Tony Scott & Matt Reeves Final Contendors To Direct Wolverine Origin Sequel?

Has FOX found potential directors for the sequel to X-Men Origins: Wolverine in Tony Scott and Matt Reeves? According the The Playlist they have. Make the jump for details.

Coming from "very" reliable source of The Playlist, apparently FOX has quietly been searching for a director for their followup to X-Men Origins: Wolverine. And while Matthew Vaugh's X-Men: First Class is in the casting stage, several directors who were considered to direct that, have talked to the studio about the gig.

The Playlist says..."Kathryn Bigelow, Timur Bekmambetov, and Daniel Espinosa have talked to FOX about directing WOLVERINE 2, but apparently Fox has narrowed it down to two choices: Matt Reeves and Tony Scott.

Matt Reeves directed Cloverfield 2008 & the upcoming Let Me In, so hes familiar with action and visual effects, which will obviously come to play in a "Wolverine" film. Plus Reeves would probably be the less expensive choice.

And as for Tony Scott, hes had his share of action films, directing "Deja Vu" & "Man On Fire". And while Scott would probably be a bit pricier to bring aboard, The Playlist points out that there is no doubt he would bring his energetic style & make explosions look good.

Regarding the story to the sequel, it was said that the script is very different "based on a story cycle by Frank Miller and Chris Claremont. And Wolverine’s adventures in martial arts will be a love story featuring a Japanese actress."

The sequel was tentatively scheduled earlier this year for a January 2011 start, but rumors have been knocking around that the production start will be pushed back.

Anyhow, if true, who would you rather have; Matt Reeves or Tony Scott presumably directing Hugh Jackman's return as Wolverine?

tony scott to direct wouldn't be a bad choice.
as long as they keep wolverine 2 faithful to wolverine limited series of the 80s by chris claremont & frank miller,i be happy.
but knowing fox as well as we do its gonna be [frick]ed up on a epic scale.

Well as long as we don't get the last lot, we'll get a great WOLVERINE sequel instead of a crappy BORIGINS 2!

Better not [frick] it up again FOX! : P

Creature @ Hell yes!! Luv that mini series!

Kathryn Bigelow can do a lot better than what's certain to be yet another shitty Fox CBM. The events of X-Men Origins: Wolverine have pretty much been made void with First Class looking more and more like a reboot so who cares about this movie when they'll probably end up doing the same again along with a bunch of crappy cameos?

I like the idea of Matt Reeves directing. Cloverfield was good and Let Me In looks good, so give him a chance, he's good at action and suspense, as well as characters. Hopefully J.J Abrams will helps as producer or supervise the script.

Tony Scott isn't that good of a director, the only good films he's directed are True Romance, The Crimson Tide, and Enemy of the State. The rest are bad generic action films.

@ InSpace

I think when they meant "featuring a Japanese actress", they're actually looking for a Japanese actress to play the love interest. Don't be misinformed.

@ commanderhulk

You deserve quote of the day: "Hopefully J.J Abrams will helps as producer or supervise the script."

Folks, Fox is coming out of a hole they buried themselves in for a while. "Avatar" and "Taken" made big bucks and received strong praise, while "Predators" only received strong praise. Maybe they can make incredibly films again like they USED to, rather than degenerate into Lionsgate.

@JoshW
I was thinking that Kathryn would've been the better choice too. But from the two I'd have to go with Reeves. Oh, and if you haven't yet, check my new editorial. It wouldn't have gotten into the front page with all of this Comic-Con stuff going around:

EDITORIAL: Why Elisabeth Harnois Should Be Gwen Stacy

I'd recommend you hurry because, as I feared, alot of other editorials are starting to trample it down to the lower parts.

I did not like Cloverfield, so I'd have to say no to Matt Reeves.

I have not seen Deja Vu, but Man on Fire was bad ass, so maybe Tony Scott could do it.

Ya right Tony Scott.....He's too big a name for this crapfest of a movie. NO FAITH IN FOX EVER! I am so burnt out on X movies because they've [frick]ed them up so bad. Xmen was my childhood. I rarely even comment on the xmen stories published on this site, but oh well. [frick] it.

I would've loved to see a sequel but FOX has made MARVEL look like corporate marketing bullshit. MARVEL should trust themselves man they got a studio of their own, why not use it to their advantage. Too bad the contract is not yet finished poor Wolvie:(

You have two good directors but people are STILL complaining lol? Man on Fire is one of best movies I have ever seen. I'd like either of them to get the job, but my vote is for Tony Scott.

I think they should make Wolverine a bit grittier but to gritty we still want families to see this movie so it will be successful. I vote for none of those directors I vote for James McTeigue he is a great director I absolutely loved V for Vendetta and Ninja Assassin was awesome and fun. I think he would do a true Wolverine movie.

They turned down Kathryn Bigelow? I hope that it's only because she'd probably demand more money than what they want to use. I mean: she is an Academy Award winner, now.

I'm sure Bret Ratner is available. HE would be a perfect fit for this franchise.

Or maybe Mark Stephen Johnson

Mariko Yashida and Lord Shingen Yashida are safe bet!

Silver Samurai, Sunfire and Sunpyre, mehbeh a lil bit of the Hand cameo type stuff, Lord Darkwind* would all be acceptable to me i adapting. Good opportunity to throw in Sunfire especially for flavor since he will likely never see an a film on the X-roster.Silver Samurai is a must as the primary physical adversary to Wolvie. Aside from the classic story, there is more to pull from to amalgamate several great stories to include some of our favorite characters without overloading and also giving us a great story. I have high hopes for this one. As for Sabertooth returning, how about this:

After credits scene, Logan is doing the bar thing when a monstrous stranger walks into the bar. As he approaches Logan he bares a fanged grin, "Happy Birthday, Runt."

"They turned down Kathryn Bigelow? I hope that it's only because she'd probably demand more money than what they want to use. I mean: she is an Academy Award winner, now."

That's exactly it, too. I read an article in Variety about how there's a surplus of directors looking for work and a limited amount of high profile films to choose from. This gives the studios leverage to hire whoever is willing to work for the smallest paycheck.
