Tomb Raider 2 has landed a new director, as Lovecraft Country showrunner/creator Misha Green has signed on to helm and write the upcoming sequel for MGM.

Deadline is reporting that Green is set to make her feature debut with the movie, and Alicia Vikander has been confirmed to reprise the role of Lara Croft. Angelia Jolie previously played the character in 2001's Lara Croft: Tomb Raider and its sequel.

Last we heard, Ben Wheatley (Rebecca, Kill List) was attached to direct, so we assume he was replaced. Whatever the case may be, there's no mention of the filmmaker in the trade's reports.

Roar Uthaug helmed the recent reboot, which was a modest hit (close to $275 million globally) despite getting mixed reviews. Tomb Raider 2 will be produced by Graham King via his GK Films banner, along with Elizabeth Cantillon via The Cantillon Company.

Production was set to commence last year prior to the pandemic forcing industry-wide delays, and the movie was recently undated. Now, it'll likely be well into 2021 before cameras start rolling.

Green is also set to write and produce Netflix's The Mother, and will work as a producer on upcoming films Cleopatra Jones and The Gilded Ones.

The first one was a drag, the story that Vikander only did the close ups and let a double stand in for her was more amusing than the film itself.

That being said: Lara Croft deserves a great movie, so make it happen

Not gonna lie, I hugely prefer the 90's games over the newer reboot. Lara felt like a superhero. You really believed she could somersault off a Sphynx, slaughter undead warriors and battle frickin' dragons and not take any damage.

Adding too much gritty realism to Lara kills the fantasy of her pulpy origins. The new games went too far in the 'Batman Begins' direction, and it killed the fun.

Was the 1st one any good? Did it have supernatural elements to it?

@WruceBayne - Supernatural virus thing, but other than that, nope. Didn't have the giant undead samurai bosses from the game. I wanted my money back

Is there gonna be an unsettling butler that always jingles cocktails in the comfort of her lush acrobatic mansion?

This made enough to justify a sequel? I forgot this movie as soon as I watched it

Lovecraft Country was amazing! LC’s best characters were usually the female leads, so I have high hopes for what she can do with Laura. I hope she can bring some of the pulp nature of the OG games had into this movie.

Love the new games, and thought this movie was a blast. Not an amazing film, but definitely fun and I'm excited that they're making another one.

The first one was ok, even though it really just seemed like a big set up for a sequel. It also seems like it was way longer than 3 years ago for some reason.

I just would love them to embrace the fantasy element, Lara Croft SHOULD a major franchise.

I also think mix the 90s Mummy Fantasy Elements with Bourne style action and win win.

@DrRichards @MarvellousPORG - not sure if you guys are looking for a show to watch, but I just finished the 5 episode French show Lupin on Netflix that just came out and I highly recommend checking it out. Its a crime thriller/drama and its well acted (Omar Sy is terrific) with some brilliant "illusions" and a captivating central plot driving the story forwards.
