Tom Cruise & THE REVENANT Director Alejandro G. Iñárritu To Team For Top Secret Film At Warner Bros.

Big news from the Warner Bros. lot tonight as it's being reported that Mission: Impossible superstar Tom Cruise is in early talks to headline Oscar-winner Alejandro G. Iñárritu's next film.

A little over a month since Tom Cruise signed his new deal with Warner Bros. to develop and produce original and franchise theatrical films over the next several years, it sounds like his first film under the deal will be one to remember and should have film fans extremely excited.

Deadline is reporting that Warner Bros. and Legendary Entertainment are in advanced negotiations to acquire an untitled new film from 4x Academy Award-winning director Alejandro G. Iñárritu, that would star Cruise in the lead role.

Iñárritu co-wrote the screenplay last year with Sabina Berman, and his Oscar-winning Birdman scribes Alexander Dinelaris and Nicolas Giacobone. He'll also serve as a producer alongside Cruise, Warner Bros., and Legendary.

Plot details are being kept under heavy lock and key, and, by all accounts, the film is being treated as top secret. As per the report, Iñárritu had been taking meetings with a select few A-list actors over the past several weeks, with Cruise being one of the first, and it looks like things moved fairly quickly as the Top Gun: Maverick star was onboard pretty much as soon as their conversation ended.

This will be Iñárritu's first studio film since 2015's The Revenant, a film which earned him his second consecutive Academy Award for Best Director. His more prominent credits also include Bardo: False Chronicle of a Handful of TruthsBirdman or (The Unexpected Virtue of Ignorance), BiutifulBabel, and 21 Grams

At the moment, Cruise is hard at work filming the highly anticipated eighth chapter in his blockbuster Mission: Impossible franchise. However, his upcoming slate, which now includes the untitled Iñárritu film, is getting exceedingly interesting.

As for what's been confirmed, the 4x Academy Award-nominated megastar, currently has his SpaceX film set up at Universal with Doug Liman, which is tentatively scheduled to start shooting next year, although that's likely subject to change with his new projects. It was also recently reported that Cruise is in talks for a pivotal role in Quentin Tarantino's final film The Movie Critic, which may go to Warner Bros. or Sony, and there have been active negotiations with WB about an Edge of Tomorrow sequel as well.

In a Variety report earlier this week, we learned that Cruise may be looking to pivot from action somewhat and seek out directors like Iñárritu and Paul Thomas Anderson, amongst others, and it seems as though we're already seeing that in action with this latest news.

I know it won't ever happen, but always wanted Tom Cruise in A comic book related movie.

Back in the day when it was rumored he would be Tony Stark/Iron Man I thought that would cool to have him as a superhero becasue he was so good in action movies.

@IAmAHoot - You're right, I forgot about 'Edge of Tommorow' is a movie verison of the graphic novel,'All you need is Kill'.

I meant maybe one of the Big Two character from Dc or Marvel.

@Nomis929 - imo he could still play Hal Jordan as a mentor for a young John Stewart

If this is true… Cruise might end up in the Oscar race again next year.

I'd take any of his serious movies over any of the MI movies, except maybe 2 ^_^ he needs to stop playing action star, also after he films his space movie, there's nothing else that can top it

Cruise and McQuarrie should reboot GI Joe for Paramount with Cruise playing Hawk and assembling the GI Joe team in the 80s.

I read the news yesterday, hopefully they do something exciting.

Maybe he'll take on a bear. :P

They did it. Mike and Amy wined and dined Tom Cruise into a contract.

I wonder if this Inarritu flick means they didn't manage to get The Critic deal, though.

Also James Gunn should totally convince him to do Hal Jordan in Lanterns. Come on, make this the best timeline.

@ObserverIO - He's way too old, I thought we all agreed on Glen Powell for Hal?
ObserverIO
ObserverIO - 2/23/2024, 12:11 PM
@soberchimera - He's not too old for an older Hal. But Glen Powell is way too young for an older Hal. So it HAS to be Tom Cruise by that logic.

You're welcome movie fans!
soberchimera
soberchimera - 2/23/2024, 12:14 PM
@ObserverIO - Nobody wants an older Hal, they want a Hal in his prime because he's the character that's sold the most comics. Geoff Johns, Robert Venditti, and now Jeremy Adams have proven this.

@soberchimera - That guy looks like the wish.com Hal Jordan.

"Mom, can we get Hal Jordan?"
"We have Hal Jordan at home"
*Hal Jordan at home* Glen Powell
ObserverIO
ObserverIO - 2/23/2024, 12:29 PM
@soberchimera - That's exactly what they said to Frank Miller about Batman in 1986.

Besides, how many Green Lanterns does Earth need? Hal should be the older, more seasoned GL with years of experience and Jon Stewart should be his younger protege, that he is training up to take over his mantle.
soberchimera
soberchimera - 2/23/2024, 12:34 PM
@ObserverIO - Hal and John are roughly the same age in the comics and Earth needs more than 1 GL because of the overabundance of superhumans there.
ObserverIO
ObserverIO - 2/23/2024, 12:46 PM
@soberchimera - There has to be way more superhumans in other galaxies. Metahumans are a minority on Earth whereas other species in other galaxies are fully evolved. Is that seriously the excuse they use in the comics? Earth exceptionalism? That's lame.
ObserverIO
ObserverIO - 2/23/2024, 12:46 PM
@soberchimera -But okay lets say we have a regular aged Hal. I'd still want Cruise over Glen Powell. Just because Powell was born later doesn't make him younger. What the hell kind of science do you call that? Mathematics?!

Observe:

Glen Powell, 2024.
Old As [frick].

Tom Cruise, 2024.
Young and vital.
soberchimera
soberchimera - 2/23/2024, 12:51 PM
@ObserverIO - Yes, in the DC universe, Earth has far more superhuman and cataclysmic activity than most other planets in the universe, the Guardians have remarked on this several times in the comics. More threats = more Lanterns.
ObserverIO
ObserverIO - 2/23/2024, 12:59 PM
@soberchimera - It's our fault you know. Because we're reading them. If we were reading comics based on other planets all the time, then they would be the ones to have all the big, crazy adventures.

The more comics we read based on Earth, the more dangerous Earth seems when compared to the rest of the universe.

Far Sector started to even the balance a little, but that's not even charted space.
