Before Charles Xavier and Erik Lensherr took the names Professor X and Magneto, they were two young men discovering their powers for the first time. Before they were archenemies, they were closest of friends, working together, with other Mutants (some familiar, some new), to stop the greatest threat the world has ever known. In the process, a rift between them opened, which began the eternal war between Magneto's Brotherhood and Professor X's X-MEN.

cool concept but done poorly. Erik doesn't look like they remotely attempted to try to make him look like he's there.

Despite everyone having fun at these phrases, you do realize that the general public does not really know what Professor X and Magneto's real names are, right? It's a helpful way for people to understand what this movie is about. They didn't see these actors portray those characters in the earlier movies so if they just see a trailer, they might not get that it's their origin stories. It's a good way to make the connection.

Plus, I don't think it's nearly as corny as people seem to paint it as. People just know them as grand superheros and supervillains, but at one point in their lives they were just regular people with undeveloped mutations. That sentence is saying just that.
