It Sounds Like X-MEN: APOCALYPSE Sets The Stage For A "Dark Phoenix Saga" Reboot

X-Men: The Last Stand got a lot wrong, but perhaps its most unforgivable crime was the fact that it completely f***ed up the Dark Phoenix Saga! However, based on comments from Bryan Singer and Simon Kinberg, it sounds like plans are being put in place to do that story justice...

X-Men: Apocalypse is going to introduce a lot of new characters and plot threads to the X-Men Universe, and it sounds like the Dark Phoenix Saga could be among them. One of the most celebrated comic book arcs of all-time, X2: X-Men United set the stage for that story to be adaptated, only for X-Men: The Last Stand to spectacularly drop the ball a few years later.

Still, with Sophie Turner now playing a young Jean Grey, Fox has a chance to make things write, as does scribe Simon Kinberg. "I think everything that hasn't been told from First Class and Days of Future Past is up for grabs going forward, so it would absolutely be a story we could tell in a different way," he told IGN when asked about the possibility of rebooting the story. "We definitely explore how powerful [Jean Grey] is in this movie, and that can be something that is empowering and something that is dangerous." It definitely sounds like they're considering this then!

Bryan Singer meanwhile elaborated on that by mentioning that he would "possibly" be interested in redoing "the full Phoenix story" as he called it, and indicated that we'll get some hints about that in X-Men: Apocalypse as "the idea of that brewing within her" and we "may find a piece of that in this movie." So, if this gets a sequel, we'll finally get a proper version of X-Men Three? Yes!

Jean doesn't have the flarking Phoenix in her already, Singer! God damn it. That's how that stupid X3 got started.

The Phoenix is a separate entity that chooses Jean Grey.

Heck Yeah! Singer's version of X3 was way more epic than what they ended up doing, heres what Singer had planned for X3 before he eventually went on to direct Superman Returns...

“The idea – you open up with Alkali Lake but it’s completely barren and dried up and there are these odd reports of strange phenomena going on around the world accompanied by bright lights in the sky.”

“The idea would be that both the X-Men and the Brotherhood realize that essentially a very god-like force had entered their reality and that it was causing disruptions around the world – mutant prisons being decimated. I had pitched an idea about a fleet of cargo ships getting torn apart in the Atlantic and you found out that they were shuttling mutants as slave labor.”

“So basically you found out was that Phoenix was going round the world taking things into her own hands and that she had basically returned as a god, which they did touch upon in X3. She had viewed herself as above the conflict, that she was here to end things on her terms, she was basically sick of the fighting and she was going to take things into her own hands and she didn’t give a shit what the X-Men or the Brotherhood had to say about it.”

You've got to do Phoenix before you even consider doing "Dark Phoenix". If you ask me, I'd personally prefer a Phoenix story line similar to that of the animated series. You can use the Hellfire Club series as a way of tying into the Dark Phoenix storyline that could be explored much later. Of course anything I just said won't go into play, but it would be pretty nice. However, I STRONGLY and I mean STRONGLY recommend that the get someone else to bring the heat for that storyline. I'm telling you guys, Josh Boone would be the perfect guy to take up this franchise after this film.

Phoenix is what should be done next. If Singer's in the ehhh, possibly I'd do it then I think it should be someone who's strongly encouraged to do it and bring a vision to the franchise like ever before. Glad to know that there will be some building happening here.

Now this is interesting. Brett Ratner gets a lot of heat over X3 but not many people realize Bryan Singer had completed the script before Ratner came aboard. Singer had his Dark Phoenix story in place before he bounced to go do Superman Returns. Ratner was directing Singer's story.

Exciting!!

I honestly believe they will make justice this time, specially after Guardians of the galaxy. And after X3. Bryan and co will do something completely different and after Apoc, probably much much more epic.

Dark Phoenix would need to come two or three movies down the line. After the new Jean and Cyclops are established and we give a damn about them. Not to mention the Shiar and all that.
