WONDER WOMAN Is Now Officially The Highest Grossing Live-Action Film Directed By A Woman
Mere days after crossing the $600 million mark, Patty Jenkins' Wonder Woman has officially become the highest grossing live-action film directed by a woman ever. Plus, weekly box office update.
We knew it was coming and over the weekend, it finally happened. Patty Jenkins' DC blockbuster, Wonder Woman, is now the highest grossing live-action film directed by a woman ever!
After raking in another $24.9 million stateside this past weekend, which was good enough for a second-place finish, the Warner Bros.' production has now grossed over $653.9 million worldwide, surpassing the previous record holder: Phyllida Lloyd's Mamma Mia! ($609.8 million).
Domestically, Wonder Woman is on pace to become the highest grossing DC Extended Universe entry, supplanting Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, which currently holds the title with a $330.3 million haul in the U.S. Globally, the film should surpass the final collection of Man of Steel ($668 million) by the start of next week, but may fall short of Suicide Squad's $745.6 million.
As for the rest of the top 10, Transformers: The Last Knight won the weekend but had a disappointing five-day domestic debut with $68.5 million. Overseas, the Michael Bay film continued the blockbuster franchise's long-running streak of performing exceptionally well by raking in a Unicron-sized $199.2 million. Its current worldwide sum stands at $267.7 million.
Pixar's Cars 3 finished third with $24.1 million in its second frame, bringing its domestic sum to $98.8 million and its worldwide collection to $140.9 million.
Universal's The Mummy finished fourth with $6.1 million in its third weekend, bringing its domestic total to $68.7 million. However, its global numbers are a completely different story as the Tom Cruise film has now grossed over $343.9 million worldwide, a number that should bode well for the future of the Dark Universe.
Walt Disney's Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales came in seventh with $5.4 million. It has now earned $160.1 million domestic, over $679.3 million worldwide. DreamWorks Animation's Captain Underpants: The First Epic Movie finished ninth with $4.3 million. It has now earned $65.7 million domestic, $71.9 million worldwide.
Rounding out the top ten is Marvel Studios' Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, which collected another $3 million. The James Gunn-directed film is currently the second-highest domestic grosser of the year with $380.2 million and is the third-highest grossing film of the year with $851.4 million worldwide.
