Mark Millar and Nacho Vigalondo have been hard at work on getting a screenplay together for a big screen adaptation of
Supercrooks (the first issue of the comic book series went on sale today) and the director has now spoken to
Comic Book Resources about his plans for the film.
"Heist films are one of my favorite genres because they are based equally in character chemistry and plot complexity," he said when asked what it is that most appeals to him about the series.
"I love this challenging story where the heist is followed in almost real time, inside a contained space, but twists and surprises keep coming all the time."
The comic book series is pencilled by Millar's collaborator on
Superior, Lenil Yu. As for whether the artists vision matches up with his own, Vigalondo revealed that he's a big fan of the Filipino artist and that the look he has created for this universe will play a big role in the look of the upcoming film.
"One of the key things in "Supercrooks" is how the characters are described through their costumes. Their costumes have to feel like superpower costumes, but in a believable way, the same way a fireman or soldier costume feels handy and logical. Is a delicate thing, and Leinil is doing it wonderfully. Personally, I think his Praetorian design is perfect."
"We both respect the nature of comic and movie languages enough to enjoy the differences, rather than pushing the similarities," he said when talk turned to working with Millar on the script for
Supercrooks.
"Writing panels demands a different approach than writing sequences in a movie. In simpler terms, all the dialogue punchlines in the screenplay and comic book are different, because the nature and rhythm of every situation follows different narrative rules." As for when production will begin on the latest Millarworld creation (Millar has already revealed that it may be as soon as 2014) he said,
" At this moment, I'm about to start the shooting of "Windows," my third film, and my first English one. I'll jump quickly into "Supercrooks." I'm ready to forget about holidays for the next three years. And I love it!"
