THE RAID: Gareth Evans Teaming With Michael Bay And Patrick Hughes To Reboot The Action Franchise

The Raid remains one of the best action films ever made, but a reboot has started to take shape as Netflix enlists Patrick Hughes (The Expendables 3) and Michael Bay (Transformers) to develop the movie.

Gareth Evans' The Raid is rightly considered an action movie classic, and Deadline is now reporting that Netflix is set to reimagine the franchise with some big names attached behind the scenes. Evans will return to executive produce a fresh take that's tapped Patrick Hughes (The Expendables 3The Hitman's Wife's Bodyguard) to direct and Michael Bay to produce.

Yes, that Michael Bay.

It's an odd fit, but Bay will only produce as Hughes is co-writing the script with James Beaufort. Attempts to reboot The Raid have been ongoing for years, since a third instalment of the original series simply never came to fruition (and probably won't now this reboot is moving forward).

According to the trade, this version of The Raid is going to be set in Philadelphia's drug-infested "Badlands," where an elite undercover DEA task force climbs a ladder of cartel informants to catch an elusive kingpin.

"We’re incredibly excited about Patrick’s unique vision for this film," the producers said today. "It’s a distinctly original take on the material, which promises to pay great respect to the original film while also bringing a fresh approach and perspective that will set its own course in the action genre."

After the last attempted reboot fell apart, Bay and Hughes were connected and quickly hit it off. Evans appears to be fully on board with the direction they hope to take the franchise in, and Netflix ultimately managed to land what could be another popular franchise for the streamer. It's still too early to talk about the cast and release date, but it should be well worth keeping an eye on this take on The Raid.

No thanks. I'll just watch the original The Raid movie

@kingjoeg - Yeah, both Raid movies were great. Why reboot it? Just make a 3rd one.

Either way, I'm fairly certain that rebooting it and bringing in Michael Bay is NOT the way to go lol.

Why would you do this? Why would you reboot it? Why would you do this with Michael Bay?

Just why?

This seems super unnecessary, can't Gareth just get started on Raid 3 instead please?

I could see this working as like effectively a third movie that just ignores the previous films (I mean come on no one is watching this for the story), goes back to the trapped in a building set up of the original, and makes it english. Ikon Uwais better still be in it though.

Doesn't need to be reboot really. The premise is so thin it could be inserted in any movie.

But Michael Bay? Hell yeah. The action of Gareth Evans combined with the crazy set pieces of Bay could be amazing to watch

@bkmeijer - my brother was an extra in one of the Transformers films for a medieval battle scene and said Bay was on a lot of coke. Doesn’t surprise me

@Cap1 - doesn't surprise me either. It's either that, or he really is crazy enough to come up with all that ridicilous shit and make it work.
Cap1
Cap1 - 1/11/2022, 7:31 AM
@bkmeijer - I don’t think he makes it work personally, he’s a pretty awful filmmaker, but he’s ambitious, i’ll give him that
bkmeijer2
bkmeijer2 - 1/11/2022, 7:39 AM
@Cap1 - what I more is that he makes it work in a sense that we remember it.

Yeah it is awful, but I can pretty much recall every action piece that man did in his movies. It's bad, but it sticks.

This makes no sense to me. The original has virtually no dialogue, you could follow the plot without understanding a lick. Just give us the third film Evans ffs

GhostDog - 1/11/2022, 7:38 AM
@Cap1 - literally makes no sense too in that the original is also special because of Pencak Silat. As an almost unknown Southeast martial art, the movie put it on the map. Something else that made The Raid, “THE RAID.”

Why not make a third movie? Evans had plans for a third movie, something about the third would start 25 minutes before the second one ended.

It’s a movie about bad ass cops taking down a dangerous drug cartel in a war zone. They aren’t actually rebooting, they bought Edwards name because Bay’s name isn’t enough to draw viewership anymore.

Remember they did do an actual reboot years ago… it was called Dredd

According to the trade, this version of The Raid is going to be set in Philadelphia's drug-infested "Badlands."

Literally no one that likes The Raid films wants to see some 'Murican-ized version. We don't want ultra-saturated technicolor and explosions every five minutes. We want visible Pencak Silat action in an Indonesian setting

Watch the drug cartel be made up of Black and Hispanic people because Hollywood can't help themselves.

The Raid has a pretty standard plot for an action movie. Hell, Dredd started filming more than one year before The Raid was released. Why make a remake? Is the brand really that valuable? Your average Joe will have zero clue about the original movie, and fans will be pissed off about having a remake in the first place. Who is this for?

so its just Dredd then but with lense flare, explosions and poorly racial stereotype characters ?

think i will stick with the original Raid or rewatching Dredd.

The audience: "Give us The Raid 3!"

The boardroom: "Hmmm, any ideas for how can we give them the polar opposite of that? Something that will destroy all hype for the continuation of this franchise on every possible level."

Reboots are the scourge of Hollywood. They just scream lazy cash grabs. I don't think there's been a single remake that has justified it's existence over the original. But this is one movie that definitely does not need a reboot.
