Concept artist, Kelton Cram, has recently contributed his artistic talents to Steven Spielberg's television series, Falling Skies, and Jon M. Chu's G.I. Joe: Retaliation. But today, I wanted to show you his designs for James Mangold's The Wolverine. In the film, Viper (Svetlana Khodchenkova) showcases a mutant ability to heal, by shedding her wounded skin. If you haven't seen the film, and you should, it's pretty gnarly.

Concept Art by Kelton Cram

Based on the celebrated comic book arc, this epic action-adventure takes Wolverine (Hugh Jackman), the most iconic character of the X-Men universe, to modern day Japan. Out of his depth in an unknown world he will face a host of unexpected and deadly opponents in a life-or-death battle that will leave him forever changed. Vulnerable for the first time and pushed to his physical and emotional limits, he confronts not only lethal samurai steel but also his inner struggle against his own immortality.

The Wolverine will be directed by James Mangold (Knight and Day), from a script written by Christopher McQuarrie.. The cast includes: Hugh Jackamn (Logan/Wolverine), Svetlana Khodchenkova (Viper), Hiroyuki Sanada (Shingen), Hal Yamanouchi (Yashida), Tao Okamoto (Mariko), Rila Fukushima (Yukio), Brian Tee (Norubo Mori), and Will Yun Lee (Kenuichio Harada/Silver Samurai). The film clawed into theaters July 26, 2013.

One thing I wondered about her. When she shed her skin in the movie, how does she have another pair of clothes on? Shouldn't she be naked?

I'm a big supporter of The Wolverine. I genuinely kinda loved that movie. Last act was weaker, to be sure, but what super hero movie with drama and characterisation doesn't fall apart when it needs to shoe-horn the obligatory villain plot in?

Anyway. Skin shedding, however, I really have zero explanation for. As dumb as the visuals were for the final act, most of were still pay-offs to established story threads. The skin shedding literally just felt like someone came up with a cool visual and that went into the movie no matter what. Maybe I need to see it again, but I really don't even get what the context was.

Hopefully there's some throwaway line or reason for it re-attached to the movie with the 12 extra minutes. God, that blu-ray really can't get here soon enough.

That part came out of nowhere and felt kind of unnecessary.

She was, she took off her top and presumably the rest of her clothes to shed her skin, then put them back on.

You people are idiots. The shedding was a result of her regeneration. If you actually watched the movie, she gets stabbed and falls from a high drop. You think she's dead but she gets up and heals herself by shedding her skin. Wow wow wow wow.

Marvel Studios owns Madame Hydra. Perhaps the reason FOX made her a mutant was so they could use the Viper character?
