NO TIME TO DIE Stars Lashana Lynch & Ana de Armas Discuss Bringing BOND Into The #MeToo Age

With a few possible exceptions (Eva Green's Vesper Lynd, for example), James Bond movies have never been particularly interested in giving their "Bond Girls" much to do beyond being eye candy, but that's set to change with the upcoming 25th entry in the long-running franchise.

No Time To Die will be the first entry in the series to land in a #MeToo and Time's Up world, and, with that in mind, Fleabag creator Phoebe Waller-Bridge was hired to bring a fresh female perspective to the film’s script - something which seems to have benefited the new characters played by Lashana Lynch and Ana de Armas.

"I very literally squealed when I first heard her name," says Lynch, who played Maria Rambeau in Captain Marvel. "I thought, 'Oh my gosh, British girl just like me. She's going to know how to actually take care of women onscreen.' "

Director Carey Fukunaga and producer Barbara Broccoli were clearly aware of the need to modernize the franchise in this regard, and reportedly worked with both Lynch and de Armas to create a "new type of female Bond character."

We still don't know a whole lot about Paloma (de Armas) and Nomi (Lynch), but the latter is rumored to have inherited the 007 mantle from Bond when the story kicks off. We don't get confirmation of that here, but it definitely sounds like the mysterious secret agent is going to have a very prominent role.

"It's pretty obvious that there is an evolution in the fact that Lashana is one of the main characters in the film and wears the pants — literally. I wear the gown. She wears the pants," says de Armas.

I'm fine with all this, I hope they give Craig's Bond the swan song he deserves, I think he's been a fantastic 007. But where is the love for Naomi Harris' Moneypenny? She's been in all of these movies and is part sexual intrigue and part secret agent. We'll see how the new characters stack up, I love Moneypenny and sometimes feel she's forgotten about.

@SpideyPuffsMJ -

I definitely enjoyed Naomie Harris's portrayal of Moneypenny, and hope we get to see more of here. She played such an important part in the scene above

@batman001 - You're right! That's okay though, no one remembers Quantum of Solace anyway.

@SpideyPuffsMJ - This will be really fascinating, because women have had traditional roles to play in Bond films, regarding his love life. They constantly change. Léa Seydoux's character is supposed to be killed off. And Ana de Armas' character is supposed to eventually sleep with James Bond. The idea being, is that he's never supposed to permanently settle down, and start a family.

If they want Bond to settle down, and/or give a woman more of the spotlight, MoneyPenny should've been the female character that they focused on.

Also I have a ton of faith in Cary Fukunaga. I was pissed when he didn't get to do the IT movies, they probably would've been so much better, my God, that sequel. Missed opportunity.

I'm starting to feel like women are going to be chastised if they're still attracted to Bond during these times.

Hey folks, a lot of amazing directors have worked with terrible scripts at some point in their career. It’s okay. No need to cry. Just sit back and wait for the next chapter in Ghostbusters Oceans Men in Black Terminator and whatever major franchise we need to sprinkle a dash of feminism in because screw it that’s the only way how you can make things modern and progessive.
