can say YAY!!! No, I must say DOUBLE YAY!!!
It's the most perfect birthday gift I've recieved so far. This team's gonna rock and make WoW blow. I'm soo frickin' excited now. Just can't wait. TRIPLE YAY!!! But still, humans suck!

Epic-o-meter: Star Wars>WoW>LOTR

For the Horde!

crew behind 300 and Dark Knight and Watchmen are working on WoW movie also

I think WoW could be rated R lol. That 300 team loves gore and war.

this is a good choice for a team to helm WoW. Shows that Blizzard wasnt f**king around when they said they did not want to make a movie for the players, they wanted an epic film along side star wars and lord of the rings.
Sam Raimi and Chris Metzen working together is going to be awesome

forget Spidey, the man did Evil Dead and Army of Darkness. Cult classics among comic fans.

Does anyone else fear the presence of a Dancing Arthas? Because as we all know, Raimi equates evil with dancing.

the movie is not going to be a story already told. Its a movie with characters set in the WoW universe. The main characters will not be well known heroes. That was confirmed in the first blizzcon i attended.

It's a decent game and it has a crap load of material to draw from. It doesn't have to be bogged down by the many details in the Warcraft world, they can just pick a certain race or point in its history and just go for it. Some nerd is going to be disappointed that their favorite race or class isn't showcased but that's inevitable with a game that size and that much depth.

I'd be interesting to see it live-action. Full CGI would also be cool, but it would be taking the easy road in a way. Movies based on video games have a fairly low hurdle to jump thanks to jokes like Uwe Boll. So far the best movie from game adaptation is Silent Hill if they can top that or stay level with it, they're golden.

A World of Warcraft movie . . . . . huh . . . . . its a shame this requires all of their fans to step outside into the real world and interact with real human beings to attend.

The info keeps pouring out over this. It's freaking mind-boggling how much keeps popping up.

I used to love WoW back in the day. I had played it since it came out up until about a year ago. Once all the original developers left, it just changed into some sort of fanatical beast. I just wasn't interested any more. But I do love the mythos and think this is awesome news!

One step closer to a Diablo movie. ;)

WHAT?!?! Raimi doing the WoW movie? [frick] that! He's ruined the Spiderman movie franchise, destroyed the Sword of Truth book series with the shitty TV adaptation... and now he's gonna more than likely screw with the World of Warcraft story now too?!?

I'll go see it as a WoW fan, but I swear, if Raimi does ANYTHING to mess with the story of the series, I'm walking out of the theatre. I'm big on WoW lore, and if it's not to the book I'm out.

Why... why Raimi... anyone else but the original/source-butcherer... by that I mean anyone that won't do it with their own personal take on it. *cough* Eddie Brock dying *cough*

'nuff said.

@Slayer420: You may not like Raimi, but it looks like the other option was Uwe Boll. Trust me, Raimi is the lesser of two evils there.

WOW is the MMO of choice for 15yr olds. Its targeted for that pre-teen to teen demographic. My question is what would ever make any of you think that this would be a good movie. When you know that right off the bat that it will probably end up being as bad or worse than the D&D movie that had marlon wayans as the side kick.

Ohh please keep us up to date on this future flop of a movie.

Hellmont @ WoW is the MMO of choice for most gamers, not just the 15yr olds. I am 35, and play with more others my age then I could conceivably count. The game has 11 million subscribers. That's a bigger population than some countries. Sure, there are kids playing, but they are the minority IMO. I believe the more serious players are made up of college age kids.
teabag @ LoL, I'm sure the game has caused a divorce or two. Much like any addiction, gaming addiction is real. If a person were to let it get the best of them it can take them to very bad places(Southpark Episode). But if used in moderation, can be very enjoyable without interrupting everyday life.

That would be so [frick]ing cool if he directed this.
TheMyth

This is great news in a way. I don't know about Raimi being attached, but I am a WoW-aholic, and have been for years. I started playing the franchise during Warcraft 2, and lemme say there is so much lore to play with... I could hardly see many characters being done justice with one film... but if I had to guess, they would probably follow the story of Arthas. Though I'd prefer they went back earlier in the mythos.

Teabag, lol, you used to play WoW didn't you, or a relative or something, cause that is a pretty personal observation of the game lol. Though I have seen it break up marriages, but in all honesty, how can you blame the game, at the most it could be a mere catalyst for a larger issue, but no one is divorcing purely on the basis of, "He/She plays Warcraft too much."

SmokenOaken, I totally agree. I know one person under the age of 20 in the game, and I've been playing for 3 years. There are younger players, but there are just as many older players, enough that I can pick and choose and not have to associate with immature children with short attention spans.

Whatever goes down, I want to see unbathed heathen Horde slaughtered by the thousands. FOR THE ALLIANCE!

I don't understand all the hate towards Rami, so he f^cked up Spider-Man 3, so what? I'm a huge Spidey fan and I didn't like the third one either, but that doesn't mean he's a bad director. He's done plenty of other good movies Christ some of you people don't give any chances.

"This director is awesome! I love all of his work." (Insert one bad movie out of dozen of good ones) "F^ck this director everything he touches blows donkey dick!"

See my point? And I agree Gunsmith, Weta for the CGI that would be perfect. I never played the game, though my bro and girlfriend used to dominate in it, it always looked interesting so I'll definitely check it out. I enjoy these genres.

SmokenOaken
SmokenOaken - 7/22/2009, 7:38 AM
Sadly, as much as I want this to be complete CGI, the press release does say Live Action. :( At least they should go with WETA, so that will still make it promising.

WoW is so stylized, I'm really not sure how it will turn out actually put into a real, detailed, world.

I am part of that 11 Million and I am 34.

This is going to be epic. For all the non players, youtube WoW trailers. Those are CGI but the direction on those are amazing.

I too would like to see it in CGI. I would think it would be easier to show the variety of the many races, characters and classes, but i am cool with live action too. I was worried that the detail would be missing because of the budget for this type of picture. Not any more. If you think about 11 million subscribers at $16 a month. Clearly Blizzard wont have an issue financing this picture.

It's impossible to say what it will be like at this point, but as far as I can tell there is a lot of good material for a movie. I could be amazing, and it could be horrible.

I'm a WoW addict and I'm 34. I can't understand all the hate for the game, especially when all of us read comic books, which are consider by many outsiders as "childish".

Sam Rami is not a bad director, he made a terrible movie (Spiderman 3), but the guy also made Spiderman 1 and 2, Evil Dead 1 and 2, Amry of Darkness and Drag Me to Hell. So in my book his numbers are still good, let’s hope the WoW movie engrosses his good movie count.

For the Horde!

I just really, really, REALLY hope Raimi doesn't deviate from the original stories so many people have experienced and read and gotten hooked on. I don't care if it's a re-telling to-the-letter. I'd rather see that than some made up additional origin story where Thrall has a long-lost brother, or Illidan/Arthas/"insert major threat here" finds some additional power they never had in the games/books.

Just please... please keep it true to the games/books... that's all I ask. Hollywood's ruined so many other potentially great franchises, I would hate to see WoW tainted by becoming a fail movie...
