X-MEN ORIGINS: WOLVERINE Star Dominic Monaghan Reflects On Playing Bolt And Making The Movie (Exclusive)

2009's X-Men Origins: Wolverine was the title character's first solo outing, and star Dominic Monaghan has now reflected on his experience while revealing whether he'd board another superhero movie...

Interviews Opinion

X-Men Origins: Wolverine took a lot of liberties with the comic books, but looking beyond Wade Wilson's bizarre transformation and the story behind how Logan lost his memories, there was actually a fair bit to enjoy as well. Included in that category is Dominic Monaghan's Chris Bradley/Bolt, a character who proved to be a hit with Marvel Comics fans.

Introduced as a member of Team X, poor Bradley ended up being killed by Sabretooth. However, he would live on in a way, as his powers were used to create Weapon XI and we'd later learn, in 2017's Logan, that his DNA was used as a template by Transigen to create Bobby, a young mutant gifted with electrokinesis.

Earlier this week, we caught up with Dominic to discuss his new projects Moonhaven and Moriarty: The Devil's Game. We'll have more to share with you soon, but we had to ask the actor about his experience working on X-Men Origins: Wolverine...and whether the superhero genre is one he's hoping to return to in the not too distant future.

"I don’t mind. You never say ‘no’ or close the door on anything in this business. It makes no sense because there are always so many opportunities," Monaghan says in the video above about potentially starring in a future Marvel or DC movie. "I had a great time doing that film, and like you said, it was pre-the explosion of Marvel."

"There is a version of Deadpool in there, but it’s a Deadpool you wouldn’t expect and it is still Ryan Reynolds and the first time we saw him working with that character. I was over in Sydney, my friends were there so I got the chance to spend some time with them. Working with Hugh Jackman, will.i.am, and Ryan…they were all really lovely people. I got the chance to ask Hugh about his workout routine and that was fascinating. He was a gentleman and a beast."

"I love Australia and Sydney and had some of my favourite days on the planet in and around that city. It was a really fun thing," the actor concludes. "It was embraced by the people who loved it and, I’m not in it all the time, but people seem to universally think my character should have been in the film more and that he ended up being pretty cool."

X-Men Origins: Wolverine was a big role for Monaghan coming off the back of The Lord of the Rings and Lost, and he knocked it out of the park in a movie that can't have been easy to make. As he points out, Bolt was a hit with fans and it's a real shame more wasn't done with the obscure mutant character beyond this blockbuster.

Let us know your thoughts on these remarks from the actor down in the comments section!
