James McAvoy Talks About His Predecessor Patrick Stewart!

The actor set to play Charles Xavier in the X-Men: First Class prequel has talked about his predecessor Patrick Stewart, as well as giving some more detail on the frustation of having telepathic powers.

MTV News recently spoke to James McAvoy about taking over the role of Charles Xavier from Sir Patrick Stewart.

On having met Patrick Stewart before:

"Once I was very lucky to receive an award and he handed it to me... Which was nice because not only am I playing the young version of him in 'X-Men,' I’m just a fan of his from 'Star Trek' and David Lynch’s 'Dune' ... and lots of things."

On his impressions of Stewart (see the video above!):

"I love doing Patrick Stewart... It’s all I can do not to do an impression of him while I’m making the movie as well."

On whether Stewart's performance influenced his own portrayal:

"It did inform what I’m doing, in the way that we’re doing a lot of the opposite. So that by the time the movie ends or a sequel might end or whatever, you find that he has come toward who he is in those other movies but he’s got to be a very different person. He’s definitely on the path to becoming Chuck Xavier."

On whether his mutant powers were fun to play in comparison to those of his fellow co-stars:

“No, unfortunately. They would be in real life, but as an actor, performing them, it’s not cool.

Everybody else is hanging off wires, back flipping off the walls and stuff, and I’m going [demonstrates his "power," with his right hand at his temple, and a serious expression staring off into distance]... I’m so satisfied right now.. I’m so fulfilled..."

'Chuck' Xavier?! what is he, peppermint patty talking about Charlie Brown? lol

Is he going to be bald in this movie? doesn't appear that he will, and that would be really irritating to see xavier with hair. Patrick Stewart was just born to be Xavier, looks like him, voice is perfect match. This guy doesn't give me that 'good casting choice' vibe. He just doesn't embody the charles xavier character to me. Hope that I'm wrong on this one, but since I don't have high hopes for this movie, I doubt it.

@Guason - most definitely. would love to see them do something with her!

@rolanddeschain - Seconded. I keep trying to get that Xavier vibe from him through interviews and it's just not there. Patrick Stewart was the "People's Pick" for Xavier when the first movies were still just a rumor. McAvoy...not so much.

"you know what this site is like you can't hate anything you've got to like everything."

Well said. Finally someone else around here gets it.

But really it gets even worse than that. You have to like whatever certain condescending, course, mouthy people like. Not just everything.

If you don't then your just a whinging fanboy crybaby, a hypocrite, and blah blah blah

There is no maneuverability on that beast; therefore the Enterprise would have the upper hand.

@ Intruder

Dude -- The Enterprise has 3 dimensional aim as far as its armaments too AND on top of that it can fire a sustained phaser blast. Where in Star Wars have you ever seen a sustained beam of energy come from any ship (aside from the Death Star)?

@ Reverend

The only thing Star Trek has better than Star Wars is Tractor Beams... (and they had Zoe in the remake, but that doesnt count)...
