DON'T LOOK UP Star Jennifer Lawrence On Hollywood Hiatus: "I Just Think Everybody Had Gotten Sick Of Me"

Jennifer Lawrence (The Hunger Games, Dark Phoenix) will return after a lengthy hiatus for Netflix's Don't Look Up, and the actress has now spoken candidly about taking a break from Hollywood.

At one point, Jennifer Lawrence was one of the most prolific actors in Hollywood, but the Academy Award-winner decided to take a hiatus shortly after the release of 2019's X-Men: Dark Phoenix, in which she reprised the role of Mystique for the last time.

This came after a string of movies which were generally seen as box office disappointments (Dark Phoenix, mother! and Passengers), and Lawrence feels that a certain amount of overexposure may have been to blame.

"I was not pumping out the quality that I should have," she admitted during an interview with Vanity Fair. "I just think everybody had gotten sick of me. I’d gotten sick of me. It had just gotten to a point where I couldn’t do anything right. If I walked a red carpet, it was, ‘Why didn’t she run?’… I think that I was people-pleasing for the majority of my life. Working made me feel like nobody could be mad at me: ‘Okay, I said yes, we’re doing it. Nobody’s mad.’ And then I felt like I reached a point where people were not pleased just by my existence. So that kind of shook me out of thinking that work or your career can bring any kind of peace to your soul.”

It was impossible to ignore some of the online negativity surrounding Lawrence's later projects, and it didn't just come from the fans, as several prominent media outlets also had the knives out. Absence does tend to make the heart grow fonder, however, and Lawrence will soon return for Adam McKay's sci-fi satire Don't Look Up.

What do you guys make of Lawrence's comments? Are you looking forward to her comeback? Be sure to share your thoughts in the usual place, and you can also check out Jennifer's VF photoshoot at the link below.

Its a positive trait to be able to admit that you needed some time to rediscover your acting passion. She's a great actress, I hope that her new roles work well!

A commendable level of personal reflection. People were a little too harsh though.

Personally I think she was the weak link in the rebooted x-men flicks. Only because she’s a villain through and through in the comics and had no connection to Charles. But it’s like they tried to make her a thing and forced it on us that it was really annoying. Other than that Jennifer Lawrence as an actress? She’s just there, nothing really spectacular. Damn shame Mother didn’t do better, the symbolism, subtext and metaphors were fantastic.

@grif - A break that happened for like what, a year during the pandemic, and is releasing a film before it's truly over. If she hadn't mentioned it, would anyone have really noticed?

I hate to say it’s true but it is. I didn’t jump on the hate wagon but she’s right. She was over exposed. Like the Rock, and Chris Pratt, and others. What’d Harvey Dent say? You either die a hero, or I can’t sanction your buffoonery.

Damn she’s self aware. Good on her. Sounds harsh but everyone was sick of her.

She right and its actually suprising to hear her say that, with that being said I think she was amazing in mother! and it was a criminally underrated film.

She had that period from 2010-2014 where it looked like she was going to be a phenomenal actor. Consistently good, with the odd brilliant performance. But then she got lazy and started riding o her own hype. Every performance became dull. In some films she seemed like she was only there to collect her paycheque. From someone who I enjoyed watching to as she said someone I’d grown sick off. If she can ever get back to Silver Linings Playbook level, then great. But she definitely needs to stay away from franchises, she simply doesn’t have the passion long enough.

@Ryguy88 - Is the interesting part that you don't say a word when a man's looks are commented on, or did you tip your fedora too low to see your sexism?
