Matthew Vaughn Updates X-Men: First Class

Director Matthew Vaughn updates the status of the X-Men: First Class shoot and talks about casting James McAvoy and Michael Fassbender as Prof. X and Magneto!

In a recent interview with Empire, director Matthew Vaughn (Kick-Ass) said that he is excited to be working on X-Men: First Class and that, despite the need for reshoots and the looming release date, everything is "working" out just fine.

I've always wanted to do a movie set in the '60s. The difference is that now I have experience. On X3 [which he was at one point set to direct] it was cast and I just had to tell the story. Here we have to recast every role, recreate the '60s - which is not easy - and redesign everything. We've been playing catch-up, but it's working.

Vaughn went on to say that, even though First Class is a prequel, he did not feel the need to have his actors attempt to play their roles the same way as the actors who played the roles in the original trilogy of X movies.

I wasn't trying to cast the young Patrick [Stewart] or Ian [McKellen]. I was trying to cast the young Professor X and Magneto; what those characters are in my mind. For me, I'm trying to make a movie that stands on its own two feet. Hopefully there'll be a lot more of this version of the franchise.

X-Men: First Class was written by Jane Goldman, who also wrote Vaughn's last teen superhero movie, Kick-Ass. Nicholas Hoult, Caleb Landry Jones, January Jones, Oliver Platt, Lucas Till, Edi Gathegi, Jennifer Lawrence, Jason Flemying, Bill Milner and Morgan Lily also star.

X-Men: First Class opens June 3rd!

A part of me has hope for this as I like Matthew Vaughn but I know it will most likely be a mess.

Still looking forward to the trailer though.

I haven't heard of a First Class TV spot. The ones that were announced by EW are: Captain America: The First Avenger, Kung Fu Panda: The Kaboom of Doom, Thor, Transformers: Dark of the Moon, Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides, Super 8, Cowboys and Aliens, Limitless and Rango.

Good to see you back Brent! :) I'm still not sure what to think of this movie...a trailer will help a great deal, because right now I'm not liking anything apart from the director and a couple of cast members.

I don't know what to think of this movie. Even with a good trailer this could still turn ugly (X-Men: The Last Stand) Whoa. I just noticed it's exactly 4 months away of it's release & still no teaser trailer just pictures. If the story sucks I can only hope there's kick ass action scenes to make up for it.

YeaOkYea, whatever the fans like or hate the concept of this prequel or some of the characters on this, one thing all of us will enjoy is the action scenes.

Well see Magneto, Havok, Emma Frost, Beast, Mystique and more. fighting here and there, so it will be pretty entertaining.

would love to see Marvel get the X universe back and do an all out Phoenix/Shi'ar trilogy. when will Marvel get them back? anybody know?

I wonder how Havok's power will look.
That should be interesting. They used to draw that looking so cool with like rings of energy and then the beam was wide and eratic.

I bet it won't look anything like that, but it would be great if it did

@Josh: Thanks, it's good to be back! I see you and the gang have been holding down the fort while I worked for the man!

@VictorHugo: I would love to see Apocalypse, but this franchise is too grounded in reality—as ridiculous as that is to say considering they are all mutants—for an over-the-top villain like that.

@weneedrevelation: Right? That Magneto helmet kills the helmet in the trilogy.

@CaptainProg: It wasn't up to Vaughn which characters he used; Bryan Singer came up with the story that Goldman put into script form.

I've heard/read a lot of negative stuff about First Class already, which I think is unfair since the movie isn't even out yet. Here are my thoughts on it so far:

• You can't expect it to fall in line with the comics since it's a prequel to the original trilogy, which were also not in line with the comics.
• Matthew Vaughn is a great director. Kick-Ass was great (except the whole jetpack scene at the end—I've still got a problem with that) and his other movies, both as a producer (Lock, Stock & Two Smoking Barrels and Snatch) and as a director (Layer Cake, Stardust) were all really decent.
• James McAvoy and Michael Fassbender are both great actors and the sh*t in their own ways. If the story focuses on them and their performances, it has a chance to be good.
• C'mon, Kevin Bacon as Sebastian Shaw? That's f*cking awesome! Bacon will kill it!

What I am concerned about right now is one thing:

• Time. They are only four months away from the premiere and they just finsished the reshoots and pick-ups?!? Panic!

Well, so much for continuity and being a true prequel, huh? If this is a true prequel and part of the prior continuity, then the characters should have the "future" prior characters in mind as well. Sounds like they are going to reboot and move forward in this version rather than just being a prequel. Just what I thought they would do.

...and bsrprecher...Kevin Bacon doesn't look even remotely close to Sebastian Shaw.

How many years will we have to wait before they do a proper xmen reboot without the world that singer made. I frickin love the first two and I may be alone but wolverine was not terrible, repeat "not terrible". There is far too much that they have changed and thrown continuity out the window it's time to start a new, where havoc is really cyclop's little brother. The only thing I like about this movie is magneto his story needs to be told and this is the closest thing we're gonna get for a while. The reboot is essential if we wanna see a mutant in the marvel universe " scarlette witch for avengers two"!!

@Ranger14
No, I think he means that he was trying to cast the Xavier & Magneto as they were when they were younger. If Fox proceeds with this First Class trilogy, it will probably show the evolution of Xavier & Magneto into how they were in X1 or they will probably do an eventual Cable-time travelling related reboot. Only time will tell

@captainam86
Yea I agree with you, love the first two but its time for a Marvel Studios reboot with the original five X-Men. They could create a First Class trilogy, then move on to another trilogy which introduces the second team of X-Men with Wolverine, Colossus and Storm

I agree with AlexLaChiusa, I have hope since Vaughn is a great director, but I know deep down this will probably be terrible... my main problem with it is it being set in the 60s... sure if it was partly set in the 60s (Just Charles and Erik) then fair enough, but having Havok being about 20 in the 60s makes him about 70 now, and yet he's supposed to be the brother of Cyclops who is in his late 30s early 40s...

AC1 - 2/3/2011, 12:18 PM
If they just get X3 out of continuity, redo some of X-Men Origins (like my X-Men Origins Fan Fic, How It Should Have Been) and make sure The Wolverine is good and faithful, then maybe the series will have hope.
X-Men and X2 are still 2 of my favourite CBMs to date, I've said it before and I'll say it again: Hugh Jackman IS Wolverine in my eyes. The series is in a bad place, but it's still redeemable... I wish Marvel and Fox could come to an arrangement where Marvel Studios produces the rest of the series with the same cast, etc. but it's distributed by Fox.

@JacksonVegaIII I hope you're right!

I really hope they surprise us and it turns out the 60s thing is before the actual first class, then Prof X get his pupils in the late 80s or something

@ Brent you made some good points that i hadn't thought of yet. like the fact that its a prequel based on a trilogy that didn't stick to the original anyways.

Don't know. I think this could be good. Although we all know "The First Class" had Iceman, Cyclops, Beast, Ms.Marvel and Angel. They only have Beast here.
Really looking forward to seeing what Mr. Aranofsky does with The Wolverine.
