Rose Byrne On Moira MacTaggert's CIA Connections In X-Men: First Class

Byrne briefly speaks to MTV about playing a slightly different version of the Moira Mactaggert from the comics..

One element(among many!) of Mathew Vaughn's X prequel that has caused a bit of fan backlash is this movie's incarnation of Moira MacTaggert. A Dr working for mutant rights in the comics, here she will be a CIA liaison to Xavier and Magneto's young team..

"She works for the CIA in this prequel and gets involved in the whole mutant community as it were,

"I'm on [the mutants'] side, so that's the main thing. "She kind of joins forces with [Charles Xavier and Erik Lehnsherr] to use mutants for good rather than evil."

"She really believes in them being able to coexist with humans,"

Does Byrne display a hint of a Scottish accent when she says "Mutant community"? Maybe it's my imagination. In the comics, MacTaggert is Scottish and an ex lover of Charles Xavier and Sean Cassidy(Banshee). In the movie Banshee is said to be her assistant. But the romantic connection to Xavier is still a strong possibility.

I have a feeling the CIA are going to ask Xavier's crew to help them out with the Cuban Missile crisis. I can't remember correctly but wasn't there a CIA agent that xavier knew, who use to asks xavier help with problems that were out of the CIA's hand. I think it was in the First Class comics.

Darkmatter@ Hollywood writing rule number one: Characters grow, develop and change over the course of a film as they attempt and then succeed in overcoming various obstacles and acheiving goals.

We know what Xavier is like now - so in this film we see what it is that makes him become that man we know. Usually moving from one opposing position to another. If he is a 'saint' now they are gonna show him being a bit of a 'sinner'.

Lucky for him it involves banging every hottie he meets...

or the fact that she hasnt aged in any of the movies, considering she is x2 and x3 and she looks actually older in the prequel, oh wait it wasnt really Moria in the other movies, or wait she is actually moria sister or mother, stupid movie

I seriously don't get it people almost sound surprised by the fact that the movies diverge from the comics a lot. Wasn't pretty clear in the first 2 movies yet they didn't get as much hate. And it really doesn't matter if all of us on this site boycott this movie, were not the only ones that are going to watch this. They wouldn't be making these movie if they weren't making money, so if its hated by us fan boys then who's watching it and wheres the money coming from?

what was the "fan backlash" about again?

I mean as a far as I know in the comics the U.S., Brittish, and Scottish governments are aware of the existence and purpose of the research facility on Muir island. McTaggart's activites are not secret like the X-Men are, so it's really not much a of a stretch.

Still the comic version is definitely cooler than just being a pro mutant CIA agent, but that's minor.

What happened to the MacTaggert cameo at the end of X-men 3? Now are they just saying that both x3 and origins aren't continuity? That would be fine with me

Its FOX... deal with it. Everyone is still going to see this movie... even if its just to throw more hate on it... I hope its really-really good, totally screws up the continuity of the other films, and they have no choice but to use it as a reboot for other X-Men films. That way all of the new films can be in this continuity, which will allow them to bring in the more popular/traditional characters and let Vaughn stick with what he created.

I still want to see some futuristic X-Men stories (time travel) with Cable, Bishop, Forge, and Hope Summers. Lets make it happen.
