Wolverine Inspired by De Niro

Wolverine Inspired by De Niro

Hugh Jackman took cues from Robert De Niro to prepare for X-MEN ORIGINS: WOLVERINE.

By bsprecher - Apr 27, 2009 01:04 AM EST

In a recent interview with Entertainment Weekly, Hugh Jackman credited Robert De Niro's performance in Cape Fear as inspiration for his work on X-Men Origins: Wolverine. Jackman said:

"I wanted to look like De Niro did when he took off his shirt in Cape Fear and everyone went, 'Whoa.' You realized the guy was a freak."

Jackman defended the role of Logan/Wolverine, feral anti-hero, saying:

"Wolverine's fun and cool, but I wouldn't be down for my fourth time doing it if there wasn't something more interesting to it than just slicing and dicing and smoking a cigar and saying a few cool lines."

X-Men Origins: Wolverine slashes into theaters May 1, 2009!

Haha nice grif! I may not agree with some things in this movie, but one thing is for certain, he's passionate about being a great Wolverine. Got to give him credit for that.

If only he could have taken his cues from Marvel comics....

@007440: It says right in the article that he's talking about De Niro from Cape Fear, the remake. He's talking about the scene where they first show De Niro in prison; he's like, doing pull-ups or something and he's all tat'd up and shredded!

@Juggernaut: It's funny you should say that he should take his cues from Marvel comics considering your avatar is the lame-@$$ movie version of Juggernaut, which bared no resemblance to the comic version...

@stumblin yeah no doubt, i would hate to see this be Hugh's last wolverine movie because he is just so passionate about the character, dunno if the Wolvie fans will ever get another actor this passionate.

Hardly surprising news. Can you name a decent actor that HASN'T used a De Niro performance as inspiration at some point in his career? Didn't think so.

Come on, Jugs, almost everything you post on this site is a relentlessly negative critique of one or more of the movies here, so you gotta expect getting slack from others who don't think like you. To them, you sound like a hater, and most people here HATE haters. Its not an excuse or anything, but it comes with the territory.

And I like the idea of your avatar but most people wont get it since there is nothing telling them thats what it means. To them its just a picture of the movie juggernaut. Can't put people down for not getting your inside joke, know what I mean?

Shadowelfz - 4/27/2009, 2:20 PM
Oh and Bijous I think thats the Marvel Captain Marvel not the DC Shazam one, if you were confused by Brents post. I know I was at first ;)

Ya, I don't get the anger. We're all fans of comix and movies or we wouldn't be here, so why get so angry over anything?

Everyone shut up. Juggernaut is the only one on this forum who's allowed to have opinions. If you disagree with him, you can just take your negativity and get the hell out.

Seriously, Juggs?

When I read this, I was thinking "Taxi Driver" instead of "Cape Fear." Travis Bickle is more of an inspiration for someone like Rorschach, I guess.
ManThing
ManThing - 4/28/2009, 8:46 AM
What is this? Dog out Juggernaut week? Why don't you douchebags lay off?
But it looks like your ready for round mother[frick]ing 2, so let's do this.

2left: Very funny. But why don't you read up the page a little and see where Kevin tried to tell me that I have no right to post!!!!

@ Natalia: Point taken, but on the other hand that's easy for you to say because nobody is attacking you simply because they disagree with what your saying. everybody else gets to say exactly what they want EXCEPT ME! Nice double standard.

@ Shadoweflz: Dude I haven't said anything bad about Transformers, Star Trek, Terminator: Salvation, or Iron Man 2. You know why? because those movies are GOOD. What do you expect? Am i supposed to be happy that they are ruining a movie about something I care about? Come on! Wolverine and Sabertooth BROTHERS?!?! That is SO DAMN STUPID! I'm not just going to bend over and take it like you and your little friends here? Dream on.

Which brings me to little Kevey here

@ Kevin: hey [frick]wit your little characterization of me couldn't be further from the truth. Wanna trade insults on the internet little boy? I can do that.

HEY, GUYS, COOL IT! WE HAVE SOME YOUNG READERS ON OUR SITE. ENOUGH WITH THE VULGAR PERSONAL ATTACKS! -BS

I'm going to say this now, before seeing the movie.

Hugh is a damn good Wolverine, he is very passionate about the character, he's also (from what I can tell) a great guy. Having said all that, let's not put him on a pedestal here people! My main concern for this film isn't Deadpool or the leak, it has always been Hugh's involvement outside of playing his character. X3 is the evidence in my argument. He plays Wolverine really well but it seems that when he starts taking on other "behind the scenes" roles the film tends to suffer. His passion for the character actually gets in the way.

If this is his last Wolverine movie it'll be a shame but it'll open the door for other (possibly better) actors. Doesn't matter what you do or how well you do it, there is ALWAYS people worse than you and ALWAYS people better.

@Howlett: I think Jackman's about as good of an actor as we could hope to find for Wolverine...at least right now. Remember when somebody that it would be a good idea to have Davide Hasseldork play Nick Fury?

BTW...if I could choose an actor from any time period to play Wolverine...it would have been Clint Eastwood, circa 1968! That was one mean mo-fo!

Hugh Jackman is a Huge Jackoff. He needs to tap dance his way back to broadway and leave my f***ing Wolverine alone. They ruined the X-men by completely diluting the story. Now they're ruining the one character that ever made them COOL. The franchise is dead. I don't care how much money the movie makes. They've turned a very serious, epic, and brutal saga into... well, a typical Hollywood crapfest. Odin Save Akira...

@Gates9: I like Jackman in the role, as far as the alternatives out there, but I think the movie would be a lot different if Marvel Studios made it and not Fox.
