The first Tomb Raider movie didn't receive the warmest of responses from critics, but it turned a decent profit at the box office and Warner Bros. soon announced plans to release a sequel.
COVID-19 slowed things down on that front, and while Free Fire's Ben Wheatley was initially attached to direct (an unexpected choice), the movie lost him and its 2021 release date last year. Since then, Lovecraft Country creator Misha Green has been tasked with taking the helm of the movie, while a glimpse of the script later confirmed she was in the midst of rewrites.
Talking to Collider, Tomb Raider star Alicia Vikander shared an update on where things stand with Tomb Raider: Obsidian (the title Green hopes to use). "Pre-COVID, I would’ve said yes. And now I think it’s a yes still. It’s not greenlit, but the script is in the making, and I think everyone is excited and I would love to revisit Lara again," she shared.
"It’s very recent. It’s really now when the world is up and running again [that the script is being written], and Misha is onboard and she’s working on the script right now," Vikander added. "So I’m very excited to sort of read something very soon."
Based on these comments, it sounds like Tomb Raider 2/Tomb Raider: Obsidian is a long way from becoming a reality, and at this rate, cameras may not start rolling until well into 2022.
The question is, will even those who enjoyed that first movie care about a sequel by that point?
