Following the lukewarm response to X-Men: Apocalypse and Jennifer Lawrence seeming a little fed up with donning the blue paint again while doing press for the film, many assumed that she'd be bidding farewell to the role of shape-shifting mutant Mystique.

Of course, we now know that the Academy Award-winner will return for X-Men: Dark Phoenix, and during a new interview with EW she reveals that Simon Kinberg taking the reigns of the franchise was one of the main reasons why.

“I kind of f—ed myself,” Lawrence jokes. “Because when I was trying to talk Simon into directing, he said something like, ‘If I direct it, you have to do it,’ and I was like, ‘Of course! Duh!’ Then they offered me the movie, and I was like, ‘Goddammit!'”

As it turns out, Lawrence was glad she did decide to come back:

“Acting-wise it was the best experience I’ve had [on these films]. He’s been writing these characters for so long and he knows them so deeply. I suddenly felt more connected to my character than I ever have been before.” Plus, the shoot was calm and fun, something that is not always the case with the X-Men films. “It was unrecognizable,” admits Lawrence. “Everything was on time. Everything was organized. These movies have always been fun amidst chaos, and now they were fun with no chaos.”

Tell us, are you happy to see Lawrence back as Mystique? What are your first impressions of X-Men: Dark Phoenix overall? Sound off below.
