After revealing the film's official logo at CinemaCon earlier this year, Warner Bros. and Roadshow Entertainment have officially started production on Furiosa, their long-awaited Mad Max: Fury Road prequel/spinoff from Academy Award-winning director George Miller.
Anya Taylor-Joy (The Queen's Gambit; The New Mutants) headlines the cast, starring as a younger take on Imperator Furiosa, inheriting the role from Academy Award-winner Charlize Theron; while Chris Hemsworth (Thor: Love and Thunder; Avengers: Endgame) is set to play the film's lead villain.
While it was rumored that he might have been cast as a young Immortan Joe, it's now believed he will actually play an original character created exclusively for this film.
The studios should make a more formal announcement in the coming days, and we will likely learn a lot more about the supporting cast, which has been shrouded in mystery thus far. Yahya Abdul-Mateen II (Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom; Candyman) was previously attached to a leading role but had to drop out due to scheduling conflicts.
Filming will take place in New South Wales, and the production is expected to be Australia's largest-ever, reportedly set to infuse at least $350 million AUD into the local economy and create approximately 850 jobs for locals.
Furiosa opens in theaters on May 24, 2024.
